IC 1257
Other Names: Cederblad 144; Lund 751
Rating: 5 D
Position: 1727-0702
Type: Gc
Magnitude: 12.0
Dimensions: 1'
Notes:
This may actually be a very distant globular cluster. It was first reported by Spitaler
in 1890 (who found it with a 27" scope in Vienna). Shapley listed it as an open cluster in
his 1930 monograph, but Collinder did not include it in his 1931 monograph (Trumpler
did not list it either). Hogg listed it as an open cluster in 1958, as did Lynga in 1987.
Cederblad listed it as a nebula (!) in 1946.
The brightest stars are about 19m. It is 23 light years in diameter.
IC 1257 is a faint, compact star cluster that was discovered more than a century ago
by Spitaler (1890, AN, 125, 282). It lies behind a rather heavy (but uniform) sheet of
foreground reddening. Since its discovery, IC 1257 has always been listed as an open
cluster, although no photometric study of it has ever been published. The colormagnitude diagram shows an M13-like morphology, with an extremely blue horizontal
branch and a moderately steep red-giant branch. Using the CMD to estimate its
reddening, metallicity, and distance, we find an apparent distance modulus (m-M)v =
19.2, a foreground reddening E(B-V) = 0.75, and a metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.7. The cluster
is about 24 kpc from the Sun and 16 kpc beyond the Galactic center. Unlike the great
majority of non-NGC globular clusters that have been found over the past few decades,
IC 1257 is therefore unusual in being neither in the Galactic bulge nor the outermost halo,
but rather in the mid-halo region.

unresolved (Steve Coe: "oatmeal"), and it is best to get 47 Oph (16 min W; at 4.6m, 5.1
