1 Online Case Using Diagnostic Maneuver
Choices
Dr. Sharon Allen - Unique online sim. picking limited diagnostic
maneuvers ( 8 of 12 possible) then making a final diagnosis
Rationale: Converted an expensive standardized patient experience into an online examination
experience. Wanted to capture more than a “single score” so added “confidence indicators,”
multimedia results (images, sound), and wanted to make exam flexible part of other concurrent
activities in IERC - so setup online case with portable laptop in IERC computer lab.
Use-Case Applications: Many application options! Great for giving students exposure to more
cases, useful to practice discrimination of test ordered, helpful to see “gaps” in student critical
thinking, Could be Pre or Post follow-up experience. Can add multimedia (sound, images, video).
Great way to capture unusual or challenging cases for review, could be an effectvie group activity
as well. Number of tests allowed and possible choices can be modified.

Karolinska “test + feedback” in sections
Rationale: Needed way to put paper & CD version online. fast. Wanted a
“summative” test using student groups. Used swedish Karolinska Institue
testing model with repeating test & feedback units
Use-Case Application: Useful for summative group work as mid-term or
final group testing/learning experience. Should be comprehensive, focus on
critical skills/objectives. Needs larger block of time and detailed specific
feedback is critical to “correct” errors
