NURS 523
FINANCIAL AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT FOR NURSE LEADERS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course focuses on financial and resource management for the nurse leader. The course
provides students the skills and knowledge to perform a variety of functions related to financial
and resource management including budgetary functions such as operating, expense, revenue,
capital, and performance budgets, planning, controlling, management of costs associated with
staff/skill mix, and cost analysis. Key concepts such as strategic management, reimbursement
and payor mix, forecasting economic and marketing factors are explored for decision making.
Students will be required to perform financial and budgeting operations and spread sheet analysis
using Microsoft® Excel.
RATIONALE
This course provides financial and resource management skills and knowledge required of
nursing administrators to operate health care systems in today’s changing economic climate. The
course helps meet standards of graduate level nursing education as articulated by the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the American Nurses Association’s Scope and
Standards for Nursing Administration.

The student will complete 3 Discussion Board Forums throughout this course.
Threads must be at least 500 words, and each reply must be at least 250 words. All
threads must be written in current APA format and include a reference list.

Question Sets (2)
The student will answer a set of questions in a Microsoft Word document.
Citations from the text or other sources must be in current APA format.
E.
Financial Exercises (4)
The student will complete 4 Financial Exercises throughout this course. Each
Financial Exercise will cover a different topic. The student will answer a series of
questions in a Microsoft Word document. Each Financial Exercise must include a
title and reference page in current APA format, and must be submitted as 1
document.

Resource Management Paper
This paper will be completed in 3 parts:
1.
Annotated Bibliography
The student will submit an Annotated Bibliography in current APA
format. This bibliography must include a minimum of 7–10 peer
reviewed annotated references.
2.
Outline
The student will complete a comprehensive outline..
3.
Paper
The student will write a 10–15-page paper in current APA format.
This paper should include a title page, abstract, introduction, body
with proper headings, recommendations, and conclusions. The title
page, abstract, and reference page are not included in the length
requirement. This assignment must be submitted through Safe
Assign.

Late Assignment Policy
If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must
contact the instructor immediately by email.
Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the
instructor will receive the following deductions:
1.
Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will
receive a 10% deduction.
2.
Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20%
deduction.
3.
Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the
class will not be accepted.
4.
Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be
reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis.
