Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Glycosylation and communication between gut cells and bacteria during H.pylori colonisation Glycans play a key role in host‐pathogen interactions in the gut, with emerging evidence for cross‐ talk between the two cell types. This PhD project will be a comparative investigation of how a select panel of gastro‐intestinal cell lines respond at the transcriptomic and glycan levels to the presence/colonisation of Helicobacter pylori strains. The focus will we be on how the surface glycans of the host cells respond to evade bacteria or how the bacteria coerce the host cells to encourage infection. The following techniques will be used during this project: cell culture, microarray analysis, qPCR, lectin and glycan arrays. Version 2 Universidade Nacional da Irlanda em Galway Ciência sem Fronteiras Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: The glycoscience group is a multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, clinicians, bioinformatics specialists and molecular biologists. The glycoscience laboratory contains state of the facilities for glycoanalytic techniques and custom generated high‐throughput glyco‐profiling array systems including lectin arrays, mucin arrays, neoglycoconjugate arrays and synthetic glycan arrays. Discovery of novel glycan binding agents takes place using our discovery platforms (phage display and SELEX). The group has significant industrial interactions across a wide spectrum of areas, including biopharma, diagnostics, functional foods and cosmetics. Industrial and academic links have been forged across the globe to provide glyco‐based solutions to current biomedical and biotechnological issues. NUI Galway has recently commenced a structured PhD programme further details can be found at http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/research‐postgraduate‐programmes/structured‐phd/#ColSci Name & contact details for project queries, if different from PI named above: Please indicate the graduates of which disciplines that should apply: 1.
