Work Breakdown Structures
• Work breakdown structures are useful in
determining the order in which tasks must be
completed
• These structures outline what needs to be
completed before another task can begin
• The structure serves as a visual interpretation of
your schedule

Managing Your Project
• Each team is required to create a spreadsheet or
other document incorporating the following
things:
– Task # (tasks in order) & Task description
– Primary person, Secondary or back-up person
– Estimated start date, Estimated end date
– Due date or deadline
– Actual start date, Actual end date
– Estimated amount of time to complete task
– Actual amount of time to complete task

• Examine the syllabus
• Brainstorm in your group to decide what possible
tasks for the group will be
• After you have decided these tasks, break them
down into smaller parts where possible
• Put these tasks in order from start to finish for
the project

• Look at the syllabus and “Team Design Project
Description” to see what your weekly
assignments will be
• These assignments will help to develop a timeline
for your group
• Work backwards from turning in the written
report, giving the oral report through these
assignment due dates

Hints for Ordering Tasks
• Start with what major assignment or task needs
to be completed for each week of the quarter
• Then use your list of smaller tasks to fill in what
needs to be done each day
• Decide which tasks must be completed before
another phase of your project is started and allow
for that time – use your work breakdown
structure
