COURSE ASSESSMENT REPORT (CAR) Revised 08/01/2011 Course Prefix, Number and Title: Econ 261 - Principles of Statistics I School/Unit: School of Business and Entrepreneurship Submitted by: Steven M Streeper Contributing Faculty: Diana McCoy Academic Year: 2011-2012 Complete and electronically submit your assessment report to your Department Chair/Coordinator/Director. As needed, please attach supporting documents and/or a narrative description of the assessment activities in your program or discipline. Course Outcomes In the boxes below, summarize the outcomes assessed in your course during the year. Outcome #1 Students shall define statistical concepts, use sampling techniques, calculate and interpret point estimates and other inferential measures, and present data in tables, functions, graphs and words. Outcome # 2 Students shall understand, explain and utilize basic rules of probability in calculations of random events in real world applications, using probability functions. Assessment Measures Assessment Results Use of Results Effect on Course In the boxes below, summarize the methods used to assess course outcomes during the last year. In the boxes below, summarize the results of your assessment activities during the last year. In the boxes below, summarize how you are or how you plan to use the results to improve student learning. Based on the results of this assessment, will you revise your outcomes? If so, please summarize how and why in the boxes below: Pre and Post tests are administered. Students work together in the computer lab to prepare a statistical report showing mastery of skill sets. Comparison of the Pre vs Post test showed improvement of about 4 percentage points and substantial reduction in standard deviation of 3 percentage points. The assessment results and the high rate of retention show that we are achieving this outcome. Detailed weekly homework problems and three examinations during semester are effective in this course. Students benefit from study groups, class participation and computer lab work. Pre and Post tests are administered. Pre-test showed students struggling with concepts and no experience with calculations. Post test showed improvement from an average of 83 to 87. All passing students demonstrated competency. The assessment results and the high rate of retention show that we are achieving this outcome. Detailed weekly homework problems and three examinations during semester are effective in this course. Students benefit from study groups, class participation and computer lab work. They shall understand and explain variability in repeated sampling including concepts such as Chebychev’s theoem and Central Limit Theorem. Assessment Measures Pre and Post tests are administered. Assessment Results Pre-test indicated had little or no experience or skill in summarizing data or presenting quantitative results. Dramatic improvement in test scores (see histogram for Post 2 graph) show competency for all but one student. Use of Results The assessment results and the high rate of retention show that we are achieving this outcome. Effect on Course Detailed weekly homework problems and three examinations during semester are effective in this course. Students benefit from study groups, class participation and computer lab work.
