Amoo. SOC 212 - Social Statistics (2 Units) Brief Overview of the Course The course covers the basics of Statistics and how it can be related to sociological aspects of life. It is an introductory subject that is meant to prepare students for the reality of their courses especially in sociology. It is be offered by beginners in the study of social statistics. Specifically, the course focuses on the elements of social statistics and how it relates to the study of social phenomena. Method of Delivery/Teaching Aids Lectures are conducted with audio-visuals as well as multimedia projector. Teaching Aids The electronic Board, Public Address System (PAC) and lecture notes. The lecture notes will be available on the portal system for students’ easy access. Grading System End of semester Exam is 70% and Continuous Assessment (CA) is graded over 30%. The CA comprises of Mid-Semester Test, a number of impromptu tests, Assignments; Class Attendance and Class Participation. Class Behaviour and Ground Rules Students are expected to be in class before the lecture commences. Only a grace period of 5mins for one (1) hour lecture and 10mins for 2 hours lecture would be allowed. Lecture attendance is compulsory and as a rule in the University, a minimum of 75% attendance is required to qualify for the final exam. Prior notice should be given if a student is to be absent from lecture. It is equally expected of students to be well-behaved and participate actively during lectures. Topics for Assignments/Students Activities Assignments are given to students on selected topics that would be presented in class. This is in addition to the exercises that are usually given at the end of every topic/module from the reading materials. This is planned to aid overall mastery of the course. Greater focus is therefore placed on the drive for Capacity Building, Responsibility and Possibility Mentality. The course will also help the students to further develop their quantitative and analytical techniques and become effective and responsible leaders in their life’s endeavours. Contemporary Issue/Industry Relevance Statistics is the chief instrumentality through which the progress of development is measured and largely controlled. Statistical thinking is a necessity for efficient citizenship just like the ability to read and write. Thus, the basics of the subject are indispensable to all students. Introduction to statistical symbols Some mathematical reminders Module II: Organization and Classification of Data Introduction: Data collection procedure Classification of Data Tabular Presentation, meaning and importance Diagrammatic presentation of data, Graphical presentation of data Frequency distribution, Grouped and ungrouped frequency Histogram, Ogive, Bar chart, Pie charts and Stem and Leaf plots Module III: Introduction to quantitative data generation Levels of Measurement (nominal data, ordinal data, interval data and ratio data); Review of survey design instrument of data collection (cross sectional data and longitudinal data) Unit of analysis, Relationship between measurement and statistical analysis.
