Notes:
This star has strong traces of manganese in its spectrum, and shows evidence of an
expanding shell. It is also an infra-red source.
It is a member of the Pleiades Group.
From James Kaler's Star Notes:
Elnath has positional significance, as it is in the Milky Way only three degrees to the
west of the anticenter of the Galaxy, the point directly opposite the Galactic Center in
Sagittarius. In this broad direction lie vast dark cold clouds of interstellar gas and dust in
which stars are being born. Physically, Elnath is a hot (13,600 Kelvin) class B giant star.
The radius derived from temperature and luminosity, 4.6 times that of the Sun, agrees
well that found from the original measurement of angular diameter, though not with a
more recent measure, which makes the star 35 percent larger, showing the difficulty of
such observations.
Like so many stars of its class, Elnath is "chemically peculiar" and appears to be a
"mercury-manganese" star, the manganese abundance 25 times normal, the calcium and
magnesium abundance reduced and only an eighth solar. These peculiarities are caused
by the combined action of gravity and radiation, which make the atoms of some elements
drift downward and out of sight and others rise. Elnath has a mass of around 4.5 times
that of the Sun. It is beginning to die, and if it has not already completely shut down the
fusion of hydrogen in its core, it will before too long. Within only a couple million years,
it will expand to become a cooler orange giant star.

Rating: 1 E
Other Names: Melotte 38; Collinder 75; Raab 28, M37
Astronomical Leage Program: Messier Club, Urban Deep Sky Club
Position: 0552+3233
Type: Oc
Dimensions: 23'
Class: I 2r
Cluster population: 170
Magnitude: 5.6
Notes:
It was discovered by Messier on September 2, 1764. He described it as a "cluster of
small stars.... the stars are very small, very crowded and containing nebulosity."
It is 25 light years in diameter and 347 million years old. Up to 1,800 stars have been
counted as members of this cluster. There are a dozen red giants in this cluster, one of
which dominates the center.
It lies 32,000 light years from the galactic center and 230 light years above the
galactic plane.
Observations:
C8 at 65x. Dense, and a moving sight! Note the 9m yO star at the center and the
arrowhead shape. Smythe called it "a magnificent object." Webb said "the whole field
being strewed, as it were, with sparkling gold-dust; and the group is resolvable ito about
500 stars from 10m to 14m, besides the outliers. Even in smaller instruments, extremely
beautiful, one of the finest of its class." Steve Coe calls it "a winter version of M11."
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
It would be 9,910 miles in diameter, with its stars 895 miles apart.
Distance (LY): 4,600
Luminosity (suns): 9,500
