Its surface temperature is 3,200o K, and it seems to have a massive companion with about 1.5 times the mass of Jupiter. Its proper motion is a whopping 10.29" per year @ 356. (This translates to 1o of displacement per 351 years.) Its actual velocity works out to 103 miles per second. Proper motion was discovered in 1718 by Edmund Halley (of the comet fame). Several other high proper motion stars are known, such as UV Cet, Lalande 21185 (UMa), Wolf 359 (Leo), Ross 614 (Mon), Piazzi’s Flying Star (61 Cyg), Groombridge 1830 (UMa), Kapteyn’s Star (Pic), and Van Biesbroeck’s Star (Aql). If one scans a list of the 33 highest proper motion stars known, one finds that the overwhelming majority of them are dwarfs of spectral classes K and M, with a light sprinkling of G’s. Since high proper motion stars imply close proximity to the Sun, it thus makes sense that most of these "movers and shakers" are dwarfs since by default dwarfs become undetectable at greater distances and most of the stars we see in the sky are brighter and farther stars. In other words, the survey of high proper motion stars shows us what the galactic "local neighborhood" really looks like, and it is not what our eyes at first suggest to us. We look into the sky with our telescopes and think we must live in a very congested suburb, but the truth is our region of the Galaxy is fairly sparsely populated with mostly dwarfs. - 25 - Zone 195 In fact, probably 90% of all stars in the Universe are dwarfs like these. As it turns out, we live in a very typical, very hum-drum neighborhood! Observations: C8 at 104x. Use the four-star 8m group to the N as a guide. (This group contains the variable V566 Oph.)
