PUBLIC SECTOR PERFORMANCE ROUNDTABLE 25 February 2014 Cranfield School of Management 09:30 Coffee and registration 10:00 Welcome – Pietro Micheli, Cranfield School of Management 10:05 Mindfulness as an approach to improve individual and team performance Jutta Tobias, Lecturer, Cranfield School of Management Mindfulness, an ancient concept originating in Buddhist thought, has recently become a hot topic in business and management. Mindfulness relates to responding to events in an open, non-judgmental and compassionate way. Mindful people tend to be more resilient and manage stress more effectively. This is why corporations such as Apple and Google have been embedding mindfulness practices in their workplaces, and there is an increasing amount of evidence suggesting that mindfulness is linked to high performance in organizations. What makes mindfulness particularly relevant for performance managers in both private and public sector settings is that people can learn mindfulness fairly easily. In this session, we will explore together what mindfulness is and looks like for an individual, and how it relates to high performing teams in organizations. We will also discuss what kinds of organizational settings are particularly conducive to benefit from mindfulness, and finally introduce some ways to bring mindfulness into organizations in a respectful and sustainable way. 11:30 Coffee break 11:45 Introducing lean management in the public sector: the case of the British Library Andy Appleyard, Head of Document Supply and Customer Services, British Library Before joining the British Library, Andy spent 15 years working for Nippondenso (Toyota) initially managing the Quality Department before appointed to General Manager, Operations.
