It was discovered in 1783 by William Herschel. (Otto Struve found C in 1851.)
AB 1825: 85.3 @ 108. 77 measurements.
Aa (12.20m) 1850: 128.3 @ 197. 6 measurements.
Ab (12.50m) 1850: 99.4 @ 279. 6 measurements.
W. Herschel found B to be double. 1851: 3.0 @ 160. Over 100 measurements. The
BC orbit takes 248 years (a = 6.94", retrograde motion) and they orbit A in 8,000 years.
A is 90% as big as the Sun and 75% of its mass; B is a white dwarf, only 17,000 miles in
diameter and half the Sun's mass. C is 20% of the Sun's mass and 43% of its diameter.
The AB orbit takes 252.1 years (Heintz, 1974). The white dwarf (B) is so dense that
one cubic inch of it would weigh 2 tons on earth. Its surface gravity is 37,000 times that
of earth’s! The primary is an infra-red source.
All three stars have proper motion of about 4.1 @ 215 and all three have the same
radial velocity.
Observations:
C8 at 83x. Some observers report B, W and V. Webb saw them as Y! and B. The
name comes from the fact that to the Arabs, this tar and Eta, Zeta, Rho and Sigma were
called "the ostrich nest".
Scale model (in which the Sun is the size of a baseball):
Diameter: A = 2.70 inches; B = 0.10 inches.
Separation: AB = 2.10 miles; BC = 1,196 feet; Aa = 1.98 miles; Ab = 5.37 miles.

The companion star is probably a Delta Scuti variable, a class of short-period
variables (usually 0.5 to 8 hours) with miniscule amplitudes (usually 0.01 to 0.40
magnitude). They are also known as dwarf Cepheids and AI Velorum stars, and are quite
common.
Both stars are spectroscopic binaries.
