The literature and theory of supplier involvement in the design and manufacture of products in the automotive sector has not kept pace with developments in the industry.
The seminar explores the previously undocumented emergence of full service vehicle manufacturers (FSV) which both design and manufacture whole vehicles for other manufacturers. The emergence of FSVs is explained using transaction cost ideas as the firms do not carry the costs of developing engines and power trains and so are competitive in traditionally marginal markets. Recently, FSVs have seen a shakeout with some growing while others have faltered. The seminar will look to explain the differing success as being competitive when capabilities shift from design to production as vehicles become established in the market.
