Not available this semester.
To encourage students to continue their law
education, either by preparing the student for
applying to and attending law school or for
developing a paralegal career.
Contracts (LSCONTRA)

To appreciate that students are self-motivated and
are investing both their time and resources to be in
the program; that they are already balancing both
a home life and a work life prior to entering the
program.The program does not seek to impose any
additional demands on the student such as costly
books over and above tuition or expending great
amounts of time outside of class.

• A student may drop a class only before the start of
the first meeting. A class may not be dropped after
the first class meeting has occurred. No refund will
be given.
• If for any reason a student does not complete a
class, the class will be treated as a failure. In this
case, the Retake Policy will apply.
• The Retake Policy allows a student to retake the
failed class free of charge within a period of one
year. This privilege can be exercised only ONCE for
the duration of the certificate program.
• If a student believes that his or her circumstances
warrant special consideration in the case of a
dropped or uncompleted class, please state the
reason in writing and send to Deputy Director
Cristian Gallardo, whose decision on the matter
will be final.

Legal Studies Certificate Program
Certificate Requirements
This program consists of 5 required courses all students
must take and 3 electives from the additional offerings.
Not all course offerings are available each semester.
Students will receive a grade based on either a final
project or final exam. Students are permitted one class
absence only, but lateness is not counted as an absence.
Registration and Tuition
Entire cost of certificate $3800 or you can register for
courses individually, plus $20.00 registration fee per
semester. Payment plans are also available.
Required Courses:
Introduction to Law $550 (LSINTLAW)
Provides students with an overview of law covering legal history,
foundations of legal authority, nature of a lawsuit, concept of
jurisdiction, legal terminology and basic concepts, structure of
the court system, a brief survey of the substantive law including
civil procedure, torts, contracts, corporations, criminal law and
real property.
Litigation $550 (LSLITIGA)
A continuation of Intro to Law, this course focuses on causes
of action, statutes of limitation, pleadings, provisional remedies,
discovery, EBTs, motions to dismiss, summary judgment,
settlement conferences, evidence, judicial discretion, judgments,
enforcement, and appeals.
Elective Courses:
Not every elective is offered every term. Usually there
are 3 electives offered per term. Courses may be added
or dropped from time to time. Please review the course
catalog per semester.
Torts $550 (LSTORT)
Torts are civil wrongs. The class will discuss the various kinds
of torts (assault, defamation, negligence, medical malpractice,
products liability, infliction of emotional distress, etc.) and the
elements which need to be proven: various features of the
CPLR which is the basic guidebook of civil actions in New York,
tort doctrines such as comparative negligence, res ipsa loquitor,
assumption of the risk.
Teaches practical skills for assisting lawyers in drafting basic
legal documents, including affidavits, complaints, motions, wills
and contracts. Students will learn the basic components of
these documents, where to find and how to use standard legal
forms, and fundamental principles of effective legal writing.
Contracts $550 (LSCONTRA)
Criminal Law $550 (LSCRILAW)
Contracts are an essential area of legal knowledge. You will study
contract formation, defenses to the existence of contracts, the
different kinds of contracts, contracts for the sale of land (real
property) and the Uniform Commercial Code which involves
contracts for the sale of goods in the United States.
Legal Research and Writing $550 (LSLEGRES)
Teaching students the fundamentals of legal research, kinds
of law books, casebooks and treatises, official vs unofficial
reporters, hands-on computer and library research, how to
shepardize cases, and the basics of writing a legal memo.

Business Law for Small Business Owners $550
(LSBLO)
This course is designed to familiarize students with the law
as it affects business personnel and social activities. A study
of basic legal principles and procedures including: the origin
and kinds of law; the law of contracts; sales; commercial paper;
and of agency and employment, will provide the student with
an understanding of the rights and duties of individuals and
businesses.
Drafting Legal Instruments $550 (LSDRALEG)

This course covers the kinds of misdemeanors and felonies,

Corporate Business Law $550 (LSCORBUS)
You will learn the difference between corporations and other
forms of business entities, how a corporation is formed, what
are the legal duties of shareholders and corporate officers, close
v. pubic corporations, what can be done to control corporate
wrongdoing, lawsuits against corporate entities.
