Work and Organisations – MG332 Work and Organisations MG332 Objective Lecturer(s) Times Overall Learning Outcomes Work and Organisations is about critically examining the theories, policies and practices that govern how people are managed in a variety of organisational and business settings. It builds on basic concepts covered in Organisational Behaviour and HRM. The objective is to develop critical analysis and skills concerning the way work and organisations are managed. The course is a final year programme of learning in which abstract theoretical concepts and models are unpacked, broken-down and questioned in a critical and engaging way. Name Office Ext E-mail Dr Tony Dundon Room 326 2356 tony.royle@nuigalway.ie Lectures: Day Time Venue Mondays 1-3 AC201 Upon completion of this course you will be able to: Critically examine competing perspectives on work, employment and management practice Recognise the value of critical management studies perspectives in explaining organisational structure and management practices Understand the shifting nature of workplace boundaries and the implications for employees Critical evaluate competing perspectives on employee voice and representation at the workplace Format Weekly, the course involves a one hour lecture and a one hour seminar. The seminar activity is will form the first hour of each week and will involve a discussion of the previous week’s lecture. The second hour will be a formal lecture providing the input for the following week’s seminar discussion. This will give students an overview of the subject matter and provide the opportunity to engage with the material in greater detail and complement the student’s own private study. The aim is to develop informal and interactive discussion, and it is essential that students prepare for class by reading some of the recommended reading associated with each week’s topic.
