Zone 264 Deep Sky Objects Easy NGC 5694 Rating: 5 E Other Names: H II 196 Astronomical League Program: Caldwell Club, Herschel 400 Club Position: 1440-2632 Type: Gc Dimensions: 2' Class: 7 Magnitude: 11.0 Notes: Discovered by William Herschel in May, 1784, it has the fastest orbital velocity of any globular cluster in our galaxy (80 km/sec faster than the Galaxy's escape velocity). It is not yet known what could have accelerated this globular to more than escape velocity, but recent discoveries have shown that in the last 5 billion years, the Milky Way had a collision with a faint dwarf galaxy. Perhaps this was the catalyst? NGC 5694 lies on the opposite side of the Galaxy from us, and 85,000 light years from the Milky Way’s center. It was not recognized as a globular until 1932 (C. Lampland and C. Tombaugh). The brightest stars are 15.5m and the horizontal branch is 18.5m. Observations: C8 at 104x. Unresolved, small and bright.
