Purpose:
“The purpose of a mascot is to symbolize school and community spirit used to enhance the tradition and emotions of its audience through exaggeration, characterization, and entertainment”.
College of the Mainland’s Fighting Duck mascot represents the college as an ambassador and entertainer at both on- and off-campus events. The mascot is generally accompanied by a “spotter” (another ambassador) who is responsible for controlling crowds and promoting fan interaction with the mascot.
The Student Ambassador Program at College of the Mainland consists of a select group of students chosen through an application and interview process. These students represent College of the Mainland both on and off campus while serving as recruiters, mentors, and role models to all students. The program seeks students from diverse backgrounds and programs who demonstrate exceptional communication and leadership skills. These talented and well-trained students provide the campus with resources to assist prospective and current students in the enrollment process.
Ambassadors represent the institution in outreach activities, and assists with recruitment activities and campus tours while promoting College of the Mainland in a positive manner. Student Ambassadors are also featured in college promotional materials to increase the awareness of COM’s programs and services.
Student Ambassadors assist with various outreach activities both on and off campus.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assisting with various campus events
Assisting with high school events and/or career fairs
Serving as encouraging role models for students
Providing students and the community with information regarding College of the Mainland’s programs and services
Serving as advocates for higher education
Performing other duties as requested
Required Qualifications:
Currently enrolled at College of the Mainland
Successful completion of at least nine (9) hours at College of the Mainland
Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
Ability to commit to a minimum of 30 hours of service per semester
Availability for some evening and/or weekend activities
Excellent communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills, including listening
Leadership skills or previous leadership experience
Previous volunteer or community service
