Dimensions: 16" x 22"
Class: 3a

Magnitude : 8.8
Notes:
This planetary is 4 light years in diameter. The central star is an O type dwarf with a
surface temperature of 35,000o K.
It was the first planetary studied with a spectroscope (1864, William Huggins).
Observatory photos show a complex double knot form, almost like a German pretzel.
It formed about 1,000 years ago when a star two or three times the mass of the Sun
ejected its outer layers. Stellar winds have since sculpted it into the shape we now see.
Observations:
C8 at 206x. Stellar at low power, the view improves a lot with high power. An
11.5m star lies 5 min NNW, and the central star (11m) is sometimes visible with high
powers. It has a strong bluish-green tint. At the higher powers, it looks tapered on the
ends (N-S axis)— this tapering gives rise to its common name of "The Cat Eye Nebula".
It is only 11 min WNW of the North Ecliptic Pole.
Webb saw it with a 3" refractor.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 79 miles (127 km).
