Mindfulness as an approach to improve individual and team performance
Jutta Tobias, Lecturer, Cranfield School of Management
Mindfulness, an ancient concept originating in Buddhist thought, has recently become a hot topic in
business and management. Mindfulness relates to responding to events in an open, non-judgmental
and compassionate way. Mindful people tend to be more resilient and manage stress more
effectively. This is why corporations such as Apple and Google have been embedding mindfulness
practices in their workplaces, and there is an increasing amount of evidence suggesting that
mindfulness is linked to high performance in organizations.
What makes mindfulness particularly relevant for performance managers in both private and public
sector settings is that people can learn mindfulness fairly easily. In this session, we will explore
together what mindfulness is and looks like for an individual, and how it relates to high performing
teams in organizations. We will also discuss what kinds of organizational settings are particularly
conducive to benefit from mindfulness, and finally introduce some ways to bring mindfulness into
organizations in a respectful and sustainable way.

Introducing lean management in the public sector: the case of the British Library
Andy Appleyard, Head of Document Supply and Customer Services, British Library
Before joining the British Library, Andy spent 15 years working for Nippondenso (Toyota) initially
managing the Quality Department before appointed to General Manager, Operations. During that
tenure he learned and practiced the Toyota Production System, generally accepted as the forebear of
Lean Management. At the British Library he has been leading the adoption of Lean Management and
continuous improvement approaches.
In this session, Andy will first introduce the British Library and outline some of the challenges they are
currently facing. Then, he will explain how they have deployed Lean to help shape the way in which
they face these challenges and describe how he has used his knowledge of the automotive sector in
determining a way forward. Finally he will present short case studies to bring to life the range of
projects and type of benefits achieved.
