ABSTRACT: Membranes technology is widely applicable across a wide range of industries. The membrane is a positive barrier to rejected components; requires no extraneous chemicals, makes subsequent oil recovery easier. Ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes can be used in-many processes to allow recycling of selected waste streams within a plant, concentrates up to 40-70% oil and solids can be obtained. Since most oily wastes contain 0.1-1% oil, this means the volume of waste that has to be subsequently hauled away or treated is reduced to 1/40-1/200 the initial feed volume. The membrane equipment has a smaller foot print, energy costs are lower compared to thermal treatments, and the plant can be highly automated and does not require highly skilled operators [1].
