It is a great honor and a tremendous responsibility., I realized,, when I began planning this talk, that what I said would set the tone for what follows. And I also realized that, essentially, only two sets of themes were available to me: debt and despair, or change and hope. I figure that none of us needs me to confirm what we all know; our town is cash poor, and a whole lot of it – streets, sewers, parks, and schools – is simply falling apart. bowen 6 Key note speaker • We already know that. What we hope to do in the course of the meetings that follow is not to wallow in the debt and despair, but discover the hope and the change. Ladies and gentlemen, that will be the theme of my remarks this evening, and it is my wish that the spirit of hope and change will motivate our discussions during the next several days. bowen 7 Conclusion • Interpreting in a conference or seminar is not easy and requires skills and practice • The interpreter should try to find out the situation of the conference bowen 8
