79 stars have been counted as members, and it lies 24,500 light years from the
galactic center and just below its plane.
Observations:

Other Names: Melotte 226; Collinder 409, M71
Astronomical Leage Program: Messier Club
Rating: 2 E
Position: 1954+1847
Type: Gc
Magnitude: 9.0
Dimensions: 6'
Notes:
It was discovered by J. Koehler in 1775, and cataloged by Messier on October 4, 1780
based on observations by Mechain on June 28 of that year.
It is 30 light years in diameter. The
brightest stars are 12.1m and the
horizontal branch is 14.4m. (This
implies an age of only 9 to 10 billion
years.)
Classification as a globular is
uncertain, because unlike most
globulars, it is very metal-rich and has
no RR-Lyrae variables. But recent
photometric studies have found a
short "horizontal branch" as noted
above.
Observations:
C8 at 206x. Faint and semiresolved.
C11 at 115x. Large and semiresolved, but faint. A 10m Y star is
due N. The SW quadrant looks a little
richer than the rest of it.
C11 at 98x. Semi-resolved, spread
out and with a core that is not very
dense. It resembles a rich open
cluster.
