THE MANLEY MESSENGER October 2015 Volume 5, Issue 2 What Will We Be Learning in October? Reading: During October, we will be engaged in a character study. Students will understand the difference between physical traits and character traits. They will use dialogue and character thoughts and actions to understand who the character is on the inside. Students will look for a change in a character. Writing: After we publish our personal narratives, students will begin our personal essay unit. They will write essays based on their own lives. We will begin by thinking about people and things that are important in our lives. Once students determine their thesis statement, they will support it with reasons, or evidence. Math: In our next units, students will be reviewing addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. They will be building on their knowledge from previous grades to add and subtract four-digit numbers. We will also be using bar models to help us solve addition and subtraction story problems. During each math unit, we will be “putting on our thinking cap” to build on our problem solving skills and strategies. Social Studies: In our first unit, students will be introduced to the regions of New Jersey. Students will learn about New Jersey’s natural regions and physical characteristics, as well as the state’s natural resources. They will learn about the state symbols, counties, and major cities of New Jersey. Science: We will continue our first unit on Earth Movements. During the remainder of this unit, students will investigate plates and what happens when they collide. They will learn about the causes and effects of volcanoes and earthquakes.. We spent the first few weeks of school learning the procedures and expectations for the classroom. The students thought about their hopes and dreams for third grade and we created class rules to help us achieve our goals. In reading, we set the expectations for reading workshop. We also learned how to post-it our thinking as we read by noting when we make connections, make predications, have a question, and have a strong feeling or reaction. We also practiced choosing a “just right” book and the elements of a good retelling. We worked on personal narratives during writing workshop in September. We learned the difference between a watermelon story and a seed story and chose 1 seed story to write about. We stretched out our small moment by adding details and showing, not telling, our emotions. During math, we built numbers into the thousands using base-ten blocks. We counted by ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. We were even able to compare and order four digit numbers! In science, we began our study of Earth’s movements by using a hard-boiled egg to investigate the layers of the Earth. We learned about the features of the Earth’s crust and the clues that rocks provide to scientists to learn more about Earth. manleyc@madisonpublicschools.org https://twitter.com/MrsManleysClass
