Reading comprehension Sound Switching Strategy Appropriate Grade Level: 1st –2nd grade Procedures/Steps: o The child sits across from the teacher facing her/him. o The children are presented with a variety of books by the teacher for reading difficulty and interest. o When the selection is made, the teacher asks the student to explain his or her reasoning for selecting the particular book. o The child looks at illustrations in the book, and in a sentence or two, predicts what the book will be about. o The child begins reading the book aloud. o During reading, the teacher cues mistakes and points out areas that may be incorrect. o After reading for 10 minutes the child summarizes what they have read.
