This programme attracts the in-house lawyer who is ready to develop themselves for a senior GC role, or in-house lawyers with the potential to rapidly advance into more senior roles.
The programme is designed to be relevant and applicable to all inhouse lawyers, regardless of the type of organisation in which they are employed. The degree of experience is not relevant as the course will be tailored to each participant’s unique context.
The programme has been carefully developed from our research into in-house lawyers. By uncovering the four types of service that an in-house function can deliver, and the types of roles that in-house lawyers have when delivering these, we are able to provide each participant with a uniquely personal roadmap.
As well as learning from the tutors and expertise of Cranfield, the participants are encouraged to utilise the high calibre of participants who attend.

The programme incorporates a rich mixture of videos, reading material, reflection exercises, applied learning, interactive webinars and immersive face-to-face modules. So rather than a series of lectures, each participant is taken on a journey outside, then inside their own organisation. Using tools on strategy, commercial understanding and finance, among others, the Programme Director and tutor team will guide you through the understanding to the implementation phase, revealing previously hidden insights. Each module is also supported by the inclusion of a highly experienced in-house lawyer who will provide a keynote address.
By deepening the understanding of strategy, culture, finance, people and organisational models, each participant will reveal for themselves where and how their existing inhouse team and function does and doesn’t add value. Learning this skill not only reveals what needs to change or stay the same, and how to do this, it builds confidence, expertise, credibility and ability to influence permanently.

MODULE1: UNDERSTANDING BUSINESS DRIVERS AND CULTURE
This module shows in-house lawyers where to look, the questions to ask and what to look for, in order to reveal the drivers of value within their own organisation. Using these approaches will provide a new foundation even the most experienced will benefit from.
It is widely accepted that skill in this area enhances commercial judgment, influence, impact, confidence and immediately increases the quality and relevance of the legal advice offered by in-house lawyers. It also significantly improves a grasp of the nature of commercial risk.
NEW LEADERSHIP PRACTICES DEVELOPED WILL INCLUDE:
• IDENTIFYING STRATEGIC ASSETS
• FINANCE AND ACCOUNTS FOR IN-HOUSE LAWYERS
• UNCOVERING ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE
MODULE 2: ALIGNING THE LEGAL FUNCTION TO THE ORGANISATION
This module builds on the first, and uses the insight gained from it to ask
‘What is the optimum in-house legal function for my organisation?’. Tools and techniques to determine What does our business need from us? How should it look? What type of service should we deliver?
The most highly regarded and influential legal functions are those which have mastered how they can work in a way that aligns with the organisation in which they work. This means seeing options and making choices about the type of internal legal service offered. You will learn how to do this systematically in any environment.
NEW LEADERSHIP PRACTICES DEVELOPED WILL INCLUDE:
• HOW LEGAL FUNCTIONS ADD VALUE
• ADVANCED FINANCE AND ACCOUNTS FOR IN-HOUSE LAWYERS
• HOW IN-HOUSE LAWYERS UNCOVER DRIVERS OF FINANCIAL IMPACT
Book online at www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/cgc
MODULE 3: CONNECTING THE LEGAL FUNCTION TO THE
ORGANISATION
This module turns the focus from the organisation to the legal function and team. Participants will ask ‘How should the legal function interact with the rest of the organisation to add the most value? How should relations be managed?
What are our own drivers of influence and impact?’ And crucially, ‘How does who I am influence how I approach this?’
The way in which in-house legal functions add value comes from a combination of what they do and how they do it. The way they interact with the rest of the organisation is often overlooked but vital. Each participant will develop the skill of having a clear perspective on what is required to be an impactful team in your own organisation.
NEW LEADERSHIP PRACTICES DEVELOPED WILL INCLUDE:
• STAKEHOLDER IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT
• PSYCHOMETRIC EVALUATION, PERSONAL COACHING AND IMPLICATIONS
• DEVELOPING A CAMPAIGN OF INFLUENCE
MODULE 4: LEADING A HIGH PERFORMING LEGAL TEAM
In-house legal teams vary from a sole lawyer to large multifunctional teams.
This module covers the Leadership Practice of Designing, Directing and
Developing in-house teams. What are the specific attributes in-house lawyers possess which influence how they work and are managed? How can you tailor your approach to ensure the best response from them? And what do you need to learn about yourself as a potential leader?
SUBJECTS THAT WILL BE COVERED INCLUDE:
• DESIGNING A HIGH PERFORMING LEGAL TEAM
• DIRECTING A HIGH PERFORMING LEGAL TEAM
• DEVELOPING A HIGH PERFORMING LEGAL TEAM

At the conclusion of the programme each participant gathers together a summary of the work they have done throughout the programme, demonstrating what they have learned, what impact this has had on them and others, and what tangible ways this has added value to their organisation.
