Cooks’
The Temple of the Winds 的外
Victor(home
的一道菜,Violet(home 媽)在旁邊問他,那老婆煮的菜呢?
例如 Bandar, Vega, Aziz, Paula, Take, Betrand。
Take
Deakin University Report
Chuang Chi Lin
As I was told the news that I could go abroad, I had mixed emotions. I
was excited and nervous to wait for the trip to Melbourne. I profoundly
appreciate I-Shou University to offer such a scarce chance for students
to study abroad. I gain a lot from experiencing all sorts of things.
In these weeks, we had diverse programs, of all the courses, the
debate impressed me the most. Kim, our teacher, separated all of the
students into two groups, then gave us different topics, they are “Driving
age should be raised from 18 to 21.” and “Smoking should be completely
banned.” respectively.
In my group, our topic was the latter and we agreed with the
discussion. We had to work together about the debate but doing different
things in limited time. Vega was in charge of the introduction, Paula and I
managed the debate, and Take was responsible for the conclusion.
About fifteen minutes later, the other group went first. They started
their presentation, offering their own opinions and then began the debate.
I tried to focus on what they said but I found that it was hard for me. On
account of being nervous, I hoped that I could have more time to prepare
and practice. I was totally distracted then.
Soon, they summed up to conclusion, which meant that it was our
turn. Actually, it was my first time to have a debate course, I was just so
excited. I had to listen carefully what the previous person said, taking
notes and quickly thought ideas to topple him. It was really tough for me.
Fortunately, with Paula’s help, I did it. What’s even surprising, Kim
acclaimed me and she said “ Very good.” certainly. Not only did I feel a
sense of achievement, but I was also grateful to my group members. With
our great effort, it was perfect that we completed the debate together. I
benefited a lot from this course and it was quite a precious experience
for me.
I made new friends from other countries, such as Japan, Korea,
Colombia, France, the Middle East, China and so on. One of my friends,
Aziz, is Kuwaiti. As I was told that it could be 60 degrees Celsius
maximum in summer in his country, I was startled and asked him twice to
make sure I did not hear wrong. I could not imagine it because it was
really unbelievable. I asked him” How can you stand it? Do you need a
parasol?” Surprising, he replied ”We don’t need parasols, we are used to
it.” Luckily, air conditioners are common in his country.
The second thing shocked me was the marriage. Boyfriends or
girlfriends are not allowed, there are only husbands and wives. I
wondered that how they could they choose the right and suitable partner
without getting along with each other. I could not wait for the answer.
Aziz said ”Parents also take part in the marriage. Parents and those
directly involved would observe and select the proper one.” How
amazing again!
There was also one thing which impressed me deeply. Aziz studied
mechanic engineering, this was not rare, something special to me was
his teacher. He told me his teacher was an American, not the local, which
meant he had to attend lectures in English. A frame came through my
mind. For engineering was a tough subject to study, even his teacher was
a foreigner, students in his country might be hard-working and splendid.
There were also various interesting things, the above were the three
most impressive ones. It was pleasant to understand and to share
different cultures with him.
On weekends, we had several excursions, including Phillip Island,
Puffing Billy and The Great Ocean Road. The photograph brings me back
many pleasant memories. The schedule says that we should depart from
campus at 9:45 am, it was much later than weekdays. Therefore, Trista,
my roommate, and I acted leisurely. In the twinkling of an eye, it was 9:15
am. We rushed to school and we were late by two minutes. I felt a little
disappointed at first but things got better. We arrived at Puffing Billy
station, which is a quiet and peaceful place. I felt lucky because that day
was a wonderful sunny day. I had mixed emotions when I got on the
steamed train. I felt joyful, smooth but I was also too impatient to wait.
The beautiful natural landscape was the most spectacular scenery I
have seen. For me, coniferous forest was only seen in pictures before. I
couldn’t believe my eyes that the forest was so majestic. I was immersed
in the view, embracing the azure sky, vast plains, the fresh air, animals
and all kinds of plants. Particularly, the massive coniferous forest not
only made me feel humans are littleness but also made me stand in awe
of nature. I realized some truth in life and benefited from nature. I really
enjoyed the excursion. What a lovely day!
Aside from excursions, I went to Fitzroy Garden, which is the first
garden I have visited in a foreign country and it is definitely the most
beautiful garden I have ever seen.
Entering the Conservatory, I stood at the door for seconds, being
fascinated by the vivid scenery. Colorful flowers healed my discomfort
and I totally turned to a vibrant person. It pained to me to bound to next
sight.
Cooks’ Cattage is a memorial to captain James Cook who discovered
the east coast of Australia. My friends and I had some interesting
costumes, including captain, woman and child. In addition, I saw the old
furniture and antique clothing the Cook family had used before. It
seemed that time turned to the past, experiencing the ancient times.
Next we visited Tudor Village. The lovely and impressive model
buildings attracted my eyes. The works were so adorable that I wanted to
shrink to go into the casts. I was told that the models were built in
appreciation of Melbourne’s generosity in sending food to Britain.
The Temple of the Winds was an elegant design. The white and
symmetrical pillars made me associates peace and grace with them. My
friends and I posed like dancers and took photos to memorize this
exquisite place.
Even though we did not look around the whole garden, I was satisfied
to feast my eyes upon the unforgettable masterpiece. What a gorgeous
day! I vowed that I will always remember the things of beauty distinctly.
With regard to my homestay, the members are home parents, their
two daughters and international students which include me. The home
family comes from Malaysia and all of them are Christians. One of the
international students comes from Japan. Kazuho, who is dressed in a
skirt, long socks and boots, looks like a typical Japanese. And the rest
are Trista and I. We are not only roommates but also in the same study
tour.
We’d got along with one another for one month. My home father,
Victor, speaks little, however I found that he is quite a humorous person.
Once, I had to ask him about his favorite food for homework. He
answered a Malaysian dish immediately. Violet, my home mom asked
him” Why not the wife’s food?” Victor replied frankly with smile” No, I
prefer the dish. All of us burst out laughing for a long while.
Concerning Violet, it goes without saying that she is a warm and
positive woman. Because of Violet, there is always laughter in our house.
Once she shared her embarrassing experience with us, it was really like a
comedy show. Everyone couldn’t stop laughing wildly. Furthermore, she
is clever with cooking so that I look forward to our dinner every day. Not
only can she cook delectable food, but she can also make tasty dessert. I
took lots of photos of various scrumptious food.
Since their two daughters are busy, we seldom chat together. In spite
of that, I feel they are easygoing and friendly. I think Kazuho, Trista and I
are lucky dogs to stay with such a harmonious family. I am extremely
grateful to have such a valuable gift!
I think I was right to choose to go to Deakin University this summer
vacation. In these weeks, with teachers’ encouragement and patience,
I’ve improved my speaking skill and listening. I am pleased to be taught
by Kim, Pattie, and Leena. All of them devoted spirit and introduction to
teaching us, I like them very much.
Moreover, I am happy to make friends with Bandar, Vega, Aziz, Paula,
Take, Betrand and so on. Bandar is as funny as a clown, as long as he
speaks, I will laugh and burst into tears. About Vega and Paula, even
though all of us speak in Chinese, our pronunciations and some words
we use are different. It is interesting to talk to them. Take and Chihiro are
typical Japanese. They are always polite and shy. Also, they have good
manners in class. There are still other friends and I will miss all of them.
Besides, I will always remember our bonzer excursions, the adorable
penguins and koalas, the imposing coniferous forests and the
magnificent coastal views. All of the superb memories will keep in my
mind forever. They are all valuable experiences.
I feel gratitude to I-Shou University to offer such a superb
opportunity for students to go abroad for a month. This trip enriches my
life and leads me to a brilliant future. Not only do I have more interest in
English, but I also realize that processing the ability of speaking English
is essential.

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY REPORT
Name: Shu-Ling,Yang
Student ID :9951016A
First of all,I was excited and happy about that I’ve won the scholarship, and
lucky to have the chance to go abroad. I chose Deakin University of Australia,
because Australia is an amazing place. To be honest, it is true that Melbourne
didn’t let me down. I also learned lots of special things in Melbourne. For
example, the transportation ,food, and the habit. It was very interesting for me
to get to know many cultures are different.
The first day we arrived at Melbourne, I found the sceneries was very
beautiful. The air was very fresh that I felt comfortable , and I can saw green
everywhere. It’s good for our health. Teacher Ellen picked us up in the airport,
we got all information on the bus, and I also took some pictures as the driver
drove on the burwood highway. After that, We arrived at Deakin University. Our
homestay were waiting for everyone. I was so nervous because I didn’t know
very much about my homestay. My hostdad introduced himself and their twins
sons, I felt happy instead of nervous when we start to chatting. My hostdad
which named Bol, he is from Thailand. He said he can cooks Asian food very
well, I felt he is very kind and sweet. His sons were lovely, they like to fight and
sing, so we had a great time before we went back home.
The first week for I-SHOU university was a closed program, so we didn’t
have formal class in the first week. Teacher took us to the city, went around
famous place in Melbourne, and introduced the Australia animals and food for
us. There is an another study tour which were Japanese, sometimes we had
the same tour, for example, we went to Phillip Island on the first Saturday
together, and also went to the Great Ocean Road on the third week. Japanese
students were friendly, I am still keep in touch with them.
There were some cultures differences between Melbourne and Taiwan. In
Melbourne, people usually eat toast for breakfast or some fruits . Unlike
Taiwan, we have lots of choice for our breakfast. Australian they have
sandwich for their lunch. There is another choice if you don’t like eat sandwich
for lunch, you can take the leftover from last night. It is convenient that when
you want to heat your food, you can use the microwave at the school. As for
the dinner, they will eat a lot, everyone will buy lots of food and materials
before they cook at night. Sometimes my homestay they like to invite their
friends to have dinner with us. After dinner, everyone will chat and have
dessert at the same time. It’s a special experience for me.
There is an interesting thing that I could not forget. In Australia, they have
draught for ten years before. They need to save water until today. In my
homestay, I can only take five minutes shower every day. After few days later, I
get used of it and enjoy saving water in here. I am also lucky that I can use the
heater whole day. While I was taking the shower, I can turn on the heater.
Besides, I have electric blanket in my bed, so I feel warm during I stay at home.
The weather in Australia is unpredictable, some of my friends they got a cold,
but the way I keep myself to be healthy is that I will drink warm water every
day.
My favorite place in Melbourne is Melbourne central. For instance, The state
of Library , Melbourne central station, Royal Park, Melbourne zoo and museum.
QV, Myer and David Jones department stores. And Swatson Street with all
different cuisine. I like to enjoy my time in the city. Besides. In this month, every
Saturday, Deakin University has arranged some fabulous excursion for us to
visit. The first weekend we went to Phillip island. At first, We went to a small
town near the Phillip island. We took some pictures and bought some
souvenirs before we arrived at Phillip island. Teacher also took us to a great
restaurant, we tried traditional Australian food there. Finally ,we arrived at the
Phillip island , it was windy but not freezing at all. We waited for the cute little
penguins up to the ashore. We had a great time in the Phillip island. On the
second Saturday, we went to Puffing Billy. It is an old stream train, which will
through the forest. It was freezing and the sad thing was we didn’t buy the
souvenirs, because we have not enough time. The special thing was that we
can put our leg out of the train while the train was riding. It was exciting that we
all had a fantastic experience. Then, we had lunch in the tearoom near the
train, we tried muffins and hot chocolate, also fish and chips included. On the
last Saturday, we went to the Great Ocean Road. I had been through poor
feeling when I arrived there. It was winding when we got there, not only me but
most of the students have travel sickness. Although it was really amazing
when we saw the twelve Apostles. Teacher also told us the sea had eroded
some of the rocks for many years, so there might be no twelve rocks there.
The view was spectacular and lots of the visitors. My favorite excursion was
Puffing Billy, I want to visit again next time and buy souvenirs.
In the school, I have made lots of friends from different countries, for
example, Columbia, Japan, Korea, China, Saudi Arabia , Vietnam and Hong
Kong. Every day we chatted with each other in English. Though it was hard to
understand the accent in the beginning, but day after day, I get used of it. I
learned from the teacher, you have to be brave when you start to talk to
someone in English. Soon I have made friends easily , not only in my class but
other classes. I’m glad to meet them in Deakin campus. In my class GE6, we
shared snacks every day, did homework and finished the project together. We
all had a great time. It was interesting that worked as a group with different
classmates from different countries. I also learned the different cultures on
them. We have to learned listening, speaking, reading, writing in the class. For
instance, practice to write the essay, improve our grammer skill and make a
project. Our project is radio program. We went to the radio station which was
on the Lygon street, we learned how to record a radio, and worked as a group,
each person have their topic and record in the radio. It’s interesting we have
met the radio station which called SYN, “Student Youth Network” .
In the study tour, I have improved my English skills. One month is too short
for me, I think I will go back to Melbourne again. I had so many memories with
everyone in Melbourne. I miss my hostdad and the twins. I miss my
classmates too, though I still contact with them on skype. English has become
my useful tool while I was in Australia and Vietnam. (We transferred the plane
in Vietnam) I had a wonderful experience that it may be hard to forget. Thank
to the I-SHOU university giving me this chance. I deeply appreciate that.

Tim Tam(超甜餅乾), Minties(薄荷糖), Twinties(超鹹餅乾),我們
除了正式課外,值得一提的是,ILC(independent learning centre),所謂
汽火車(Puffing Billy), 大洋路(The Great Ocean Road),其中我最喜歡的是,

Reflection
This was my first time to go to an English country and challenge such a
long-range flight. I felt uneasy before departing and could not relax on the whole
flight. My body and spirit were not relieved until arriving Melbourne. However, the
time I had stayed in Australia for one month was the most memorable time in my life,
because the experience here was so wonderful! There were three main reasons leading
me to think about it which were the warm homestay family, interesting and
professional courses in school and fun excursions.
My homestay family was Malaysian. Only home father, Victor, understood a
little Chinese including listening, speaking, reading and writing, really terrific.
However, of course we had communicated in English for the past one month.
Although the English they spoke was not so standard or clearly due to accent, I still
tried my best to suit the English with different accents. Because there are lots people
speak English with various accents worldwide, this was a good chance for me to train
my listening ability. When my friend Lucy and I arrived their home, our home mother,
Violet, explained carefully the pattern of the house, the way of using equipments, and
introduced us to another roommate. Wow! She was a very beautiful Japanese girl,
named kazuho. She had white skin and big eyes and was slender, with graceful
temperament, but extroverted. Violet and she loved to talk, so the next step was
endless chat!
Victor was friendly. One time, we went to school in hurry and the weather
outside was cold. Then he just sent us directly to school before going to work! It
really saved a lot of time and much convenient for us. Violet loved to share her
experience to us without feeling tired. We could eliminate the anxiety and
embarrassment among us in the short time; it all attributed to Violet’s talkative
personality. Besides, her cooking was awesome; we had not eaten the same food in
that one month. We eat not only western but eastern food. Western food or desserts are
fried chicken, French fries, German sausages, French bread, pumpkin soup, muffin,
sweet pies and so on. Eastern food was like our symbolic dessert in Taiwan, pineapple
cake. Although the flavor was still better in Taiwan, it was impressive that she could
make it! Glutinous rice, this one was even better in Taiwan, how amazing! Also
Preserved White Radish Omelette, Mapo Tofu, Brasied Eggplant in Garlic Sauce,
noodle made of ground rice and and so on, you did not heard wrong. Those are
typically Taiwanese food. Despite the taste was a little different, still tasty and
unforgettable!
They were Christian and went to bible classes. Every time, after Violet came
back from class, she could not stop telling us what she had learned today! Some
subjects were interesting It was also a good chance for us to learn English religion.
We would pray before every meal. I liked to listen to their praying, because the
context always prays for us, very touching!
Second part was courses in school. They were all designed interesting and
exquisite. I could take the classes in first week as example. When we learned how to
make advertisement, we could taste the Australian famous snacks first, like Tim Tam,
Minties, Twinties. Then we made brainstorming. We could draw a picture as our logo,
make a melody as our music and present it in front of class. I had not thought I could
be the advertisement designer one day. Therefore, when we did the good job, it was
really fulfilled. The most special thing was we can truly taste the snacks, not just did
the paper job.
Another example, teacher introduced us Australian animals. First of all, they
would let us listen to the description and we had to guess what animal it would be. If
we still could not get the correct answer, they would give us pictures and more details.
I liked this kind of teaching. When they gave us certain knowledge, they would not
just spoke, but let us think first. The knowledge would become much impressive
through the process of thinking. Much surprising thing was that we could really see
and touch most of animals we had learned on paper sheets in the following classes!
You knew actually we could learn this kind of knowledge easily from googling or
surfing on the internet. However, seeing or touching those animals in reality; this
opportunity was only provided in Australia! No one could have this chance unless
they were in this country, so it was the most unique part.
In one class, they even gave us the maps of city and told us where the most
popular tourist spots were. We found them out separately and circled them. Then it
was much convenient for us to plan the routes we wanted to go. It was special that
school could give us the enough information and even teach us how to play in
Melbourne.
Besides the formal courses, we had the ILC time. ILC was “Independent
Learning Center.” It was set due to the reason that school hoped we could study by
ourselves outside the class time. Therefore, we still could do lots of reading, listening,
grammar, chatting with English teacher, playing games or watching English movies at
this time. Without doubt it was my favorite time, because I loved to hide in a quiet
corner towards the sky and sun and read a book in peace and silence. Therefore, I
always cherish this time for self-learning.
The third part was group and private excursions. Group excursions were Phillip
Island, Puffing Billy and The Great Ocean Road. Each one is fantastic! We really saw
many beautiful types of scenery in Australia. I will never forget the broad sky and
land there. Among them, Phillip Island was my favorite one. People sometimes called
it Penguin Island, because we could see little penguins swing toward the beach from
the ocean in the evening around five or six o’clock. This kind of breed was special,
because penguins were small type and we could only see them in this island. If we
could not see clearly from the far distance, it was fine because we still could take a
closer look on the way back entrance. The distance which seems as long as we
squatted and could touch them! This was also the first time I heard what voice the
penguin pronounced. Dinner time, it was warm that Taiwanese, Japanese, our teachers
and kind bus driver ate together at a nice restaurant. What a satisfying day!
As private excursion, my friend and I went to many places like Federation
Square, St Paul’s Cathedral, Royal Arcade, China Town, Melbourne Central, Queen
Victoria Market, Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Museum, Melbourne Old Gaol, Crown
Casino, Aquarium, Fitzroy Garden and so forth. All were the memorable memory for
me. When we arrived safely at Queen Victoria Market with passerby’s direction, I not
only admire my ability of adventuring in a strange city, but also appreciate the
organized design of city. Their city design was really good, organized and clear.
Eevery road was straight and the street nameplates were everywhere and clear, so
tourists would definitely hard to get lost in this square city.
Among them, Melbourne Old Gaol and Aquarium were the last two spots I went
before going back to Taiwan. The moment when I stepped in the Gaol was shocked.
There placed some prisoner’s stories in every prison cell. Some motivations of
committing were aberrant, and some sentencing resulting from frame-up was pitiful.
It was a little uncomfortable for staying too long in Gaol, so it became delightful
when I went to the greensward beside the Gaol. I sit on a bench and enjoyed the
sunshine and my yummy lunch! As for the Aquarium, the super big and cute penguins
were the most valuable thing in it. Despite their size was big, that swinging movement
was really adorable. It made the panic from getting lost before arriving here become
nothing. No matter my friends said Gaol was too depressing and Aquarium was small
and the ticket was too expensive, I felt lucky that I still came here, or I would miss
some great experience!
Since the warm home stay family, interesting courses and beautiful scenery, the
time I stay here, Melbourne, Australia becomes my most memorable time in my life.
This month was my first time that I could listen and speak in English as much as I
could. It was really satisfying that I could stay in all English environment for such a
long time. Melbourne was very fun; I learned and played a lot. There were still lots of
places I had not visited. I thought this kind of chance which I could leisurely walk in a
foreign country without burden of family or work, only existed when I was young.
Therefore, I very cherish this opportunity of coming here. Also, it was the first time I
had the chance to meet so many international students! Thanks to have the chance to
make friends with them and teachers, also grateful for the chance’s provider, school,
or every beautiful thing here would not exist!

The Reflection of Study Tour
Before entered into I-Shou University, one day I found this scholarship of the study
tour when I surfed on the school website. For me, a girl whose family circumstances
isn’t well-off enough and has never been abroad, this full scholarship became my
goal at that moment. Maybe it’s a little bit pretense to say that I really appreciate
tremendously I-Shou for providing this kind of chance, but it’s true. If there were no
this scholarship, I couldn’t own such a wonderful and amazing experience in my life.
When I left for Australia, it was the intense heat of summer in Taiwan; but in
Australia, it was the winter. There’s almost no rain in the winter in my hometown
Kaohsiung, so when I stayed in Melbourne for few days, I just knew that a drench of
rain in the winter was so freezing! Local people said that Melbourne has a crazy
weather. When you got up in the early morning, it were only three to five degrees
centigrade. Until afternoon, it turned to a lovely, sunny, bright and beautiful day, so
you would hang out with friends after school then came home about 10 p.m. At the
moment you got off the tram, you would feel completely freezing and curse all the
filthy languages you could call to mind. Sometimes you would bump into a heavy rain
that dropped horizontally, and it was impossible to escape getting wet. This kind of
insane weather made me get cold for three weeks, but finally I still adapted to the
climate and lived better.
My friend named Autumn who majors in Applied English and I applied for live
together, fortunately we were assigned to a lovely and wonderful British family. My
home father, Gary, looked like George Clooney, so I usually called him “Gary Clooney”.
My home mother Emma looked like Julia Roberts, and their four children Patrick, Lily,
Joe, Leo were all good looking. They were all excellent and sweet, especially Joe, a
seven-year-old boy who was just like an angel with golden soul. He concerned about
us everyday and always shared his dessert to us. Same as home mother, Joe and Leo
said good-night and gave a kiss to us every night. Lily looked like Emma Watson who
portrayed Hermione Granger in Harry Potter series, and Lily was clever and confident
as Hermione. My homestay family supported a famous AFL team named Collingwood,
so this led me to sit with other 90000 people in the auditorium of the Melbourne
stadium on the last day I stayed in Australia. Gary even lent me Collingwood’s jersey
and scarf that he treasured so much, so that I could experience local enthusiasm
more.
My homestay house was big, two-story, with triangular roof and made by wood. Its
decoration was all perfect, warm, and lovely; just like a movie. Every day I thought
that I spent my holidays in a fairy tale, while I was having my hand-made hot coffee,
looking at beautiful sight and the sky out of the big French windows. My bedroom
was also like a girly dream, soft and colorful. My family made good food, and they
sometimes taught us to make simple food and dessert. We could freely use the
refrigerator, so we made our own breakfast every morning and felt very interesting.
We would put the supper last night into the lunch box and took it to the school to
microwave, all friends envied our bountiful and delicious meals, so we always shared
it with the others. The most happiest thing was that I could have coffee every day
because of Gary liked to drink it. I liked to drink hot black coffee, every night before I
went to bed I would have one with local well-known chocolate cookie “Tim Tam”. Of
course we had it with “Tim Tam Slam”, the local way to eat it. I still couldn’t forget
the feeling full of happiness and sweet, I wanted to eat it again so much! Emma liked
to eat vegetables, fruits, and yogurts, I liked it too! The day I stayed here, I had very
balanced and healthy diet. Besides, Gary and Emma were very enlightened and free,
so people who liked to go out for fun and adventure like me, as long as I informed
them beforehand, I could go home lately. Autumn and I always said that we
absolutely did many good things in the last life so that we could meet this kind of
homestay family. Perfect residence, food, atmosphere, and our family members were
kind to us so much. What a perfect family! The last day we were in Australia, they
gave us many gifts. The last moment before we left, I still deeply remembered it. The
sky was still dark, we got in the bus, Emma ran out of the house and came to hugged
us tightly. Her tears were around in her eyes, but she still smiled to us and gently
waved her hand, after saying good-bye she gave us kisses. Afterward when we had
taken on the airplane, we still cried.
Deakin University was great, there were comfortable learning environment and
kindly work team. The courses were not only courses, it also made us understand
Australian culture and local life more. One time the teacher brought three Australian
desserts to us and distributed us to three groups, we had to design advertisement for
one of the dessert after we tried it, including the slogan, icon, and jingles. This really
made me impressive a lot because of everyone’s idea were full of surprising and
interesting. Another time was animal lesson, we could truly see and touch the
Australian protozoan. Differed from Taiwanese education method, this kind of way
made us get more images and understanding. It was totally a different experience!
We were the same stage with Doshisha University from Japan, so we would be
together in some classes and tours which Deakin scheduled for us on the weekends.
It was really glad to meet and make friends with them. Until now we have come back
to our own country for few months, we still kept in touch with some of them even
sent postcards to each others. My classmates came from the whole word, through
the group discussion everyday we got to know the culture shock between all of us,
and continuously expanded new thinking. We had to write diaries in English everyday,
it was short but interesting and we could recall many things that happened on that
day. The Independent Learning Center time gave us space to talk with friends, play
table games, watch movies, or read novels. These all meticulously planned by Deakin
English language work team, making us live a substantial and happy life here. The
greatest service for me was that DUELI gave us a map of Melbourne downtown at the
beginning, through the lesson and discussion we knew most of the sightseeing spots.
The map and teachers told us where we must go and what food we must eat. Where
to see the beautiful natural views and go shopping? Where to enjoy local life and
night life? I was very proud of myself, because I went all of the spots on the map even
out of the map. I completed my own Melbourne traveling map, and I went more than
twice at some places that I particularly preferred. This definitely the most wonderful
experience for me, especially I liked to travel alone. Besides the elegant campus, the
library in Deakin were also good enough, and lots of students stayed here and they
were hardworking. Another places I usually went to was YMCA gym in the school, it
was good that I could exercise even in Australia. DUELI group provided us many
useful and interesting courses, cared about our homestay life, concerned our daily
life. Substantively, they also supplied wireless network adapter, cell phone and SIM
card, member qualification in one month of YMCA gym, and the most important one
was transportation monthly card “Myki”. As long as we took this card, no matter
trains, trams, or buses, we could take it without times limit and totally for free during
the month that we were in Melbourne. Thanks to Myki card, I could complete my
travel with minimum cost. Deakin group was really the best choice!
Melbourne was absolutely the best city to live in the whole world, and the
prosperous downtown was also with large green field, even in the Melbourne
shopping center there was artificial grass. What a comfortable city! I wouldn’t forget
every place I’ve been to, and I was glad to walk around every kind of places. No
matter downtown and fashion, shopping, park and lohas, enthusiastic beach,
fanaticism in the stadium, adventure in the country supermarket, afternoon tea and
chocolate in the laneway, freely sat on the grass beside road, located culture and
history, marvel of the street graffiti, river side and tall buildings, great night views and
pubs, I missed all of these. Every day I walked much and took many photos, those
touching, surprising, happy, and leisurely life were just like yesterday. We said it was
like a fool’s paradise, and Taiwan was the fact.
Melbourne, the Neverland that I’ll never forget. One day I will go back, and I really
believe in this.

(Melbourne
Centre)、2.
(Queen Victoria
Market)、6. (Duty Free)
(St. Paul Cathedral)、9. (St. Patrick
Cathedral)、10.
(Melbourne

【The overture of move on】:
I felt extremely happy when I saw my name on the list of study
tour because the chance to use the public expense to go abroad
for study and expend our view was very cherish. After school’s
illustration meeting, our group member of Deakin study tour set
up a corporation on Facebook so that we could use it to get to
know every group members and have discussions about the
study tour. Every day, I counted down the days with nervousness
for it was my first time to go to a foreign country after all.
【The prelude of arrival】:
After a chain of serious inspection for the incoming, we arrived
in Melbourne smoothly, but it was hard for us to get accustomed
to the cold weather there at first the moment. Then teacher Ellen
took us to the school and accompanied with us until the
homestay came to pick us. Watching our study tour members
one by one being took home, I felt a little bit sad since the thing
surrounded us were all unfamiliar to me and we were going to
meet new people and start our new life here. However, I told
myself that I came to Melbourne all the way here for the study
and the different experience and that I should keep in positive,
strong, independent and open my heart just have it a try to learn
as much as I could.
【The theme of the study tour】:
(1) In Deakin University:
(a) learning environment:During those learning days we
stayed in Deakin, we used a lot of learning source to improve
our English ability. In Deakin, they have ILC rooms that divided
into such as conversation room, self-study room, reading room
and multimedia room. Each of rooms have different purpose in
learning English. For example, for the conversation room, we
can play games with classmates and try to have more
conversation as much as possible. Furthermore, sometimes there
will be a teacher come in and guide us for conversations. In
addition, we can choose a movie we like then use the computer
to watch to learn English and based on the DVD has no Chinese
script this option; therefore, what we can see it’s all in English.
It’s really practical because you have no chance to see movies in
Chinese or hear Chinese. Besides, the multimedia room also
have a lot of English magazines as well as novels for us to
borrow for English learning. Every day, when it was ILC time,
we could choose what type of English learning we like then
learn. The most special part was they have YMCA gym! Anyone
who wants to exercise need to fill in applying forms then
dressed in exercise clothes and shoes are welcomed in.
(b) excursions:
In four weeks study tour, school had arranged many interesting
activities for us. At first week, they took us to the city for a short
introduction and took some photos and invited us to join the
animal education. We can have a closer look and touch with
Australia’s animal and learn some knowledge about them. Then
during the following three weeks, they took us to Philip Island
to see fairy penguins first. The fairy penguins were very cute
and when it’s about 18p.m., fairy penguins would appear and
work together so that they won’t be trapped by the other bigger
animals. It was a special experience to see penguins in such a
close distance outside with no glass blocked between us! The
third week, they took us to Buffing Billy to take steam train
which has almost 100 years’ history. Teacher Rose told us that
all the staffs there were all volunteers simply because they
wanted the 100-year-old train to keep traveling. We also went to
The Great Ocean Road to see a lot of beautiful beaches. We took
a lot of photos there; however, no proper pictures could
compared with the touching emotion while we were standing
there.
(c) New class:
After the first week to get familiar with the new learning
environment, we were divided into new class and started our
learning program. We had teacher Kristian on Monday to
Wednesday and teacher Peter on Thursday to Friday. Both
Kristian and Peter would like to put us into groups randomly to
practice our speaking; besides, it could let us get to know
different classmates in a short time since we had classmates
from Japan, Korea, Columbia, Vietnam, Hong kong and China.
As for school assignments, we have to write journal everyday
and to memorize some English vocabulary for words tests.
【The last part of the journey】:
The purpose for the study tour is to improve our English
abilities and during the study, I have found out that my speaking
actually get improvements. In Taiwan, unless you go to take the
English only courses or go to find a foreign teacher that speak in
English; otherwise, there’s little chances for us to practice
English speaking. It was an good experience for me to have the
chance to go overseas to have study tour. By doing so, I could
find out which part of English abilities I should strengthen.
Furthermore, the study tour actually save a lot of money for my
parents. Thanks to our school has such a good scholarship for
students to win for.

Tourism & Hospitality Management
Study Tour Program to Deakin University
I was one of international students who joined and got the
opportunity of this study tour program. This study tour program is
one of scholarship that is offered for every Taiwanese and
overseas Chinese students in I-Shou University with some
requirements that must be fulfilled and it runs every year during
our summer vacation. Moreover, the school provided everything
we need for those students who got this opportunity. I was so
interested when I heard about this study tour program from a friend
of mine who has joined this program in her second year. This
study tour program offers a great opportunity for student who love
to experience and explore other country. We were not only
improving our English ability in another country but also I learned a
lot things such as culture, the local food, got to know the local
people and also from any other country and experienced many
great places as well. So I went to Deakin University Melbourne
with other 10 students from school and lived in home-stay family. I
had no idea about what is living in a home-stay like, so that was a
new experience for most of us. Living with home-stay family was
fantastic! I really enjoyed every single moment living in home-stay
family. For me, it was as homey as my real home! My host, Ann
welcomed me by picking me up from Deakin University to her
house, introducing me about everything in her house and made
me a very delicious lasagna and it was the most delicious lasagna
I’ve ever had in my life! Not only that we made chocolate cake and
cookies as well, she is really a keen cook and I love cooking stuff
too so I felt so lucky to meet her. At that time I lived with another
home-stay student who was on a study tour program like me from
Japan. It was my first day there but I had learned lots of thing in a
day, what a wonderful experience! The other thing was that she
never told us to not to do this or that, instead she wanted us to feel
like at home. The second day was Sunday so I haven’t started the
school. So my host, Ann took Chihiro (my housemate) and I to the
city of Melbourne from the morning to evening
by the public
transportation so that we could learned how to get the public
transportation. We really had a great time and it was so tiring yet
lots of fun. She taught us a lot of things from the very first time we
met until we left the house and i really loved the way she treated
us!
So we had 4 weeks study tour program in Deakin University.
At the first week we were introduced all about Australia especially
in Melbourne and getting around some great places like a tour by
the university. I love every places in Melbourne I went and
everything was amazing. In fact, the local people there are really
nice and especially they love helping tourist even before we asked.
The Deakin University also provided us everything we need there
even more such as free cellphone with the sim card and some
money on it, internet usb, unlimited public transportation card,
accessibility in the university like the any other Deakin’s student
like gym, library, self-study room and so on and so forth! And the
last 3 weeks we had General English class with another students
from another country such as China, Colombia, France, Saudi
Arabia, and Kuwait. So we were mixed up in accordance with our
English ability. One class consists of about 10 to 15 students and
they have 8 class for General English level. It was an unforgettable
experience to having them in the class. What we did besides
learning English was sharing foods, the story of our own culture,
exchanged ideas and so on. The teacher who taught us always
helping us when we got problem in learning English.
Eventually, when we were about to leaving the university my
classmates and I spent some time went to the city as it was my
last day in the university. In three weeks I felt like I’ve knew them
for a long time. And also I had unforgettable moments with my
homestay. As in last I’d like to share some pictures!

First, I would like to appreciate school that provide a wonderful opportunity for
us to go abroad. For entering, we have to pass the exam of English and TQC. I studied
hard and finally I pass it.
Melbourne is the place that I have eagered to go , so I choose Deakin University.
For getting close to each other,we especially open the club in facebook and leave
information ourselves there .
Meet at the airport at first day, we were all nervous .Finally, we got on the plane
and off to the first stop-Vietnam.
Vietnam is located in south-east Asia. It is a country with many historic sites and
has a long history. To my first impression, only hot weather and heavy traffic. After a
long day go around the city Ho Chi Minh, I found out that there are many delicacy
here. I especially like "Vietnam rice noodles"and "spring rolls".
Second day, we finally arrived our destination, Australia. We were shouting
screaming "hello Melbourne".
My host family is Indian. They picked me up with big smile and passion. We get
close quickly and talk without difficult. I haven’t eaten Indian food before. But from
then on ,I can’t live without these food. Before I came, there are six people live here.
One Chinese, one Hong Kongness my host mom and her three daughters.
There is an accessible and reliable transportation system in Melb. You can get to
where you want by public transportation.
We have a 4 week courses in Deakin University.Deakin's Melbourne Burwood
Campus is located in the overlap of zone 1 and zone 2 of Melbourne's tram network. I took
tram to there for just 20 minutes.
After school , my friends and I would go to Melb city every day. There is a Information
center located near the Melb central . We asked where we want to go there, so don’t worry
about the way to everywhere.
Crown entertainment complex is a place that I want to recommend. Over 40
restaurants ,clubs and bars inside. Structure builds along Yarra River with a beautiful view.
We also went to the casino and win 40 AU dollars.
If you want to buy some souvenirs, Queen Victoria Market is your best choice. There are
not only lots of fresh food but also many cheep souvenirs there. I bought a T-shirt with there
and it just cost me 7AU dollars.
We have excursions every weekend except the first weekend. School took us to these 3
marvelous places Great Ocean Road, Puffing Billy and Phillip Island.
Puffing Billy is the railway lines built at the turn of the 20th century, and it is easy to
access.Phillip Island Nature Park is one of Australia's most popular wildlife attractions, the
Penguin Parade. There are lots of breathtaking huge stones in Great Ocean Road National
Parks.
We absolutely throughout Federation square on the way to central. It is one of the most
complex and ambitious construction projects ever undertaken in Australia. Many activities
were held in the great public square.
One day afternoon, my host mom taught us how to make cookies. Although my friends
and I false it. We still had a good time and made a wonderful memory.
Don’t forget one thing - shopping. There are so many department stores and shooping
centers in Melbourne. Cosmetics, shoes, clothes, technology and toys – all in one place.
Australia is one of the safest destinations in the world, so don’t worry about the public
security.
The night life in the Melb city is pretty colorful. Buskers showed their skills in the street.
Plenty of items exhibit in the store. Hanging out with friends and eating junk food at midnight
is really a specially experience to me, but also too dangerous .
Before we came back, we held a party and say good bye to my friend. It maybe was the
last time together. We talked lots of things, life ,family, and future. I forgot to bring
something special from Taiwan. But I had a great idea. I gave 10 NT dollars to be souvenirs
for them. Seeing the coin and remember me.
At the last day early morning, my host mom and I just hang each other with saying
nothing. I cried because I didn’t want to leave where I am familiar with. Then I know the
feeling when people leave.
During this one months, I not only improve my English , but also learn 1the different
culture and custom. The most important is that I made many friends from different country
all over the world. Now I have come back Taiwan for a long time. I still miss everything there.
Just like a dream. But I know ,it not just a dream.
Harbour Town
管是要送人還是自己留著都很適合,也很便宜;Museum 的花園也很漂亮;
English Report
Homestay
At beginning, I am expect of who my homestay is. Finally when I know they
are from Hong Kong, I am a little disappoint, but they are very kind to me. They
sometimes speak English and sometimes speak Chinese. I think it is positive,
because sometimes I don’t know how to speak in English, then I can speak
Chinese, it’s easier to understand.
They cook very very well. Especially, when I know some people’s house
mother didn’t cook well, I think I am very lucky that I can eat meat everyday.
There are a Hong Kong boy, a China man, and a Japan girl live there together.
Deakin
The first week, we had the class together. The feeling with each other is great.
On Friday, we went to Phillip Island. It was not cold at all, and we can see the
penguins mated. We also had city tour. Victoria Park is so beautiful that I want
to exercise in there.
The second week, we had the new class. There are many Japan people in my
class. They are all kind. A Korea girl, Jenny, taught us Korean.
We have ILC time every day, we can watch movies, use computers, and play
games. I usually play games because I can recognize many new friends. We
don’t have much homework except presentations and mad Monopoly.
Melbourne
When we arrived Melbourne, is only 9 degree. It was very cold! But after
about a week, I adapt the weather. On weekend, we usually went to city. There
are many shops. I recommend FOREVER NEW, it is Australia brand and not
expensive. The Vietnam Pho is very delicious!! And you have to try cold
chocolate in KOKO BLACK!!
We also had dinner in Hardware Ln.And went to little France street. There has
many breakfast shops. Melbourne Zoo has many animals in there but less koalas
and kangaroos. Harbour Town has the port. Chadstone Shopping Mall is very big.
You can explose many places which is cool.
School planed to go to some attractions on every Saturday. For example, we
went to Puffing Billy to take the old train, like Alishan Train in Taiwan. And Great
Ocean Road is very very magnificent!
I recommend some places: Queen Victoria Market, Museum’s Garden, around
riverbank, and Lygon St. You can buy many cheap souvenirs in Market. Around
riverbank, there are many bars and you can see night view there, is very
beautiful. And there are many Italian restaurants in Lygon St. The ice cream is
also yummy!
The Great Ocean Road ,

At the beginning, I feel very excited about that I get this chance to go to DEAKIN
university to study for one month because this is my first time to have a study tour. I
felt jealous to those who got the chance to go abroad before but now I feel very
honor. Thanks for my school-I SHOU university to give us this nice experience.
This time, we transfer the plane in Vietnam and waited for twelve hours, but our
school plans a tour for us in Vietnam. It was so nice and there are some strange
things that make me shock. The first one is their wires. It was very low and a lot of
wires in one bunch of it. Another one is their direction. Maybe they don’t have the
direction in their circle because everyone rides for the different directions. It let me
so scare that I don’t want to look outside. These are the two things that make me
shock and impress in Vietnam. We also tried the “three color ice ” in Vietnam. This is
a very famous kind of food in Vietnam. Thanks for our leader-Lynda because she
asked me to have this special ice at Vietnam with her. We also thanks for a husband
and wife. They are the same as us that they will go back to Melbourne. All of them
are Taiwanese but they have already lived in Melbourne for many years so they know
the rules at airport. Thanks for them to help us a lot of the rules that we don’t know.
After flying for about nine hours, we arrived at Melbourne. “Hello,
Melbourne!!!!! I am coming “. Ellen, the teacher who teaches in DEAKIN picked us
back to school and our host family had already waited for us at school. When I got on
the car I noticed that their driver sits on the right side. I didn’t notice this when I got
on the bus. At this moment, I feel very nervous and not accustomed to this different
country. However, I don’t miss Taiwan anymore. There are four people in my host
family. Simon, Cecilia, Andrea, James and I also have a Japanese roommate, Meg. I
felt very touching that I can have lunch with their family at the same table and they
chatted with me as their family member. In the afternoon, my host mom asked me to
go to a shopping mall, Forest Hill, near our home with her. Of course, I said “yes, I will
go with you”. It is so big that I can not remember the road. I felt a little scared in the
first night because all of us were picked by our host family after we arrived at DEAKIN.
The problem is that we can not contact with each other. We don’t have a mobile
there and somebody can not use internet there. The internet in Australia is very
expensive that we need to pay 10 Aus dollars per week. It makes me shock again but
I still pay for my host and used the internet to contact with my friends. On the second
day, my host mom asked Meg and I to go to church with them. This was my first time
to go to church. It made me feel touching that there are about one thousand people
sang songs and ate a little piece of cookie together. After singing the song, there was
a old woman who sits beside me she asked me” Is this your first time to join our? “.
1
“ yes” I replied. That made me feel warm because we are strangers and she talked to
me proactively. Then we went to the biggest shopping mall in Melbourne, and its
name is CHADSTONE. It was as big as five department stores combine together. The
most important thing that Meg and I need to learn here is how to go to DEAKIN so
Simon taught us how to go to school on the way home. To be sad that there is a little
far from my host to school, but it makes me feel excited to take the tram to go to
DEAKIN. This is my first time to take the tram as well.
13th Aug 2012, the first day that I went to DEAKIN university. Meg and I go to
school by ourselves and we forgot that the directions in Melbourne are different
from Taiwan. As a result, we went to the wrong side to wait for the tram. The tram in
Melbourne likes the metro in Taiwan but it works under the ground not on the road.
Then, I felt nervous when I arrived at the classroom because all of us need to be
separate to different class. I felt very happy that I joined the GE5B class and there are
many kinds of people in our class inclusive of Taiwanese, Chinese, Hong Kong people,
Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean and Colombians. All of them are treated me as their
family members. The teacher, Peter whom I like the most said that Iris is a funny girl.
I won’t forget that he told this to me. I still miss all of GE5B a lot until now. But the
worst was that I got lost in the first day, I forgot which tram stop I need to get off. I
take the tram to the last stop. I don’t know what could I do so that I asked a passerby
how to go to the Forest Hill. He is very happy to help me and he told me which stop I
need to get off. After walking for about one hour I arrived my host, I felt very happy
that I was brave enough to ask the strangers. There was some bad thing happened
after I arrived at my host for about ten minutes. Meg called back and said that she
also got lost. It made us nervous and we went out to find her. Congratulation, Meg
stood at the tram stop and didn’t know which road is our way back to our host. We
found her very easily. This was a very special experience for me because it let me
have to ask others courageously. In reality, I don’t feel scare when I got lost but I
don’t know the reason. There are two teachers in our class. The one is Kristian and
the other is Peter. All of them are so nice and taught me a lot of things. We have one
hour for ILC time every day. We can choose to go to the studying room,
communication room or video room. I like to go to communication room the most
because we can chat with classmates through playing games. Sometimes, we can talk
with teacher to improve our poor English speaking skill. There was a very funny class
that I enjoy in it. It was the animal class. Our school, DEAKIN, will invite an animal
professor who will bring so many kinds of Australia local animals. In this class, he will
introduce lot of different kinds of animals for us and some of the animals live in
Australia only. The most impress me was Dingo. It is a kind of fox but it looks like a
dog. Many people think that it is a dog but it is wrong. Even though I don’t like dog at
2
all but I think Dingo is so cute that I want to touch it. I also like the way that teacher
taught us in Australia. Kristian and Peter like teaching us through playing so they
often played games in the class, such as volleyball, magic show and so on. It was very
funny and it will prevent me to feel tired in the class. And it is more easier for us to
remember something through playing. Of course, we not only go to Melbourne for
study but also for broaden our horizons. After class, we like going to city or
somewhere to do something that can make us feel happy. DEAKIN also planned some
activities that we can go on Saturday. On the first weekend, we went to Phillip Island.
We went there to see the Penguins. They are only 50 centimeters high. However,
they are so cute. I felt sad that we can’t take pictures at the Phillip Island. We went to
Puffing Billy on the second weekend. This is my first time to take steam train. Teacher
Rose said that this train has been already one hundred years old and the people who
work at Puffing Billy are all the volunteers. We are so lucky this time because we saw
the pictures were taken at there last year. It was rained cats and dogs. We went to
The Great Ocean Road last weekend, the sceneries there are so beautiful that I only
can record by my eyes. This is the only one time that we went out with the Japanese
students so I cherish this trip a lot and I also took a lot of pictures with the Japanese.
Thanks for my university to give us this nice chance to go to Melbourne to have
a study tour. I am not only improve my English skills a lot but also made many kinds
of friends in the world. Last but not the least, I also broaden my horizons.
