Automotive ADVISORY BO ARD MEETING MINUTES March 25, 2010. The following persons were present: Scott Allen, Jim New, Dana Silva, Greg Nelson, Nevin Nyswonger, Cliff Bartl, and Barb Rummer. • Jim New called the meeting to order at 5:48 p.m. in EDSN 206. • Introductions of members. • Minutes approved as written. • Scott addressed consolidating Auto/Diesel Advisory Board Meetings to encourage more participation from members. • Dana handed out a Service Managers list for the area. Went over the list and knows most of the people on the list. Scott thanked Dana for getting the list together. Nevin mentioned that Mel Spencer has been at Reno Dodge for about a year. • Jim asked if we wanted to call a special meeting with service managers – will need to go out and visit and see if they will come. Instructors need to go out and visit managers. Dana mentioned we give an idea and benefit of why they should come to our meetings. Would like to see classes offered during the night, short classes, basic information. Not necessarily credits or degrees. Would like education versus credentials. Need to come up with common course that a group needs for existing employees to advance in the job. Need to talk about that at the first meeting. • Scott mentioned we don’t have a lot of classroom space to hold classes. Jim asked about how many people go through per session in emissions – maximum 12 per session for 1G, 2G is wide open, recert. is up to 40. Scott needs consistent classrooms to run the classes. Dana would like to have a 15 hour class that’s just on brakes or something like that. Basic engine tune up, suspension, electrical, etc. Scott says it would be nice to try that. Jim says we could do it during the summer – wide open in the summer. • Jim addressed putting resumes on the web – we had a placement coordinator that was working for us, but she took the buyout. Victim of the budget cuts, so we haven’t been able to do that. • Scott discussed alternative fuels – went to Vegas and went to a really good class – alternative fuels on basic hybrids. Covered all the different types. TMCC needs to address the hybrids – both auto and diesel. Dana mentioned that most of the dealers are doing their own training – they wouldn’t be sending their people to TMCC for that training. Advanced electronics class would be a better benefit TMCC. Dana said he will send newer stuff over as they can. • Jim mentioned there are grants out there – getting the money to get the equipment. Dana thinks you need to focus more on classroom work, wait on technology until prices come down. • Scott mentioned there has been a decline in the 2G class – lots of guys working out there right now in 2G. • Summer classes – only offering AUTO 101 – basic intro class in the evening. Is pre-req for all other NATEF classes. May offer another summer section if the first one fills up. We do need to start building more on our summer classes. Smog classes will be offered during the summer. Page 1 of 2; Automotive Advisory Board Meeting Minutes TMCC is an EEO/AA institution. See http://eeo.tmcc.edu for more information. Need at least 12 students to run a class – hydraulics class was canceled due to low enrollment. • PIO video status – just a matter of going out to service managers to do. Hasn’t been a number one priority. Would like to hear what service managers have to say and what they need in techs. Nevin needs to go out and do it – just hasn’t had time. He needs to sit down and have a list of questions so they can be prepared. • SkillsUSA – had regional auto a couple of weeks ago. Everyone from Elko, Battle Mountain, Douglas students, 8 or 9 high schools going down to State and a couple of TMCC students going down in April. Cliff explained the competition and who can compete. Dana asked what happens to those people. Nevin said they get hired up right away when then win. Cliff explained that his high school kids have gotten jobs – full ride scholarships. • Nevin went over the Dyno and how it’s coming together. Can measure gases, performance, fuel economy and emissions. Will do different things to it – learning tool for students – diesel and diesel emissions. • Jim announced Building Women on April 16, 7:30-12:30 on a Friday. Around 50 women and they show all the women around and what we do there. Trying to promote non-traditional careers. • Jim went over the budget concerns. All employees will take another pay cut. All budget cuts have not impacted classes in the past – will be a 5-10% cut in classes we teach. We need to start looking at any credit generating class that does not lead to a degree – we won’t be offering them. Could be some substantial cut backs coming up. Next academic year we’re okay. Entire college will take a hit. • Jim would like to get a group of service managers together for a special meeting. No meeting scheduled at this point. • Adjourned at 6:50 p.m. Minutes submitted by: Barb Rummer Page 2 of 2; Automotive Advisory Board Meeting Minutes TMCC is an EEO/AA institution.
