18th IAA Humans in Space Symposium (2011) Planetary Protection for EVA and Surface Operations Dean Eppler and TBD others 1 Johnson Space Center, Houston TX ABSTRACT Human missions beyond Earth orbit will access locations of concern for planetary protection, and therefore must accommodate planetary protection requirements. Planetary protection requirements are tailored based on the likelihood that the location to be explored might be hospitable to Earth life, or be of interest for scientific investigations into the origins of life in our solar system. Although early human missions will target locations not likely to host Earth life, such as asteroids, it is important to consider down-stream applicability to Mars when developing technologies for EVA and surface operations. 2263.pdf
