Astronomical League Program: Caldwell Club, Herschel 400 Club
Position: 1440-2632
Type: Gc
Dimensions: 2'
Class: 7
Magnitude: 11.0
Notes:
Discovered by William Herschel in May, 1784, it has the fastest orbital velocity of
any globular cluster in our galaxy (80 km/sec faster than the Galaxy's escape velocity). It
is not yet known what could have accelerated this globular to more than escape velocity,
but recent discoveries have shown that in the last 5 billion years, the Milky Way had a
collision with a faint dwarf galaxy. Perhaps this was the catalyst?
NGC 5694 lies on the opposite side of the Galaxy from us, and 85,000 light years
from the Milky Way’s center.
It was not recognized as a globular until 1932 (C. Lampland and C. Tombaugh).
The brightest stars are 15.5m and the horizontal branch is 18.5m.
Observations:
C8 at 104x. Unresolved, small and bright. High powers don't help, but the bright
core really seems to punch out. Bright, rich field.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 18,700 miles.
