GLOSSARY Astringent A pore-closing substance used on the skin to draw tissue together. Character An individual acting out a particular role in a play, movie, or other dramatic work. Cold cream A thick cream used for cleaning and softening the skin, especially on the face. Foundation A type of cosmetic in cream or cake form, usually colored, that is applied as a base for makeup. Hypoallergenic A type of product unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Makeup Cosmetic products, especially for the face, for example, lipstick and mascara. Mascara A thick colored paste applied to the eyelashes with a fine brush to darken them and give the appearance of greater length and thickness. Pancake A semisolid theatrical makeup, typically applied with a damp sponge. Powder To cover something with powder, or to sprinkle powder on something. Powder puff A soft or fluffy pad used for putting powder on the face or skin. Rouge Red or pink makeup in powder or cream form used to add color to the cheeks and accentuate the shape of the cheekbones. Shadow A colored cosmetic for the area around the eyes, especially the eyelids.
