Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Title: Mobile EEG and Brain Computer Interface Technology for Focus, Perception and Workload Estimation Description: This research will be focussed on the development of robust EEG processing techniques for deployment on Mobile EEG systems, specifically to support the development of mobile nonclinical Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology for use in applications that would benefit from automated measurement of users mental focus, perception and\or mental workload. The proposed research will have a number of specific aims: 1. Design, development and evaluation of efficient multichannel real time algorithms for detection and removal of movement and muscle artefacts in mobile EEG 2. Development of custom experimental paradigms to investigate the use of neuro-feedback and a training mechanism for enhancing focus and perception and the collection of EEG recordings for this paradigm on both lab and mobile EEG platforms 3. Analysis of EEG recordings using advanced techniques such as source localisation, synchrony measures (linear and non-linear) and graph theoretic approaches with a view to developing and evaluating novel algorithms for use in real time non-clinical BCI systems (e.g. applications including neuro-feedback, automated expedited collision detection, automated visual search etc.). Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: This project will build on existing and ongoing research work in the research group in the area of EEG processing and non-clinical Brain Computer Interface systems. This research groups has full access to both laboratory standard and mobile EEG acquistion systems and this research work will Version 2 Universidade Nacional da Irlanda em Galway -- Ciência sem Fronteiras be carried out in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Psychology in NUI, Galway. Furthermore, the project will be hosted in NUI Galway’s recently-opened School of Engineering, the largest in the country. This €40m building is equipped with state of the art laboratory facilities and a range of specialist development and test equipment. http://www.nuigalway.ie/new-engineering-building/ Name & contact details for project queries, if different from PI named above: As above Please indicate the graduates of which disciplines that should apply: Electrical, Electronic, Computer or Communications Engineering Computer Science Ciência sem Fronteiras / Science Without Borders Priority Area: Please indicate the specific programme priority area under which the proposed PhD project fits- choose only one (tick box): Engineering and other technological areas Pure and Natural Sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics, chemistry)/Physical Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geosciences) Health and Biomedical Sciences / Clinical, Pré-clinical and Health Sciences Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), Computing X Aerospace Pharmaceuticals Sustainable Agricultural Production Oil, Gas and Coal Renewable Energy Minerals, Minerals Technology Biotechnology Nanotechnology and New Materials Technologies for Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Disasters Bioprospecting and Biodiversity Marine Sciences Creative Industry New technologies in constructive engineering Please indicate which of the following applies to this project (referring to Science Without Borders arrangements): Suitable only as a Full PhD (Y/N): Y Available to candidates seeking a Sandwich PhD arrangement (Y/N): N
