This system was discovered by William Herschel in 1781.
1823: 23.3 @ 66. Over 100 measurements. Both stars are spectroscopic binaries.
The Aa-Bb pair is at least 1,000 AU apart. In addition, the Aa pair is an occultation

similar radial velocity.
Burnham found a small companion to B in 1888, 12.2m , at 1.5 @ 77 (1995).

Notes:
This galaxy displays subtle and tightly wound blue spiral arms with a yellowish core.
Astronomers that have recently observed this galaxy note that the stars in the disk are
orbiting the galaxy at a break-neck speed of 360km/s. If this number seems large to youbear in mind you are orbiting the center of the Milky Way at 220 km/s.
It is 105,000 light years in diameter.
Observations:

is a big help here. The axis seems to run NNE-SSW. A 9m star lies 15 min E, a 10m one
lies 5 min S, and an 11m one 2 min SE.

Notes:
NGC 660 is described as being a "polar ring" galaxy. These galaxies are believed to
have formed from the collision of two galaxies in the past. In the case of NGC 660 it
would appear that our perspective is inclined from the axis of the disk so that the
foreground portion of the ring does not cross the plane in the middle- but instead towards
one side. The central region of this galaxy is considered a "starburst" due to the extreme
amount of luminous star formation.
