In Spring 2015 it was decided to
assess Outcome #2 to focus on
the oral skills of the students
participating in an oral interview,
as it was projected in the last
assessment of ITAL 114 for
Academic Year 2011-2012.
Once again, the following core
indicators were used:
A total of 8 students from ITAL
114 submitted to an oral
interview one-on-one with the
instructor. An assessment tool
containing ten questions was
used for the assessment. In the
communication area the topics
were hand.led adequately; ideas
clearly conveyed; requires little
effort to be understood; some
creativity. In the acruracy area
grammar mistakes were made
that did not affect meaning,
At an 85% accuracy response of
the core indicators used for the
interview, the levels for ITAL
I 14 are well above average and
therefore an effort should be
made to maintain such
percentages. The participants
seemed a bit more nervous than
usual, maybe because they
perceived the interview as a ' test'
of some sort. I believe that it
would be highly beneficial to get
the students more involved in

The following components were
assessed:

reasonable correct. In the area
of Oucncy it took longer than
necessary to organize thoughts.
The speech was somewhat
disjointed at times, but
intelhg1ble. Jn the area of
vocabulary mistakes were made
that do not affect meaning,
(wrong gender/ wrong
agreements) Adequate use of
vocabulary. In the area of
pronunciation Some
mispronunciation; meaning sull
clear; tries to ·sound' hke a
native Italian speaker. Some
participants showed a foreign
accent requiring sympathetic
listening, but sttll
comprehensible.
The assessment indicated that
none of the indicators assessed
(85 % accuracy) fell below a
70% accuracy level.

regular interviews throughout the
semester in order to familiarize
them with the process. I intend
to implement routine interviews
in the classroom in future
semesters to this effect
The next assessment tool for
ITAL 114 should again focus on
the written skills of the
participating students.
