I study the evolution and ecology of cephalopods and other molluscs, particularly groups that have radiated in the Southern Ocean and the deep sea. I am also interested in poorly known taxa such as sponges, cnidarians and ascidians occuring in the submarine canyon systems on the Irish continental margin. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Conservation and life history analysis of cephalopods This PhD will investigate the relationships between life history traits, extinction risks, spatial distribution and evolutionary history of a taxon with global extent to examine the phylogeographic processes governing the observed patterns. The project focuses on octopuses, because IUCN red data list information is currently being collated for this group and hence data on life history traits, extinction risks, and spatial distribution will be available. Furthermore, the evolutionary history of this group is the best understood of all cephalopods due to extensive molecular work during the last decade. Furthermore, cephalopods are particularly suited to this type of analysis because of their wide range of life history traits. Understanding how phylogenetic diversity relates to the extinction risk of a species can faciliate conservation efforts. Furthermore, this project will investigate which traits make some species rare or threatened and therefore what makes them susceptible to extinction. Because of the diversity of life-history traits in cephalopods, the findings will have wider applications than to cephalopods alone. Version 2 Universidade Nacional da Irlanda em Galway -- Ciência sem Fronteiras Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: NUI Galway projects should emphasise features that are not typically available in Brazil – specific equipment, multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research groups etc. Research will be based in the multi-disciplinary Ryan Institute and will involve registration in a structured PhD programme. It will utilize data obtained as part of the IUCN red-listing programme collated by the PI.
