Web Advisory Committee M E E T I N G M I N U T E S - J U LY 11 , 2 0 1 2 In Attendance: Cal Anderson, Beverly Bavaro, Kathy Berry, Yuliana Chavez, Kyle Dalpe, Kate Kirkpatrick, Echo Lynch, Brandy Scarnati, Chris Winslow, Barbie Wright, Steve Zideck, SGA Members: Micah Kawamoto, Jason Loomis, Stephanie Prevost Meeting called to order: 11:00 a.m. Cal welcomed everyone. Current Business Website Redesign/Facelift Cal showed prototype pages for the website redesign. He said it's not a major overhaul, but more "refreshing" the look and feel of the site, to enhance and modernize it. Cal noted that the new design was based on research and reviews of literally thousands of academic and educational websites. He said that the new design isn't anything that hasn't been done before, and in fact others are doing it now, but we currently are not. Today's demos are prototypes only, with placeholder text and photos, just to give the committee an idea of the direction we are going. Some of the improved features include: • 970px fixed-width design using custom CSS grid system • Expandable accordion-style vertical menus • "Mega menus" • Carousel-style rotating images and headlines for TMCC home page • "Sticky footers" to avoid blank space at the bottom of pages • Enhanced form fields with inline form field validation • Upgraded document icons for improved usability • Up-to-date coding techniques with heavy use of CSS 3.0 and HTML 5 elements • Contemporary web fonts for enhanced look and feel • Improved social media and cloud-based sharing • Improved framework for mobile device access • New campus images/photos • Advanced web graphics The more prominently placed social media links at the top and bottom of the pages will make it easier for TMCC to be publicized. In response to a question from Kathy Berry about the Facebook links, Cal noted they would link to the main TMCC Facebook page, and that any specific departmental Facebook pages could be linked from the sidebars. Cal mentioned that the new format will be fully customizable and will use a grid framework enabling multiple designs, so that not every department has to have an identical design. There was some discussion regarding design elements of the prototype pages. Cal demonstrated how the new contact form will load faster, and uses inline messages rather than the older pop-up messages. He said that over time all the online forms would be redone and streamlined. He demonstrated the prototype for the home page, which features a revolving carousel slideshow and will showcase new photos to replace the current ones which are 7-10 years old. UNR has a similar carousel on their home page. Micah Kawamoto asked if SGA could send photos to use on the website. Kyle Dalpe replied that it would be possible. PIO is working on a system to encourage submissions of the "best of the best" since they don't wish to be inundated with poor quality photos, such as those taken from cell phones. Micah wanted to know if there was a timeline for the redesign. Cal said a timeline has not yet been firmly established; however, the current plan is to push out the redesign by fall. He said more will be announced as we move forward. Cal will follow up today's meeting with an email to committee members containing links to the prototype pages and will accept emailed feedback for a predetermined time period. Web Content Management System Cal reported that Terminal Four was selected as the CMS provider, using their proprietary "Site Manager" system. Chris Winslow reported that the purchase of this system has been approved by President Sheehan. The migration to the new system will happen seamlessly behind the scenes. Cal said we will push it out after the new website redesign, probably in late fall. Cal will be working closely with Kyle during the migration, and then slowly over time there will be training and more information about using the system available to faculty and staff. Other Business WebCam Replacement Status The new high definition WebCam has been installed on the roof of the Child Care Center, but is not yet working due to some IP connection problems. Cal said we are very close to being fully functional. PDF training and workshops on branded templates Training and workshops for how to create TMCC-branded documents for the web continue to be conducted by Cal and Beverly. Upcoming trainings will be held during Classified Symposium and Back to School. Google Sites templates Web Services is designing TMCC-branded templates for faculty members to use for their faculty web pages. This will give them more options than the limited Google templates that are currently available. WebCollege Brandy Scarnati gave a brief presentation of the Canvas system for WebCollege. She noted that they are still migrating and that for fall they will still be using both Angel and Canvas, but that in spring it will be just Canvas. Canvas works with all browsers and is more global than Angel. It also works with Google Docs and Google Calendar. She said that so far student feedback has been positive.
