ThisdynamiccoursetakesacloserlookattheroleofjudicialreviewanditsimpactontheFirstAmendmentasit
explorestherelationshipbetweeninquiry-basedlearningandinnovative,research-basedclassroompracticesfor5th–
12thgradeeducators.ParticipantsinvestigateThePennLiteracyNetworkframeworksofTheFiveReadingWriting
TalkingProcessesandTheFourLensesofLearningandusetheminconjunctionwiththeNationalConstitutionCenter’s
engagingeducationresourcestofurtherexploretheinterpretationoftheFirstAmendmentanditsroleinschools.
Throughoutthecourse,educatorslearnavarietyofpracticalstrategiestoencouragestudentengagementusingrich,
standards-basedliteracypractices,withaparticularfocusonhowtheFirstAmendmenthasbeenshapedthroughout
theprocessofjudicialreview,examiningthebalancebetweenfreedomofexpressionandschoolresponsibility.
EducatorshavetheopportunitytotakeacloserlookatkeySupremeCourtcasesandlearnnewwaystoincorporate
themintotheclassroom.TheteachingandlearningfocusincludesemphasisonTheNationalConstitutionCenter’scivic
learningframeworkandfeaturesavarietyofclassroom-readyresources,includingvideos,lessonplans,andactivities.
Teachersengageinlearningexperiencesthatarerichinproblemsolving,criticalthinking,andlogicalreasoning.
PLNcourseactivitiesandassignmentsalignwithandsupportparticipants’potentialinvolvementinTheNational
ConstitutionCenter’sCivicLiteracyCurriculaPlanningContestwhichchallengespublicandindependentPennsylvania
teacherstodevelopmulti-yearplanstoimproveconstitutionalliteracy,withthechancetoearncashprizesto
