B.
Explain basic research terms, the process by which research design informs the
choice of statistical procedure, and the way in which questions and hypotheses
should reflect a chosen design and statistical procedure.
C.
Define basic statistical terms including normal and non-normal distributions of
data, measures of central tendency (i.e. mean, median, and mode), variability (i.e.
range, variances, standard deviations, and the standard error of the mean), levels
of measurement, and probability.
D.
Use SPSS to calculate and interpret descriptive statistics, to explore data and
solve statistical problems, and to communicate statistical results in accordance

E.
Describe statistical hypothesis testing, including rejecting and failing to reject the
null hypothesis.
F.
Define Type I and Type II errors in statistical decision-making, the power of a
statistical procedure, and the maximizing of power.
G.
Describe the factors that inform the choice of a statistical procedure, choosing
appropriate statistical procedures to solve educational research problems.
H.
Describe the logic of selected statistical procedures.
I.
Identify a potential dissertation topic while reading about the dissertation process.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A.
Textbook Readings and Presentations
The candidate will complete assigned readings from course texts and course
documents. The candidate will also view corresponding instructor material
including presentations, tutorials, and notes.
B.
Course Requirements Checklist (CRC)
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will
complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1
C.
Program Quizzes
The candidate will complete the Background Check Quiz and either the Ed.D. or
Ed.S. Advising Guide Quiz, whichever coincides with his/her degree.
D.
Discussion Board Forums (4)
Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate
will complete 4 Discussion Board Forums in two parts: 1) the posting of a thread in
response to the stated prompt and 2) the posting of at least 2 replies to peers’
threads. The thread is due by Wednesday of the pertinent module/week and must be
150–300 words. The replies are due by the last day of the pertinent module/week
and must be 100 words. All posts must be in current APA format and include

SPSS Assignments (4)
EDUC 712 Course Syllabus
The candidate will use the SPSS software to complete the SPSS assignments.
Using the SPSS data set provided and corresponding case studies, the candidate
will choose the appropriate analysis, run the statistical procedure, analyze the
data, and report the results in a properly formatted APA results section. The
results section must be written using the candidate’s own words and structure;
using the wording and structure of the course examples will be considered
plagiarism. The candidate will also submit his/her SPSS output copy and pasted at
the end of the submitted Word document. Each SPSS Assignment is due by the
end of the identified module/week. When submitting the document, the candidate
must use the following file name: course, last name, first name, assignment (i.e.,
EDUC712_Doe_John_tTest).
F.
Check Your Understanding (CYU) Quizzes (12)
The candidate will take 12 open-book/open-notes quizzes covering the assigned
Warner textbook readings and corresponding course presentations and tutorials.
Each quiz will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions. Each quiz may be taken up
to 3 times. The score earned on the final attempt will be the score earned on the
quiz. There will not be a chance to revert back to an earlier score, even if it is
higher. The candidate will have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete each quiz. It
is recommended that the candidate complete the comprehension questions at the
end of each Warner chapter to prepare for the quizzes, as many quiz questions are
derived from the comprehension questions.
G.
Final Exam: Check Your Understanding Test and SPSS Assignment
After completing the textbook readings, viewing the presentations, and
completing the course assignments, the candidate will complete a 2-part final
exam. The first part of the exam is a test consisting of 60 multiple-choice
questions covering all of the assigned readings from the Warner text and
corresponding course material. The candidate will have 2 hours and 45 minutes to
complete this part. The second part of the exam is an SPSS test similar to the
SPSS assignments completed in this course. Each portion of the exam will be
graded separately. The Final Exam: SPSS Assignment is to be submitted to both
Blackboard SafeAssign and LiveText.
