Description of Degree/Emphasis/Certificates AA Early Childhood Education Degree: The associate of arts in early childhood education is designed to serve students either as a stand-alone associate degree, or as a university transfer degree. The transfer option allows students to complete specific lower division courses at TMCC and obtain an associate of arts degree in Early Childhood Education; and then transfer to UNR as a junior to complete a bachelor of science degree in Human Development and Family Studies. Students are encouraged to obtain academic advisement from early childhood education faculty to facilitate the university transfer process. Unit Strategies Develop a marketing recruitment plan for the program and a website with the goal of identifying underserved students. Formalize community relationships through contracts or Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs). Improve communication among faculty. Ongoing Strengthen the advisory committee. Ongoing Compete The ECE coordinator keeps in contact with all full and adjunct faculty on an as needed basis. Faculty meetings are held once each semester for all ECE/HDFS faculty. Email and phone calls are used to communicate with faculty during the rest of the semester. The Program Coordinator meets individually with adjunct faculty regarding course changes, assessment, etc. An online section in Canvas has been developed to share program information and resources. The advisory committee bylaws were reviewed and revised in November of 2010, which clarified the role of the members. The composition of the advisory committee was also reviewed and recommendations for new/additional members considered. Some new members were appointed and terms of service were established to ensure that the committee has adequate representation from all sectors of the ECE field. A new committee chair was appointed in the Fall of 2013. A student representative was also appointed. Three of the four degrees in the ECE Program were Anticipated Resource Issues ATMCC Truolc- Me•dowe Community College TMCC PROGRAM UNIT REVIEW- ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT 2013-14 StatusUnit Strategies Pursue accreditation in 2007-2008 academic year. i.e. ongoing, complete Ongoing Ongoing Develop a more formal advising system for students in the program to identify the true program majors and improve graduation rate. Ongoing Action/Recap of accomplishments Work to do nationally accredited by ECADA in September of 2009. The AA/ECE with an emphasis in Administration degree could not be accredited because it did not yet meet the requirement of having at least one graduating class. That has since changed and the program will request ECADA accreditation for this degree. Annual reports have been submitted to ECADA each September and include updates about the program as well as assessment reports. The program's accreditation expires in 2016 and a selfstudy process in preparation for renewal will begin in FV 2014-15. The Program Coordinator works closely with the Academic Advisement Center to assure that all students interested in ECE receive timely and accurate academic advisement. Most students are referred to the Program Coordinator, who meets with them once per semester. Students may also work with Time line Anticipated Resource Issues Fall2016 The self-study and renewal process typically takes place over a two year period. Self-study activities will occur in the FV 2014-15. A peer reviewer site visit will occur in the spring of 2015. Fees are paid annually to maintain national accreditatio n. There is a renewal fee as well. During the site visit there will be additional costs associated with travel, lodging, meals, etc. for peer reviewers. The Program Coordinator has developed a formal system for academic advisement, including forms and permanent files for each student. Students who have established a pattern of regular academic advisement have made good progress toward degree completion. Improve graduation rate. Ongoing Each fa II the Office of Institutional Research provides a list of ECE majors who have been active within a three-year period. This list is used by the ECE Program for outreach and communication about advisement and other program updat es. The program had a Perkins grant(201a.2012)thatfunded a Student Support Project. The project included a mentor to who provided academic and personal support to students. Students who participated in this project were more successful in completing classes; evaluation data i_ndlcated they highly valued the support they received. The number of graduates increased after the period of this project. The program continues to seek funds to reinstate the Student Support Project. Once these are awarded the completion rates should increase significantly. This issue has been resolved primarily by establishing the ECE teaching lab in Sierra 117. When it is not in use for ECE/HDFS courses other areas use the space. The faculty have reviewed the catalog and made appropriate revisions to ensure that the catalog accurately depicts the courses and degrees of the program. This included the deletion of obsolete classes, revisions to several degree programs, and revisions to course descriptions. Additional changes will be made as needed or required by the college or NSHE system. TheFT faculty follow the TMCC WebCollege policies established for faculty and students which address some of the issues related to retention. The Program Coordinator Is working with adjunct faculty to assure they also adhere to these policies. Both FT faculty have completed the Quality Matters (QM) training. The Program Coordinator is in the process of reviewing online courses being taught by Timellne The first Skills Certificates will be awarded In FY 2014-1S.
