Identity Minder allows administrators to assign attributes to employees and provide access to applications based on those attributes. The new version comes with functionality for relational databases, support for managing nested and dynamic groups, and a Web services interface. With the new interface, identity and access can be managed in a way that is transparent to the user, officials said. —Caron Carlson DESKTOPS Apple introduces skinny iMac APPLE COMPUTER LAST WEEK rolled out what it says is the The iMac packs all its system components behind the screen. “world’s thinnest desktop computer”—the iMac with a PowerPC G5 processor. The new iMac resembles a thicker version of Apple’s LCD Cinema Display series, with the entire computer, including the optical drive and power supply, built into a single case 2 inches deep. The system comes in three models. A low-end machine, priced at $1,299, includes a 17-inch screen and a 1.6GHz PowerPC G5 processor. The midtier system, priced at $1,499, runs at 1.8GHz, has a 600MHz front-side bus and includes a DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive. Both models come with an 80GB ATA hard drive. A high-end 20-inch version is identical to the midrange model except for a larger screen and a 160GB hard drive; it is priced at $1,899. The new iMacs will begin shipping this month. —eweek.com 2200AP is due later this month for $200. —Chris Gonsalves LAPTOPS Itronix GoBook III runs rugged ITRONIX THIS WEEK WILL INTRODUCE WI-FI D-Link AP features power over Ethernet D-LINK SYSTEMS THIS WEEK is unveiling a businessclass 802.11g access point that boasts new management and security features as well as POE for spots far from electrical outlets. The D-Link AirPremier Access Point DWL2200AP complies with 802.1x user-based authentication and supports WPA, AES encryption and the upcoming 802.11i security standard, said officials. The DWL-2200AP supports SNMP and includes D-Link’s D-View Network Management System software for real-time traffic monitoring. It operates in four modes: Access Point, for building WLANs; Wireless Repeater, to extend the range of existing WLANs by up to 50 percent; AP-to-AP Bridging, for joining two networks; and Point-toMultipoint Bridging, for connecting multiple networks.
