It’s officially tax time in the United States again. The IRS has reported that tax
scams arrived early this year. Tax scams come in many different forms. Some
scams are attempts to spoof the IRS to convince you to click malicious links or
attachments. Other scams offer tax preparation help in order to trick you into
turning over your personal information. Some scams even try to convince you that
you don’t have to pay taxes.
If you receive an email or a message on your social networking site that appears to be from the IRS, it is
probably a phishing scam. Read more about how the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by
email or any social media tools to request personal or financial information.
If you get an offer from someone that sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. For more information, see the IRS article, Tax Scams – How to Recognize and Avoid Them.
Tax Scams - How to Report Them
Participating in an illegal scheme to avoid paying taxes can result in imprisonment and fines, as well as
the repayment of taxes owed with penalties and interest. If you become aware of any abusive tax scams,
please report them to the appropriate contact below.

Maryland attends National Women in Ag Conference
The Women in Agriculture Educators National Conference was held March 28-29, 2012 at The Peabody in
downtown Memphis, Tennessee.
This biennial conference featured 3 keynote presentations, over 40 hours of individual concurrent session
presentations, a networking reception which includes a poster session, and a post conference tour to discuss
Annie’s Project .
The Women in Agriculture Educators National Conference brings together private and public sector educators, crop insurance agents, lenders, and other agricultural professionals who are involved in outreach education, to share ongoing and emerging successful risk management education efforts directed toward women
and their families who are involved in production agriculture. Conference participants learned about educational efforts which assist women producers to effectively manage financial, production, marketing, legal
and human resource risks associated with their agribusinesses.
University of Maryland Annie’s Project leaders Jenny Rhodes and Jessica Renshaw were in attendance. Jenny and Jessica learned about programs in other states as well as ANNIE’S PROJECT
PART II which focuses on farm transfer which we hope to offer in January of 2013.
