COMMUNITY
The borough of Madison (population 16,530) is a suburban community 25 miles west of New York City and three
miles southeast of Morristown, New Jersey. The High School also receives students from Harding Township.
Madison is primarily an upper middle class community with substantial tax support and extensive community
involvement in school affairs. Madison High School is within one mile of Drew University, The College of St.
Elizabeth, and Fairleigh Dickinson University, and students take advantage of the various educational and cultural
opportunities at these institutions.
SCHOOL
Madison High School is a four year comprehensive high school with an enrollment, in 2015-2016, of approximately
853 students. The building was opened in 1958 and expanded in 1966 and 2008. The building is home to a
state of the art media center and construction was recently completed on new science labs, a new TV studio, a
gymnasium and an art room. There are over 90 full time faculty members, more than 70% of whom have masters’
degrees. The school is accredited by the State of New Jersey.
CURRICULUM
Designed to meet the needs and abilities of all students, a variety of courses are offered. Advanced Placement
courses are available in English (Language and Literature), Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science,
Physics, Music Theory, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese Statistics, Calculus, American History, Psychology,
U.S. Government and Politics, and European History. There are honors courses in English, History, Math, World
Languages, and Science. Also available are six year programs in World Language (study beginning in the 7th
grade). A work-study program and service learning program are available. Technical programs are available
through a “shared” arrangement with the Morris County School of Technology. Students also have the option to
take virtual classes through our contract with the Virtual High School consortium. Madison High School offers a full
program of 21 varsity sports to students. There is a band, wind ensemble, stage band, orchestra, chorus, drama
group, and numerous clubs, activities, academic teams and leadership opportunities.
GUIDANCE
The guidance office consists of 5 counselors (including the director) and two administrative assistants. We
welcome college representatives during the school day. The department is a member of the New Jersey
Association of College Admissions Counseling, The National Association of College Admissions Counseling, and
The College Board. Counselors remain active in professional development and focus on counseling students to
find the right post-secondary “fit.”
