Training Services for Specific Industries
Continuing Education at Hunter College also offers
specialized translation and interpretation training
services that can be tailored to specific businesses
and industries. These programs are designed to assist
employees in providing translation and interpretation
services to colleagues, staff and customers. The programs
can be tailored to the special needs of the industry
and might include topics such as cultural awareness,
bilingual customer service, working with English-speaking
supervisors and subordinates, presentations and meeting
services, and reading and writing skills. Training programs
can be developed for industries, institutions, and
companies including:
Hospitals, Medical Service Organizations and Health
Care Workers
Social Service and Non-Profit Agencies
Government Agencies
Banking and Finance
Import and Export Services
Restaurant and Food Service

Translation and/or Interpretation Certificate
Program Description:
The Translation and Interpretation Studies Program prepares individuals
for positions in translation (writing) and interpretation (spoken) fields.
Students can obtain a Certificate in Translation Studies, a Certificate
in Interpretation Studies, or a Combined Certificate in Translation
and Interpretation Studies. In all cases, students must complete the
required course work with a minimum grade of “B.” Payment plans
are available.
Certificate Requirements:
Fluency in both English and Spanish and strong writing skills in
both languages are required. Students must take a placement test and
pass an oral interview. Tests are administered at our open houses.
Certificate in Translation Studies $3900
This is ideal for native or fluent Spanish speakers with strong English
language skills. There is an emerging market for translators in:
translation agencies, newspapers, magazines, law firms, the financial
industry, and publishing companies.

employment in legal and medical settings.

Students will receive instruction in both fields that can expand and
combine their work opportunities, including translation agencies,

Courses:
Introduction to Translation $650 (TSINTTRA)
In this course, students learn the basic skills needed to translate
texts, technique, resources and general challenges. The class covers:
legal translation, business and financial translation, translation for
advertisement, medical translation, and editing and proofreading
public service announcements. Course is conducted in Spanish.
Fundamentals of Interpretation $650 (TSFUNINT)
This class introduces students to the world of community
interpreting, specifically the different modes of interpreting in
different settings. Course is conducted in English and Spanish.
Translation Studies I $650 (TSTRAST1)
This course expands on the topics covered in Introduction to
Translation studies for a more in depth look at legal, business
and medical translation. The class also covers news translation
and literary translation. Course is conducted in Spanish.
Translation Studies II $650 (TSTRAST2)
Students work on a translation project dealing with one topic and
render a professional translation from English to Spanish. Topics may
include music, Spanish literature, or history. Course is conducted in
Spanish.
Interpretation in Medical Settings $650 (TSINTMED)
This course exposes the student to interpretation in a variety of
settings such as: hospitals, clinics, mental health, and psychiatric facilities. The courses includes consecutive interpretation, simultaneous
interpretation and sight translation. Course is conducted in English
and Spanish. Prerequisites: Introduction to Translation; Fundamentals of
Interpretation
Interpretation in Legal Setting $650 (TSINTLEG)
This course focuses on the court interpreter profession in the U.S.
The class covers court and legal terminology, as well as colloquial
language as it relates to the concepts that appear in courtrooms
and depositions. Issues that affect defendants or respondents with
limited English proficiency within the courtroom culture will also be
addressed. Course is conducted in English and Spanish. Prerequisites:
Introduction to Translation; Fundamentals of Interpretation
Electives:
English Composition & Editing $550 (TSENGEDC)
Writing an effective composition, article, research project - even an
email, is rarely easy. Most inexperienced writers repeat the same
idea, again and again, paragraph after paragraph.That’s why everyone
who is serious about writing, needs an editor, or needs to know how
to edit their own work. This course helps students improve their
written skills and offers editing techniques which teach them how
to help themselves. By the end of the course, your written work
will communicate more clearly, quickly and in a more interesting
way, to your readers.
Spanish Editing $550 (TSSPAED1)
Students learn the basic editing tools necessary such as editing and
proofreading symbols and electronic editing to edit text in Spanish
and translations. Course is conducted in Spanish.
Spanish Grammar Review $550 (TSSPAGRA)
This class will serve as a review of basic English grammar concepts
with emphasis on comprehension and text analysis. The course will
review basic grammar rules, the most common parts of speech,
tenses, and sentence structure. This course will enable students
to have a better understanding of Spanish as a source language for
translation and interpretation. Course is conducted in Spanish.
Note Taking for Interpreters $550 (TSNOTTAK)
This course emphasizes the importance of note-taking for
interpreters. Several techniques are reviewed so that students
develop their own practical method. Course is conducted in English
and Spanish.
Spanish Composition $550 (TSSPACOM)
The course emphasizes advanced written composition and
advanced vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Topics will include
grammatical matters such as punctuation, writing clearly, the art of
writing and different techniques. Course is conducted in Spanish.
