Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Screening and validation of angiogenic factors. There is a need to understand the role of glycosylation in the activity of different angiogenic factors participating in various diseases; critical limb ischemia, diabetes etc. This project will involve the screening of angiogenic genes and corresponding proteins using various bioinformatic approaches after extracting information from publically available clinical/microarray/proteomic datasets. Initial experiments will comprise validation of the selected genes, protein isolation and glycosylation characterisation. Functional bioassays (in vitro/in vivo) will be designed to investigate their effects on various kinds of progenitor cells and under different pathological conditions. Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: The glycoscience group is a multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, clinicians, bioinformatics specialists and molecular biologists. The glycoscience laboratory contains state of the facilities for glycoanalytic techniques and custom generated high‐throughput glyco‐profiling array systems including lectin arrays, mucin arrays, neoglycoconjugate arrays and synthetic glycan arrays. Discovery of novel glycan binding agents takes place using our discovery platforms (phage display and SELEX). Version 2 Universidade Nacional da Irlanda em Galway Ciência sem Fronteiras The group has significant industrial interactions across a wide spectrum of areas, including biopharma, diagnostics, functional foods and cosmetics. Industrial and academic links have been forged across the globe to provide glyco‐based solutions to current biomedical and biotechnological issues. NUI Galway has recently commenced a structured PhD programme further details can be found at http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/research‐postgraduate‐programmes/structured‐phd/#ColSci Name & contact details for project queries, if different from PI named above: Please indicate the graduates of which disciplines that should apply: 1.
