Proposed Change- We have submitted, after approval by our Curriculum Committee,
two Associate Degrees. The California State Chancellor's Office has approved these
degrees effective Fall 2012:
1 ) Associate f Science Degree in Advanced Engine Performa ce
Description and need for the change: The courses listed in the Associate of Science
Degree in Advanced Engine Performance are comprised of a comprehensive list of job
skills needed to work in the specialized field of automotive advanced engine
performance diagnostics. The purpose and goals of this Degree and is to provide
students with the State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair's (BAR) standards
and determined core skills, knowledge, and training to become a successful Licensed
Smog Technician. The State of California requires a Licensed Smog Check Technician
to have a number of high-level skills and knowledge. They use extensive high-tech
knowledge and skills regarding the proper operation of the internal combustion engine
and computerized engine management systems every day on the job. They also must
use effective communication skills every day when interacting with customers and their
peers, including reading, writing , and verbal tasks.
Anticipated effects: The skills developed will enhance the student's ability to complete
the industry-recognized Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests A6
(Electrical/Electronic Systems), A8 (Engine Performance), and L 1 (Advanced Engine
Performance). The degree is designed to prepare an individual for transfer and/or
entry-level employment as an Automotive Engine Performance Diagnostic Technician.
Adding the Advanced Engine Performance Degree to the Rio Hondo course catalog will
offer another pathway for Automotive Technology students to achieve a higher-level set
of knowledge and skills specifically for Engine Management and Emission Control
Systems Diagnostics. It will allow them to successfully gain employment as an
Enhanced Area Smog Technician. It will also allow them to eventually progress to the
CSU or UC system to earn a baccalaureate degree if they desire to do so.

Anticipated effects: The program will allow the student to develop organizational skills

materials management, and related areas. The sequence of courses will provide the
student the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills demanded of the modern

Description and need for change: As part of SB 1440, the Associate in Arts in
Kinesiology for Transfer was developed using the TMC (Transfer Model Curriculum).
This is a new degree for the college. The courses listed for the degree are existing
courses. Below are the requirements for the degree:
The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer is designed to provide students preparing to transfer with the foundation to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology. Students will be able to pursue careers in teaching, coaching, physical therapy, athletic training, and adaptive physical education. The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer (AA-T) Degree is intended to meet the
lower division requirements for Kinesiology majors (or similar majors) at a CSU campus
that offers a Kinesiology baccalaureate degree.

This degree is designed for the transfer-oriented student who seeks to explore Kinesiology in preparation for a Bachelor's degree. Students will gain information and experience in areas that will prepare them for a job or a career in the field of teaching, youth or professional sports, coaching, fitness and health industry, physical therapy, athletic training, sports management, and lifesaving skills in First Aid and C.P.R. The degree will provide students the opportunity to pursue work in: youth sports and summer camps, in the fitness industry, assisting physical education professionals and creating new business opportunities in the area of physical activity and sports. In addition to the courses listed below, the following additional requirements must be met for completion of the AA-T Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer: 1. 2. needed to work in the area of business marketing. Many entry level jobs require some
marketing function (retail, sales, merchandising, etc.), however, the degree in business
marketing would help to differentiate our graduates from all others seeking those entry
level jobs.
Anticipated effects: Statistics generated by the Bureau of Labor suggest that in the
decade representing 2008-2018 , there will be tremendous job growth opportunities in
most career segments that represent general marketing and advertising. Of those
career paths, Market Research Analyst is anticipated to have a 40 .8% growth rate
followed by an anticipated growth rate of 27.7% in Advertising and Sales agents. It is
estimated that our students will be more likely to be hired in marketing careers as a
result of their newly acquired education coupled with their und~rstanding of diversity
issues and the secondary language skills many of these students possess.

Description and need for the change: Previously, Rio Hondo offered a Career
Certificate in Transmission Service. The Certificate of Achievement raises the level of
the Career Certificate by receiving the State Chancellor'S Office approval. The goal of
the Certificate of Achievement in Transmission Service is to prepare the. students for
employment as an automotive repair technician servicing automatic and/or manual
transmissions, transaxles and powertrain components at a vehicle dealership, an
independent repair facility or a vehicle fleet operation. Another goal is to prepare the
student toward completion of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification tests A­
2 (Automatic TransmissionlTransaxle) and/or A-3 (Manual Drive Train and Axles).
Through this education, the student will learn and develop the necessary competencies
and skills for immediate entry-level employment.
Anticipated effects: This Certificate addresses Southern California economic growth by
focusing on the expressed needs of regional employers with an emphasiS on an
improved competency level of entry level automotive service/repair technicians. The
program leverages industry resources and combines the resources of the district and
industry partners. The program coordinates expertise from business, labor and trade
associations to assist new and incumbent workers to upgrade their skills and move up

Description and need for the change: Rio Hondo College has an urgent need for new
degrees in the Communications and Languages area. The AA-T Degree in English (and
similar majors) is valuable for a number of reasons . Primarily the degree prepares
students for baccalaureate majors in English (and similar majors). This major also
applies to upper division majors in Creative Writing, Journalism, Cultural Studies, and
Education, as well as other academic fields . .In addition, students with an AA-T in
English (and similar majors) can apply this degree toward a minor field while pursuing a
broad spectrum of baccalaureate majors such as business, communications, history,
philosophy, and pre-law, among others. The courses required for the degree are
existing courses.
Anticipated effects:
For students who finish their formal education with this AA-T degree, the program in
English (and similar majors) offers an area of concentrated study that promotes critical
reading and thinking and successful writing throughout their working lives. This
program will enhance students' lifelong learning by familiarizing them with a diversity of
responses to life as lived in different communities through time. The Associate in Arts in
English for Transfer (AA-T) Degree is designed to provide foundation studies in English
(or similar majors) for those interested in working toward a Bachelor's Degree in English
(or similar majors) from a four-year college or university. The degree program is also
relevant for those interested in developing critical thinking, interpretive reading,
analytical and research writing, and presentation skills to apply to broader educational
and professional goals.

Description and need for the change: In compliance with the requirements of S8 1440,
the goal of this program is to prepare students for a scientific and technological world by
preparing them with mathematical tools and qualitative and quantitative thinking skills In
order to understand the physical universe.
The Associate in Science in Physics for Transfer (AS-T) degree will meet the lower
division requirements for Physics and Physics Education majors at a California State
University campus that offers a Physics baccalaureate degree. The courses required for

the new degree are existing courses.
Anticipated effects: The Associate in Science in Physics will prepare those students
interested in laying a foundation for further study and for a Bachelors Degree in Physics
and Physics Education. Since physics is the most basic of sciences, this degree will
also satisfy the lower division requirements for a variety of baccalaureate degrees
including, Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics,and Computer Science.
Students will be ready to transfer to any four-year university or college, confident in that

2. Achievement of a minimum GPA of at least 2.0 in all CSU-transferable

3. Completion of the 24 semester units in the major with a grade of "c" or better or
a "P" if the course is taken on a pass-no pass basis.

3) Associate in Science in Eary ChiJdhood Edueation for Transfer
Description and need for the change: Currently the department has a broader Child
Development terminal degree which includes a wide range of electives focused on
specialization courses focusing on infants and toddlers, school age children and
educational programs for these age groups along with two courses in Special
Education. There is also a general Certificate of Achievement in Child Development
and a 15 unit Certificate of Achievement for Preschool Teacher which meets minimum
legal requirements to work in the preschool classroom.
The Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education for Transfer (AS-T) Degree is
intended to meet the lower division requirements for Early Childhood Education majors
(or similar majors) at a CSU campus that offers an Early Childhood Education
baccalaureate degree. The Early Childhood Education Transfer Degree did not require
the development of new courses.
Anticipated effects:
This degree is designed for students interested in garnrng the basic concepts and
applications of the field of Early Childhood Education and for students looking to meet
the state minimum requirements to work in the field. This degree will provide students
with a solid foundation in theory, pedagogy, principles and practices that will serve them
for either transferring to a California State University or in the workplace.
