Yes Research Centre / group affiliation: Centre for Astronomy Research group / centre website: http://astro.nuigalway.ie/ PI website / link to CV: http://astro.nuigalway.ie/staff/mlang/ Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max): If you are already involved in relevant scholarly activities relating to Brazil, please mention them here. The PI has over 25 years experience in the field of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy (h-index=30) and is a member of the international VERITAS collaboration which operates an array of gamma-ray telescopes in Arizona. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): “Very-high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics using the VERITAS telescope array.” About one hundred astrophysical sources of very high energy gamma radiation (E>100GeV) are known, including nearby supernova remnants and distant active galactic nuclei. The PhD project will involve using the VERITAS telescope array to study these objects to help uncover how they produce radiation with such incredible energies. Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: NUI Galway projects should emphasise features that are not typically available in Brazil – specific equipment, multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research groups etc. The Centre for Astronomy is a dynamic group of researchers with access to state-of-the-art international facilities such as VERITAS, the most sensitive instrument of its type in the Northern Hemisphere. Galway is a University city like no other in Ireland and a great place to live and study.
