Class Size Increase (note: these courses recently went through CAP and were updated in all other aspects)
o
BIOL 100, 106, 190, 224
Discussion:
1.
CAP Chair Position
Incoming Faculty Senate Chair John Adlish will appoint Melanie Purdy to serve as CAP Chair through the fall
semester. CAP Chair Purdy is only eligible for one more year as chair and someone will have to take over. The
hope is that we can elect or appoint an individual in fall to take over in the spring 2016 semester. The new chair
will probably want to have some “training” on the system prior to taking over, however, these details need to be
worked out.
2.
Current Diversity Class Curricular Review
We clarified that our current diversity courses need to go through the full review process for the submission criteria
that we implemented three semesters ago. Last CAP meeting, we voted and approved the removal of the dictated
pages of written work which adjusted the submission criteria slightly. We are waiting for UNR to complete their
curricular review using their Silver Core Plan prior to doing our own review.
3.
Increasing Class Sizes
We discussed the clarification implications and impacts on faculty of having class sizes increased (see above
regarding courses that increased the class size via Associate Dean Deadmond’s office). Chair Purdy asked if faculty
are held accountable if class sizes are increased and what the impact on those teaching on-line is.
Jeffrey Metcalf from Admissions and Records reiterated that this number (in MCO’s and People Soft) is simply a
guideline and does not hold faculty as a contract. Dean Fruzetti, and others, identified that the Dean works with
department Chairs to figure out what is right for each faculty member. Faculty are to look to the NFA contract for
the contracted aspect of class size responsibilities.
4.
Human Relations Review Criteria
Because human relations is considered an additional requirement and not general education for the AAS degrees,
SLOA is not creating mapping criteria (which is for GE courses and will be the new guidelines). Dan Adams has
done some research on old human relations criteria, and has agreed to work with a small subcommittee to develop
guidelines that submitters and CAP reviewers can use to determine if a course meets the human relations

additional degree requirement. Further, the guidelines that the subcommittee will bring back to CAP will help
guide what should be represented for courses embedding this requirement into degrees.
5.
AA/AS Gen Ed - Fine Arts/Humanities/Social Science
During the review of the general education courses for humanities, it became apparent that we need to modify the
submission forms for the three areas listed above to include some guiding statement (a “mandatory” requirement)
that differentiates the three areas. For example, Chair Purdy indicated that as it is written, she could submit her
EPY 101 course as a gen ed AA/AS course in humanities using the communications and critical thinking objective
areas. The course is currently a human relations course, but under it is not clear if it would truly be a humanities
course based on best practices. As it is, there are no qualifiers to differentiate any of the areas, except under the
people and cultural awareness objective area, and not all submitters will choose this.
Tom Cardoza will meet with a wide pool of individuals in these disciplines and come back to CAP with some
recommendations on what we can add to strengthen clarity and help differentiate the areas. After discussion and
consensus, we will add the requirement to the appropriate GE submissions forms. Looking at the UNR Silver Core
might be a valuable too.
