身為一個土生土長的台灣人，二十年來不曾離鄉遠行，然而藉由著這次
學海獎學金的計畫，讓我能夠圓了這個從小到大的遊學夢，著實抱持著十分感念
的心。
歲月如梭，想當初剛進義守大學的時候仍然懵懵懂懂，雖曾聽聞學校有
各式各樣的獎助學金，卻只能遠觀不敢抱以過多期望，但隨著環境的磨練伴隨著
心智的成長，亦步亦趨的砥礪著自己必須不停的進步，然後終於皇天不負苦心人，
讓我申請到了學海獎學金。
對於一個完全沒有出國經驗的人來說，這趟遊學之旅在剛開始的時候真
的是非常的艱辛。從辦簽證，護照，一直到進出海關，轉機，還有無可避免的必
須與眾多外國人溝通，以及身兼小隊長一職，都是很大的挑戰，幸好副小隊長鄭
宜庭有豐富的出國經歷，與良好的英語溝通能力和危機處理能力，幫助團員順利
克服一次又一次的突發狀況。
說到行前的準備，我們需要在學校安排的日期備妥資料上台北辦簽證，
費用約為6000元台幣，須事前線上刷卡付款。面試當天，有的面試官是說英語，
有的是說中文，不過毋須過度緊張，面試官問什麼就回答什麼，不要多提及不相
干的事情，基本上都能順利取得簽證。
再來將行前手冊熟讀，準備好該帶的行李，以及生活費約１～２萬台幣
（預先換成美金），依本人自身的經歷，雖然學校支付了學費以及機票和部分生
活費，但是如果自己沒有額外帶生活費，可能是不足以度過四個禮拜的，不過若
是有緊急事故急需用大筆現金，學校倒是有提供緊急用金給小隊長＆副小隊長保
管。可以在出國前預先購買好 SKYPE 的點數，在國外只要有網路就可以使用電
腦或手機透過 SKYPE 打電話回台灣而不需負擔高額的電話費。
再來是過海關須知的事情，由於每間航空公司的規定不同，我們可以在
知道要搭乘哪間航空公司後，先行上網確認通關流程和行李限制的條件，避免程
序上的麻煩。詳細的資訊亦可從國際事務處，行前說明會或是旅行社取得。
經過重重關卡我們終於登機出發前往美國，途中會有轉機，整個過程耗
費將近一天，建議在出發前養足精神，避免在長途飛行與轉機，調時差的過程中
身體不適。可以在隨身行李中攜帶外套，避免在長途飛行中受寒。整個旅途過程
中，盡量不要讓行李離開自己的視線，如果貴重物品遭竊那會非常的麻煩。
抵達美國之後，我們嚐到了不少道地的美國食物，起初感覺非常新鮮，
但才過了僅僅兩天我就感到有些不適應，因為美國食物非常鹹，口味也很重，也
比較不容易買到熟悉的食物，例如茶葉類的飲料，或是生菜沙拉以外的蔬菜。長
達一個月吃不到熟悉的台灣味食物這對我來說是十分煎熬的，誠心建議在旅行中
攜帶一些台灣的食物（例如泡麵），也許有助消解鄉愁（？）
在前往ＳＩＵ之前，因為宿舍合約日期未到，我們還不能進駐宿舍，所
以學校安排我們在聖路易市的飯店待了三天左右，由我們安排三天的自助行程，
我們經由地鐵走訪聖路易市的數個景點。我發現美國有很多地方和台灣大大的不
同，人文與環境皆是，比如說呢，美國的夏天比台灣還要熱的多，大多時候是令
人不舒服的乾熱，建議自備防曬用品，許多美國人
愛用防曬用品，又喜好穿無袖衣物加上短褲，全身皮膚包含臉部暗沉長滿雀斑的
情形屢見不鮮，撐陽傘的情形在美國似乎也不多見，他們會覺得在大太陽下撐傘
遮陽的我們很新奇。
人文方面，我們遇見的美國人大部分都很熱情，且有禮貌。美國的駕駛
人對於行人非常的禮讓，會在離你很遠的地方就停下來讓你通行，這和台灣相比
實在是極大的反差，希望來台灣玩的美國朋友不要被台灣的兇蠻駕駛給嚇到才
好。
在我們即將從聖路易前往 Carbondale 的那天，我們遇見了帶團老師
Kristi，她在這四週無微不至的照顧我們與安排眾多行程，是這趟遊學完美成功
的最大功臣。在閒暇的時間，我們參訪了許多不同的景點，從聖路易市各大景點
走訪，還有美麗的酒莊，熱鬧的水上樂園，熱血的公園 Live band 演出，溪間
健行與水壩野餐，還有很多很多很棒的行程，讓我們留下難忘的回憶與珍貴的紀
念品＆照片。因為每ㄧ屆的行程可能有所不同，這邊就
詳加敘述，留點新鮮感也避免行程不同造成失望。
談談ＳＩＵ，在我們開始上課的第一天，學校會為我們安排正式的托福
考試，這個考試影響的是我們的分班，增進我們學習的效益，而且這個分數非常
有參考價值，雖然題目有些偏難，建議大家都要認真的作答，避免被大材小用，
有相當好的英語能力卻被分配到程度較差的班。如果覺得自己分配到的 level 太
高，無法良好吸收，可以申請自降 level 去適宜的班級，但是若考差了想要升上
去程度更高的 level，那希望就有些渺茫。
ＳＩＵ的老師在授課方面與台灣的授課方式有大大的不同。基本上ＳＩ
Ｕ的上課過程中，我們必須不停的說話，不管是與老師對話或者是永無止境的小
組討論＆報告，這讓我們的英語能力在高壓的環境中迅速的提升，也從中習得了
許多道地的美式日常用語，以及接觸到來自不同國家的同學的民俗風情。其次，
幾乎每ㄧ堂課每一天都會有作業或是小考，就像是時時刻刻督促我們不能鬆懈一
般，由此可見學校的用心。
談談宿舍＆學校周圍環境，宿舍方面，走的是比較簡單的風格，備有浴
室以及廚房和床鋪，家具方面則是熱心的美國老師提供給我們的。宿舍有提供
wifi，不過在安裝的過程中也許是碰上了一點小問題，終於在第三周順利啟用。
儘管如此，ＳＩＵ有提供電腦教室可供使用，所以也不需要擔心無法與外界聯絡。
學校的周圍有些餐廳，值得推薦的是美國道地的 pizza，個人是相當的
喜歡。學校裡面有條美食街，有美式餐廳＆中式餐廳，不過都很鹹，也有麥當勞
與星巴克，還有間書局。提到書局不得不說，雖然我們只在ＳＩＵ待一個月，我
們仍然需要購買課本，有些老師接受影本，有些則否。最貴的課本一本要價６０
餘塊美金，建議可以勇敢開口向高 level 的同學借他們已經用不到的課本,或是兩
至三人合買一本(若課程時間不衝突的話),可以減少不少開銷。
學校附近有個類似家樂福的量販店，叫做 Wal-Mart，它提供了我們下
廚所需要的絕大部分食材，以及各式各樣的生活用品，藥妝，家具等等。離學校
不遠，可以搭公車或計程車，不需要花很多的時間，Carbondale 的交通費也相
當便宜。
Wal-Mart 的附近還有一個 University mall，是個小型的購物商場，
東西還算平價。值得一提的是裡面有個電影院，我們有抽空去看了部電影，發現
電影票很平價，僅僅不到台幣200元，設備也相當不錯。美國人大概不像台灣人
那麼愛貪小便宜，買票後沒有人驗票，也沒有人監督你進了哪個廳，一切就憑良
心。美國的地鐵也是如此，買票後進出站不需通過任何機器驗票，也沒有見到任
何列車長驗票，和台灣相比十分有趣。
在經過一個月的美國學習之旅後，我覺得自己真的是獲益匪淺，更多的
見聞帶來了開闊的視野，豐富的經歷琢磨了我們勇往直前面對人生的勇氣。也許
一個月的時間不算長，但我想我會永遠記得那些珍貴的回憶。
As a native Taiwanese, I've no experience of study abroad and
I 've never leave my country. Xuehai scholarship plan makes my
dream come true, so I was able to study abroad .
Time gone very fast. The first time I entered I-Shou
University I knew few things because I was a freshman. I've heard
that the school has a variety of scholarships, but it still need a lot
of effort to make it come ture. Time trains my mind and then
finally I applied the scholarship successfully.
This trip is really difficult in the beginning. Visa, passport,
transit,...there are lots of things we've to deal with. We have to
communicate with many foreigners. It's was a great challenge, but
fortunately our team leader Zheng Yi ting has many experience of
study abroad and she also has good English communication skills
and crisis management skills, to help our group overcome
troubles again and again successfully.
When it comes to the preparation before the trip, we need to
go to Taipei to apply visa and it costs about $ 6,000 NT dollars. We
have to approve in advance online by credit card payment. The
interview in Taipei, some interviewer speak English, some speak
Chinese, but we don't need to be too nervous. Just answer the
questions that the interviewers ask and do not talk much about
irrelevant things and then we can obtain a visa successfully.
We also have to prepare our baggage and some living costs.
The cost of living is about 10000 to 20,000 Taiwan dollars (trans to
US dollars before we go to America), according to my own
experience, though the school paid tuition, the ticket of plane and
part of the cost of living, but it may not enough to spend for four
weeks. If there is an emergency and need cash, the school offered
the emergency payments to team leader already. To purchase the
points of Skype before leaving Taiwan and then you can call back
to Taiwan through the network by the computer or mobile phone
via SKYPE without paying high phone bills.
Due to the provisions of each airline is different, after we know
which airlines we have chosen, we can check the clearance
process conditions and luggage restrictions to avoid trouble on
the program in advance by the Internet. The detail information are
available from the Office of International Affairs or travel agent.
After a series processes, we finally boarding departure to
the United States. The whole process took nearly one day, it is
recommended that revitalized before departure, to avoid
discomfort, adjust the time difference in the long-haul flight and
transit. The coat can be carried in carry-on baggage, avoid
exposure to cold in a long-haul flight. The entire journey, keep
your bag in your sight. If valuables stolen by the thief that would
be a big trouble.
After we arrived the United States, we tasted a lot of authentic
American food, at first we felt very fresh, but only after just two
days I am not suited to some American food because it is very
salty and the taste is also very heavy. It's difficult to buy familiar
Taiwan foods, such as vegetables and some tea drinks. There are
less familiar taste food for us for a month. It's hard to tolerate .I
advice those who are going to travel America should carry some
familiar Taiwan food (such as instant noodles), and perhaps help
digestion nostalgia (?)
For SIU, because the date of the dormitories contract have
not reach yet, we can not be stationed in quarters, so the school
arranged for us to be in St. Louis City Hotel about three days,
arranged by our three-day buffet trip, we visited St. Louis City via
subway and lots of attractions. I found that the United States there
are many places and greatly Humanities and the environment are
instance, the United States in the summer is more hot than in
Taiwan. Usually it's uncomfortable dry heat, it is recommended to
bring their own sunscreen Many Americans
do not like to use sunscreen, and preferences to wear sleeveless
clothing plus shorts, body skin contains the face dull freckled
situation not uncommon, hold parasols situation is rare in the
United States seems to have, they will feel the sun umbrella shade
the very novel.
Humanities, most of the Americans we met were very kind
and courteous. American friends are not driving for pedestrians,
very courteous. They will let you pass the road and stop away in a
long distance. In contrast, Taiwan drivers are very rude. I hope the
foreigners won't get scared by Taiwan drivers.
The day we went to Carbondale from St. Louis, we met many
tour teacher Kristi, she took good care of us in this four weeks .She
arranged many stroke. She made this month perfect. In our leisure
time, we visit many different attractions, visited from St. Louis, the
city's major attractions, there are beautiful wineries, lively
waterpark blood park Live band performances, hiking in the river
between the dam picnic, but also There are a lot of great itinerary,
let us unforgettable memories and precious souvenirs & photos.
Because stroke of each ㄧ session may vary side. Detailed

Let's talk about the SIU, we begin the first day of class, the
school will arranged for our official TOEFL this the exam affect our
placement, to enhance the effectiveness of our learning and the
reference value and scores, although the subject some were too
difficult, we all have to answer to avoid overkill, fairly good English
skills but was assigned to the extent of poor classes. If you feel
that is assigned to their own level is not too high, good absorption,
can apply from the lower level to the appropriate class, but if the
test differential want ascending to a higher degree of level that is
a little difficult.
SIU teacher in teaching and teaching methods in Taiwan
greatly different. Basically, the SIU during class, we must stop
talking, whether it is in dialogue with the teacher or endless panel
discussions & reports, which makes English the ability to upgrade
quickly in the high-pressure environment, but also to learn the the
authentic American everyday language, as well as access to
students from different countries customs. Second, almost every
ㄧ lesson each day will have a job or quiz like is constantly urge us
not be relaxed in general, we can see that the intentions of the
school.
Talk about the dormitory & around the school environment,
dormitory, taking the simple style, equipped with bathrooms and
a kitchen and beds, the furniture is enthusiastic teacher available
to us. Quarters have provided wifi, but the installation process
may run into a little problem, finally enabled in third Zhoushun Li.
Nevertheless, SIU provides computer classroom available, so I do
not need to worry about can not contact with the outside world.
Some restaurants around school, worth recommending
authentic pizza, the individual is like. School inside a food court,
American Restaurant & Chinese restaurant, but very salty,
McDonald's and Starbucks, as well as between the bookstore.
Mentioned bookstores have to say, although we only SIU to be a
month, we still need to purchase textbooks, some teachers accept
photocopies, some are not. An asking price of the most expensive
books to more than 60 U.S. dollars, it is recommended by the
textbooks they have less than a high-level students can brave
opening, or two to three together to buy a (if the course of time
that does not conflict) can reduce a lot of overhead.
Like Carrefour hypermarket near the school, called Wal-Mart,
it provided we cook most of the ingredients, as well as all kinds of
daily necessities, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, furniture and so
on. Far from the school, you can take a bus or taxi, do not need to
spend a lot of time, Carbondale transportation costs are
reasonably cheap.
Wal-Mart near a University, mall, a small shopping mall,
something fairly cheap. It is worth mentioning that there is a
movie theater, we have time to see the movie, and movie tickets
are very cheap, just less than NT $ 200 million, the device is also
quite good. The Americans probably Unlike Taiwanese so in love
because they are cheap, buy a ticket after recount, and no one to
supervise you into which office, everything in good conscience.
U.S. subway, too, out of the station after buy tickets without going
through any machine recount, did not see any conductor recount,
and Taiwan is very interesting.
After a month's American journey of learning, I really got a
lot of benefits from more knowledge to bring a broad perspective,
rich experience pondering our courage courage to face life.
Maybe a month's time is not so long, but I think I will always
remember those precious memories.

很久以前，對美國就有非常大的嚮往，美國影集、電影等都構成了很棒的美國夢，
一開始到那裡真的有一點點失望，跟想像中的有落差，不過畢竟人生跟電影本來
就不一樣，所以順其自然就好，最後超級捨不得離開那裡，雖然只有短短一個月，
帶給我們的是卻是很棒、很美好、又很充實的回憶。
行前工作
出發之前，其實行前工作不多，只是要當小隊長和副小隊長的人英文最好不要太
差，或是曾經有出過國，大概知道搭機的一些情況，因為沒有帶團老師，所以幾
乎都是小隊長和副小隊長去應付可能會發生各種不一樣的突發狀況，例如：飛機
誤點，或是有人行李有問題，尤其是在洛杉磯轉機的時候麻煩最多，要把托運行
李取出來，再 check-in 進去一次，中間就會花掉很多時間，托運行李通常限制
只能帶 20 公斤，但是看海關的心情，有時候超過一些是不會罰錢的，所以知道
是哪間航空公司的時候，就可以先上網看一下他們的規定，去的時候只能帶一個
托運行李，帶上飛機的只能一個包包或是登機箱，再加上電腦包，拿兩個包的話
海關可能會叫你硬塞成一個包，登機的行李最好不要放太雜亂的東西，還有穿輕
便鞋子和衣服，過安全檢查的時候會要求脫鞋，還有把皮帶抽掉外套脫掉，簡單
的登機裝備比較不會有太大的問題，最重要的是不要慌張。
簽證
這部分學校和旅行社基本上都會幫大家處理好，只要按照規定的時間內繳交需要
的文件，如果是辦 I-20 學生簽，還要上網登入一些自己的資料和用信用卡自費
繳交兩百美金的手續費，郵局的 VISA 金融卡不適用線上刷卡，再來把資料印下
來，辦簽證需要用到，財力證明到郵局或是銀行申請英文版財力證明，裡面的金
額大概台幣十萬塊左右，之後學校會選一天幫大家請公假上台北美國在台協會面
試，面試要排很長的隊伍，因為近年來辦美簽的人數真的很多，如果有改過名字
的人最好把自己以前名字的英文拼音也記下來，辦美簽的時候可能會被要求填寫
以前的舊名，面試官有些很刁難，只能靠運氣，如果英文口語不好，最好是開頭
的時候是用中文說”你好”，如果用英文跟他打招呼，接下來面試官可能就會一
直跟你講英文，面試的時候不要多講面試官沒有問你的問題，話多容易出錯，面
試官的問題大概就是問要去美國做什麼、要去多久、住哪裡、錢是不是學校付等，
面試完副隊長要收集大家的資料，在出口填寫一些學校或旅行社的通訊資料，之
後大家的護照簽證會用包裹的方式寄送。
到達美國
依照上一屆的例子應該是要有 SIU 的老師來接機，但是剛好我們到的日子離開始
上課還有四天的空檔，所以沒有老師來接，我們待在聖路易待將近四天，到達機
場已經接近十二點，尋找機場電話，撥了飯店的電話，飯店派出接駁車，我們就
在飯店待了四天三夜，開始這四天真的是我們的適應期，美國的東西真的很鹹，
尤其是飯店的熱狗吃起來像是直接在吃鹽，天氣就像是在烤人一樣，比高雄還熱，
偏偏美國就是地廣，沒有公車和地鐵到的地方，靠的就是雙腿，我們逛了聖路易
的大地標，幾乎有一半的行程都是在逛街，聖路易有一間非常大的商場 Galleria
就當了一天的行程，去逛街還順便讓我們學到一個教訓，不要跟看起來沒事做的
人講話！因為不清楚 Galleria 在哪裡，隨便問了路人，那位路人老先生說可以帶
我們去，到了 Galleria，老先生居然說他餓了，接下來就跟我們討錢，因為在那
之前，機場問路時，裡面的人都很好心無所求的帶我們到要找的地方，卻沒想到，
來到美國的第二天就讓我們對這邊的人留下壞印象，但是之後發現那是特例，後
來我們遇到的人都很善良人也很好。
出發去 Carbondale
一開始學校老師給我們的信件影本上面有寫，帶團老師 Kristi 將會在星期日早上
十點在旅館大廳等我們出發去 Carbondale，那天我們等 Kristi 等了將近一個小
時，原來是要接我們的 SIU 巴士後車廂打不開，Kristi 搞了很久才出發，後來我
們的行李都塞在前面的空位，幾乎每次老師帶我們出去，都是坐這大約 12 人座
的巴士，上了車沒多久，大家就累的睡著了，我們時差還是在台灣，出發去
Carbondale 的路上一直經過麥當勞，在 St. Louis 的這幾天，大家都瘋狂的想要
吃麥當勞，我們常看到路上有廣告，卻一直找不到店家，可能是看到 M 字特別
有親切感，殊不知開始上課之後就會吃到膩了，經過了鄉村野路終於到達
Carbondale。
宿舍
我們這屆跟別屆不一樣的還有住的地方，我們是住在外面的公寓，男生女生分成
兩層，男生住一樓，女生住三樓，各有三間房，兩間雙人房一間單人房，滿懷期
待的打開公寓的門，發現除了廚房設備和三間房間都有床之外，其他什麼都沒有，
也沒有書桌，單人房連個燈都沒有，網路更是沒有，美國的公寓出租不像台灣，
台灣家俱房東都會提供，這裡要自己想辦法，還要壓一百美金的押金，好險這裡
的老師都人很好的，第一天就借我們檯燈，不然我整個月晚上都會在黑暗中度過，
第二天第三天陸續出現了一些桌子椅子，我們從坐在地板上慢慢變成坐在椅子上，
將近第三個星期我們才終於有網路！住公寓的好處是，大家感情都很好，還可以
一起煮飯一起吃，一起辦桌請外國人來家裡吃飯。
購物
來到 Carbondale 第二件事情就是趕緊去採購生活用品，我們去了 Wal-Mart，
跟台灣的家樂福或是大潤發很像，我們買了一些食物還有調味料，還有搬了一箱
礦泉水，雖然美國的水打開可以直接喝，可是喝多了對身體不好，可以買濾水器
或者乾脆買礦泉水，價格也不會特別貴，Wal-Mart 的東西是出了名的便宜，裡
面包含生鮮食品、雜貨、家俱及藥妝都有。Wal-Mart 附近還有一間 University
mall，裡面有很多店家，跟台灣的購物中心差不多，可以買到有牌子和便宜又好
看的衣服。
學校
來到 Carbondale 的第二天，Kristi 一大早就帶我們走路去學校，大概走了 20
分鐘才到，第一天就迎接了困難重重的托福分班考試，早上考了三小時聽力文法
閱讀，下午還有寫作，考完之後我們就自己去逛，SIU 整個大學太大了，我們只
有逛平常會走動的地方-學生活動中心，裡面有星巴客、麥當勞、書局、中國餐
館、保齡球場、墨西哥餐廳等，活動中心另外一個出口有巴士站。隔天，依照托
福成績大家拿到課表，SIUC 總共有七個 Level，第一個星期我待在 Level5，班
上只有我一個台灣人，其他包括巴西人、阿拉伯人、韓國人、日本人、中國人、
還有講西班牙文的不知道是哪裡人，上課時間都跟別人不一樣，星期五沒課，每
個人都是為了要上 SIU 大學，Level5 上的內容都是偏向學術性的東西，上午是
寫作課，下午是討論完還是要寫下來的寫作課，後來學校老師說我可以換班，鬆
了一口氣的換去 Level4，班上幾乎都是阿拉伯人，每天都有聽說讀寫，阿拉伯
人會搶著回答問題，所以跟著搶就對了！一個月課程結束後，會有一個小典禮，
在典禮上大家會收到結業證書和站起來發表心得等。
Tips
1. 搭乘計程車很便宜，在大賣場或是購物中心裡面服務台都有幫忙叫車這個服
務，也可以跟他們要電話，之後需要的時候直接用手機撥打。
2. 搭公車學生只要付 1 美金，可是公車只有單方向行駛，如果要回到同樣地方
要繞一大圈。
3. 不要蹺課，因為老師都會在心裡默默點名。
Cheng, I-Ting
I have a great desire like most people to travel the world. Due to the
objective, I’d like to study hard for my future trip. The year before last, I went
aboard with my scholarship to the capital city of Belgium for studying the
college and stayed in European for half year. It was a long dream for me.
During that time, I had been to France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands,
Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Sweden, etc. I spent my leisure time to every
countries for a short tour. After that, I really wanted to go to America seeing
what the different between European and America. Fortunately, I got the
scholarship from ISU, and started the adventure to the US.
I have watched the series of America for a long time. Before going to
the USA, I was looking forward to live in the US. Movie, series and music
made a great American dream for me. The beginning of my American life had
been a little disappointing me. I had a dream out of the world. However, the
reality and the dream are different. Let nature take its course. In the end of this
month, we really didn’t want to leave there. Even though there was only a
month, the memories keep in our mind deeply. We had a great, beautiful,
wonderful and very fulfilling experience.
Visa
It’s a complex one because we ought to prepare some documents, but
basically the school and travel agency would help us to deal with it. We just
need to get the financial statement, online paying $200 and printing I-20. After
getting all, we went to Taipei for the interview from the American Institute in
Taiwan. The interviewer might be Taiwanese or American. Sometimes, they
could speak both English and Chinese and ask basic questions. Don’t say
other things that the interviewer haven’t question you. The more you speak,
the more mistakes you make.
Before departure
Before departure there are few works. The team leader and the vice leader
had better be good at English, or had go aboard experience because there
wouldn’t have been a teacher to lead us abroad the plane, and we should do
everything by ourselves. Therefore, we have to deal with a variety of
unexpected situations that may occur, such as: the plane was delayed, or
someone had luggage problems, especially change plan in Los Angeles may
have some problems, we should take out our baggage, and then check-in, this
action will spend a lot of time. There is a rule for checked baggage which
restricts 20kg, but sometime depend the mood of the Customs that they
maybe allow you that have more baggage or the weights without fine or pay,
so as we know which Aviation company you are going to take plan, look at the
website and you will get lots of information about the checked baggage and on
board package. Usually on board package should be one, and also you could
take another computer bag, if you take two packages, the Customs may call
you cram into a package, check-in luggage is best not to put too messy things,
as well as wear lightweight shoes and clothes, when the security check will be
asked to take off your shoes, belt should take off. Taking simple stuff boarding
will not occur much of problem, the most important thing is not to be too
nervours.
Arrival in the US
At the very start, we stayed in St. Louis nearly 4 days. SIU teacher booked the
hotel for us. We visited amount of the hot spot there. We took the shuttle bus to
airport, transferred metro, and then we walked a lot to everywhere also went
shopping. The weather in St. Louis is hotter than in Kaohsiung, but we didn’t
sweat a lot. We were not used the food and the weather here. The food was
too salty for us.
Departure to Carbondale
ISU teacher gave us a photocopy of a letter saying there was a led teacher
Kristi would be ten o'clock on Sunday morning in the hotel lobby. She was
going to pick us to Carbondale. We set out everything and waited Kristi nearly
an hour that day because our school bus had some problems. Finally, we were
on the school bus, and everyone tired and fall asleep cause of our jet lag.
The way to Carbondale we saw many ads of McDonald's which we looked for
long time in St. Louis these days. Everyone wanted to eat McDonald's, we
often saw ads on the road, but could not find a real store. We didn’t expect that
one day we were tired of eating McDonald’s. After lots of rural roads, we
reached Carbondale.
Habitation
This time, we lived in an apartment outside, and boys and girls divided into two
layers, the boys live on the first floor, the girls lived on the third floor, each with
three rooms, two double rooms and one single room. When we arrived with
full-expectation and opened the door of our apartment, we saw an empty
apartment which we didn’t expect. There is only kitchen equipment and five
beds in the room with air-conditioner, no desk or other furniture. The two single
rooms didn’t have light. The United States apartments for Rent are unlike
Taiwan, on usual Taiwan landlord will provide some furniture. We had paid a
deposit of one hundred dollars. Luckily the teachers were nice to us. The first
day, they lend us two lamp and microwave oven. I was so glad that I didn’t
pass whole month in the dark because I slept in the single room. After few day,
there has been found tables and chairs in our apartment. Originally we sat on
the floor, and then became sitting on a chair. Nearly the third week, we finally
have internet! The advantage of living in an apartment, we could cook together
and eat together. We also asked foreigners to our apartment and cooked
dinner for them.
Shopping
The second thing in Carbondale was rush to buy daily necessities. Our leading
teacher Kristi drove us to Wal-Mart which was a big market, and we could buy
everything in it like Carrefour in Taiwan. We bought some food, seasonings,
and a box of mineral water. Although the water of the United States, you could
open the faucet and directly drink it, but drinking too much this kind of water
was not good for the health, you can buy a water filter or just buy mineral water,
the price was not particularly expensive. Wal-Mart is known for their cheap
production, such like fresh food, groceries, furniture, cosmetics and
pharmaceuticals. Near Wal-Mart, there was a University Mall which contained
amount of stores, and also a movie theater with a low price ticket. It was a
shopping center. We could buy much brand stuff with good price.
School
The second day in Carbondale, Kristi took us walking to school 20 minutes in
the early morning, and we had a big test “TOEFL” which could help us
identifying which level and class we were in. Level 7 is the greatest one. There
were listening, grammar, reading and writing. We all had 4 hours hard time.
When we finished the test, we went around the entire CESL where we were
going to study for a month. There are McDonald, Starbucks, Chinese
restaurant, other restaurant, bookstore and Bowling in the Student Center. We
almost ate lunch there in whole month. Behind the Student Center, we could
fine the bus stop. The next day, we all got our own schedule. We had different
time and class to make sure that we were not in the same class, and we could
learn better and speak more English in class. The fist week, I stayed in the
level 5, I was the only one Taiwanese. Every day we wrote 2 paragraphs, and it
was kind of boring. The next week, I changed to the level 4 with Jimmy. I was
so fulfilled of joining this class. I met lots of Arabian people, a Japanese and a
Brazilian. We discussed and enjoying the activity in class. I admired that
Arabian people never felt shy to answer question and raised question although
they always made a lot of mistakes. After a month, we got a small graduation
and received a certificate of completion, and then we stood up giving out our
reflections about the school or everything.
Tips
1. It’s cheap to take a taxi or cab. The information desk of supermarket or
shopping center could help you calling to get a ride of cab and taxi. If you
need the number of cab, ask them. Next time you could directly call by
yourself with cell phone or telephone booth, if there isn’t am information
desk.
2. Students take the bus for only one dollar with your student card. There is
only single way. So you want to return to same place, you should take a big
circle around.
3. Do not skip class, because the teachers always know if you are not in
class.
2012 學海遊學 美國南伊利諾大學團 中文心得報告

能夠藉著學校的獎學金出國遊學,是我無法想像的事情.這一切對我而言,就
像做了一個很美的夢.一開始報名了學海,每天努力的勤讀英文,一心就是想要出
國遊學,看看另一個世界的美麗.在準備的過程中很辛苦,可是當我知道我通過了
考試,我的心雀躍不已,而這一切努力的代價都有值得.
6/28 終於出發了,這一天心情既充滿了不捨也充滿了興奮;這一天也特別令我
映像深刻.父母因為緊張擔心而不斷的提醒出門在外要小心好好的保護照顧好自
己,而我要踏上旅程前,父母也為我做了一個祝福禱告,就當我要跟他們離別時,我
卻不小心掉了眼淚,忍不住多看他們幾眼,因為這一道別就要一個月後再見了.這
一趟的旅程,沒有老師的帶領,全程都要我們自己獨立自我,互相幫忙,當我們拍下
出國前的大合照以後,我們這 10 位同學就成為了彼此的支柱,彼此依賴.
雖然這一次不是我第一次出國,可是還是會緊張,因為語言不熟練又加上所有
一切從出境到轉機至另一個機場全部都是要自己來.當我下了飛機以後,我是抱持
著小心翼翼謹慎的心態去面對,深怕一個不小心,就會搭不到飛機,甚至無法出關
進入到美國.但是天不從人算,就當我在洛杉磯出境的時候,外交官跟我說我的入
境卡和申報的單子過期了,必須要重新填過.可是重新填過又要重新排隊,而當時
出境的人又很多,深怕時間會延誤而搭不上另一班飛機.機場真的很大,而我們就
像無頭蒼蠅一樣找不到方向,況且我們必須在短時間內找到出口甚至找到另一個
機場,這一路我們都是小跑步,根本毫無時間停留慢慢欣賞洛杉磯這個地方.還好
外國人真的很善良,當我們問路的時候,他們不只告訴我們方向,甚至帶我們到定
點,以至於我們可以趕上飛往聖路易的飛機.而經過如此長拔奔波的旅途,我們終
於來到了聖路易,這裡是我們將要呆 3 天的地方,每一個人又餓又累的出了機場,搭
了接駁車到旅館休息.
在聖路易的這三天中,我們不敢浪費時間在睡覺上.起了大早吃飽早餐就準備
開始探險;拿了地圖搭了地鐵開始一天的旅程.在地鐵裡,所有都是在地人,完全看
不到任何一個華人.這時候找不到路就必須要發揮英語能力來溝通,不過很謝謝學
校送我們到如此內地的地方來學習道地的英文.很意外的在地鐵裡,我們遇到了流
浪漢,一開始我們並不知道也認不出他是這種人,隨意的問他該怎麼去 Galleria 百
貨公司,他好心的告訴我們,也在路上跟我們聊天,不過到了最後他說要跟我們一
起去,甚至跟我們要錢吃飯,我們才嚇到趕快拿 3 塊美元打發他走.不過,也有很好
心的人主動來鼓勵我們在外地讀書不簡單….各式各樣的人都有,真的很奇妙.外
國人真的很親切,在我們搭公車的時候,公車裡的人雖然互相不認識,但是他們卻
可以聊得很豪爽,我被他們的對話吸引到,但是我的語言能力不夠足以讓我聽得懂,
我很羨慕他們,所以下定決心把英文學好,不僅要訓練到說的流利也要聽得懂.外
國天氣熱的比想像中還要誇張,不過這並沒有打消想出去逛逛的念頭.我們去了紅
雀隊的球場,教堂,古老的火車站,遊樂園還有教堂.這些地方都讓我們大開眼界,雖
然是如此的炎熱到只想待在市內不想動,但我們仍然靠著雙腳一步一腳印走過體
驗.
在聖路易的第三天,也就是我們要離開聖路易前往南伊利諾的一天,這一天也
是我們第一次與接待我們的 TA 接觸,Kristi 非常的和藹可親也非常的熱情.她負責
照顧我們在這一個月當中,而她就像是我們在美國的媽媽.經過長達 2 個小時的路
程,我們終於到了宿舍.我很喜歡我們的宿舍,雖然只是小小的一間,可是卻很溫馨.
但唯一美中不足的地方就是宿舍沒有提供桌子,椅子,網路甚至更別說檯燈書桌了,
每一間房間都靠著那微微的兩盞燈維持著亮光,不過事後 kristi 也想盡辦法補足我
們的需求,我們非常真的很感激.接下來行李都放妥以後,我們去 walmark 買了生活
必需品,以及接下來每天吃的伙食,那間超市很大很大, 大到非常的誇張,在這裡可
以補足生活上所有的不足 ,我看到幾乎每一個外國人都推著裝著滿滿的推車,或
許每天下廚是他們的習慣吧,一次買 2 個禮拜的份量也不為過.在這邊生活很有趣,
尤其是在吃的方面,你可以自己煮或者是每一餐都外食,不過價格上就差很多,外
食一餐就要 300 塊,所以一開始外食的時候,每一塊錢都會斤斤計較,點餐時總是會
點最便宜的,有時候就連中餐也事先準備好帶去吃.當天晚上我們受 CESL office
的老師邀請到她家去用餐，這是我們第一次真正踏進美國人家中，果然如想像中
的精緻裝潢、重質感的布置,大大庭院,一踏入門就有可以感受到那溫馨的氣氛,
晚餐也相當的美味,好幾道菜擺在桌上，大家拿著餐盤輪流夾取要吃的菜餚，在
這當中老師們也非常的熱情,不斷的與我們聊天,完全讓我們沒有感到任何生疏感.
老師們對我們說,班上有很多阿拉伯人,也鼓勵我們在課堂中要不斷的發言,不要
害怕說英文,班上的同學和老師都非常喜歡台灣人,這段話也讓我們放了一顆心下
來.我們也得知,隔天要考托福以成績來分班考試,每個人都很緊張深怕會考不好
分到不好的班級. 回到宿舍以後,也因為擔心考試,拿了英文單字本起來惡補一下.
對於初次來到美國、初次來到伊利諾州、初次來到 Carbondale、初次踏進
南伊利諾校區的我們來說一切的一切都是那麼樣的新鮮，美國的陽光、美國的空
氣、美國的鳥鳴喚醒了我們，10 個從台灣來的新鮮人踏著新鮮的步伐參觀著伊
利諾校園也迎接該面對的分班考試，考完試後 CESL 有新生聚會，那時我們第一
次看到除了我們以外的新生，有阿拉伯人,巴西人,日本人,韓國人,中國人,哥倫比
亞…就像個小小的聯合國. 後來介紹 CESL 老師們,也發給我們一件只有 CESL
學生才有的衣服.對於這一切都非常的新鮮,我們也逛了校園,了解週遭的環境,也
了解學校的各個單位以及設施.校園非常的美麗,有時候還會不經意的發現兔子,
松鼠,還有鹿在草地上跳.
隔天是我們第一次上課, 美國學校是小班制教學，所以老師和學生的互動
很頻繁，第一天到班上的時候,我很失望,因為全班同學都是阿拉伯人,一開始我很
不適應,每天都在看著手錶什麼時候才可以下課.我覺得他們很吵,上課總是一直
講話,甚至有些同學還偷偷用阿拉伯語來溝通,這也讓我非常的困難來融入他們.
他們上課總是很踴躍來回答問題,完全沒有因為害怕講錯文法而不敢說英文, 反
而台灣的學生非常的安靜，但是老師都會非常鼓勵我們多多回答。一天兩天過去
了,老師總是以小組分組來討論問題,我與同學們就不再如此的生疏,而我也了解
到在課堂上直接回答老師的問題是他們的教學模式,唯有開口說出想法才會進步,
老師有時候也會和我們開玩笑，讓上課的氣氛不像平常那樣嚴肅，反而充滿了歡
樂；老師不管是在上課還是下課後都對我們非常親切，對我們都是有問必答，臉
上總是掛著燦爛的笑容.在那邊我真正體驗到國外的教學模式,並不是填鴨式的模
式,他們不直接給我們正確答案, 而是不斷的讓我們思考,在這一個月當中,我得到
很多在台灣無法體會到有關於學習英文的方法.其實我很慶幸能夠認識班上同學,
從一開始的反感到變成好朋友,縱使彼此之間有腔調溝通的問題,有時候甚至要問
上好幾遍才聽得懂對方表達的意思,不過相處一個月下來，彼此語言的隔閡已經
漸漸減少，用英文溝通，聊天，開玩笑已經變成是再稀鬆平常不過的事情了。
其實阿拉伯人並沒有想像中的恐怖,他們其實非常熱情大方,我記得有一次老師生
日,他們帶來了許多豐盛阿拉伯的甜點和飲料來請老師和同學們享用,他們說,他
們對老師就像是對自己的父母親一樣關愛.如此感動動作,也讓老師不經意的掉眼
淚.還有一次,我們因為要在大太陽底下走將近半小時的路程才能到宿舍,而有一
位同學也非常有愛心招待我們,開車送我們回宿舍.同學彼此之間不僅在課業上有
所切磋,在文化上也有更多的交流.
雖然我們去的並不是熱鬧的城市,並沒有高大華麗的大樓,但是我們在伊利諾
這個小城市裡卻也體驗到簡單放鬆的鄉村生活。在下課之餘,一有空檔 kristi 就會
帶著我們到處走走玩玩來體驗美國的生活.許許多多的地方都讓我想待在美國久
一點. kristi 開著車帶我們到印地安那州的 Water park 玩，足足開了四小時，超大
的遊樂園，我們玩得好開心，可是也被曬得好黑.第二個禮拜,學校安排我們去看
聖路易著名的拱門, 聖路易的拱門聽說有六百多呎高（相當於一百九十二公尺）
，
其外觀就是一個拱門狀，不過意想不到的是其拱門內暗藏玄機，拱門的內部真正
面目是一個電梯包廂，可以搭乘約五個人上去拱門最上方鳥瞰聖路易市,當我們
從最高點往下看整個聖路易城市,眼前的美景只能用不斷的讚嘆聲來形容。我記
得每一個禮拜,校園裡都會有樂團來表演,就像是個小型的戶外音樂會校園裡出現
很多很多的人潮，大家都帶著野餐地毯、舒服的椅子、啤酒、食物甚至是烤肉架
前往一個大草地，大家坐在草地上邊聽著樂團精彩的演出邊吃喝玩樂，大家都很
享受在其中,而這種優閒放鬆的生活,我想這一輩子也忘不了吧.
到了國外,其實我真的很想看看教會.很榮幸的剛好有一位班上的老師是基督
徒,她很熱情的邀請招待我,教會裡的人都很熱情,對待新來的朋友就像家人一樣.
因為牧師講的很快,有時候會聽不懂,但是老師卻一邊聽一邊寫下牧師所講的,為
了是要讓我了解,我真的很感謝老師.
在這一個月當中,說長不長,說短不短,在課程的最後一天,CESL 頒發了獎狀給
我們,很不捨得離開,也很捨不得跟老師們說再見,我永遠也忘不了當時跟老師們
到別的畫面. 在美國的一個月讓我學到很多東西，而且很多事情真的要親身經歷
過才能體會，我想這會成為我一輩子中很重要的回憶，因為這樣的機會並不多，
一開始到了美國很想回家,不過沒想到要回家的時候卻不想走了, 有太多人事物
讓人眷戀，有好多想去的地方，還有好多事想要去做，人的慾望總是無止盡，沒
有辦法全部滿足，但我知道至少我去過美國了，我擁有別人沒有的回憶還有經歷，
而那都會成為我生命中的一部分；謝謝學校提供獎學金給我們,謝謝父母讓我擁
有這一切,謝謝 kristi 的帶領及照顧,謝謝每一位認真的老師,謝謝每一位團員的包
容與照顧,若沒有你們,這趟旅行就不會完整. 這一個月對我來說就像做了一場最
美的美夢，但卻是真實的美夢，如此甜蜜的回憶我永遠不會忘記,而我也希望在
未來的日子裡夠還有機會出國進修.

It was just like a dream that I can go aboard by scholarship.At first,I applied
for the test of going aboard,and I studied very hard.But after that I felt so happy
when I passed it.Everything I do was all value. I have never think about I am so
lucky to get this chance to USA.
We went to the America on June 28, 2012. I felt excited but also felt sad to
leave and to say good bye to my parents.This day made me so impressed.Because
of worry,my parents reminded me to be careful and take care of to myself.Before I
began the trip,my parents prayed for me. Tear droped accidentally , and I can’t bear
to watch them more.All of us need to be independent and to help each other in
this trip,because we don’t have any teacher to lead us. When we took the last
picture in the lobby of airport, we start to rely on each other. Our trip is beginning.
Although this is not my first time to go aboard, I still felt nervous. When the
moment of departure starting, everything we must to do by ourselves,including
checking the boarding pass or transfer et.When I got off the airplane,I was carefull
to face it,because I was scared that I can’t take the airplane in
time.Unfortunately,when I departed from the LA,the diplomat told me that my
immigration card and the customs declaration card was expired.So that I have to
write it again.But I was so scared that we may be delay for the airplane.The airport
was very big,and we had to find the exit to another airport in the short
time.Fortunately,the foreign people are very kind.When we don’t know how to
go,they not only told us the direction but also took us to the destination so that we
can get the airplane to St.Louisie.Finally,we came to the St.Louise.This is the place
we had to stay here for three days.We were all tired and hungry when we walked
away from the airport.And then we took the shuttle bus to the hotel for the rest.
In St.Louise,we didn’t waste the time on sleeping in these three days.We
woke up ealy and began to explore.We took the metro-link and followed the map
to start for the first day.We didn’t see any chinese people in the metro-link,so that
when we can not find the destination,we have to use our English ability to
communicate.And I have to thank for the school that let us to learn native English
in the native country. Unexpectedly,we met the tramp.At first,we asked hime that
how to go to the Galleria.He told us the place and also chatted with us on the way
to the Galleria.But finally he wanted to go with us,and asked us the money to
eat.We were scared that to give him US3 to let him go away.Foreign people are
very kind.When we took the bus,people chatted with each other happily.I attracted
by their dialogue,and I decided to learn English well .Although the weather was so
hot,but we still went out to play.We went to the court,the cathedral,supermarket
and the union station.These places all made me amazing.
In the third day,we left and went to the Carbondale.This is our first time to
contact to our TA,Kristi.She is very kind and enthusiasm.She took care of us in this
one month,and she just like our mother in America.It took us two hours to the
Carbondale.Finally,we arrived to our dorm.Though my dorm was small, and there
had no table,chairs,internet and table lamp,but I still like it so much.Because the
dorm was very warm.We appreciate Kristi so much,because she helped us so
much,and She also found all the furnitures to us.After we put our luggage in our
dorm,we buy the life necessities and the food we eat eveyday in the
walmark.Walmark is very big ,we can buy everything over there.I saw the
pushing car were full of things.Maybe cooking everyday is their habit.The life is
very interesting here, especially the diet.You can cook everyday or to go,but the
price is different.To go costs us almost 300 dollors.So I always eat the cheapest
food in the restaurant.Sometimes we also cooked the food in advance then bring it
to the class.In the first day night,we were invited to the teacher’s home by CESL
office’s teacher.This was my first time to visited the America home.When you got
inside you can feel the warm.The dinner was very delicious,and everybody took
turn to take the food.All the teachers were very enthusiasm, they chatted with us
to make us not feel strange.The teachers also told us do not be afraid in the
class,they also encourage us to talk more in the class.They said that all the teachers
and classmates like Taiwan students so much.But we also heard the bad news,that
we had a TOFLE test tomorrow morning.I was so scared that I got the bad grade.So
when I backed to my dorm,I read some English book.
Everything for us is so fresh and new.We visited the campus and also faced
the test in the first day morning.After the test,we had the welcome party.That was
our first time to see different country people.There are Arab, Brazilians, Japanese,
Korean, Chinese people, Colombia ...just like a little United Nations.After eating,
they introduced their teachers,and they also gave us the CESL T-shirt for the
gift.The campus is very beautiful.Sometimes we can find the rabbits,squirrels,and
the deer appeared in the campus.
The next day is our first class.The teaching is the small class,so that teacher
and students are interactive frequently.I remembered that I felt upset and
disappointed when I was in the class first day.All my classmates were Arab,and I
couldn’t adapt in the class.I watched my wrist watch and though that when was
the class finished.The classmates were all active to answer the question,they were
not afraid of speaking wrong grammar and don’t speak.Contrary,Taiwan students
were very quiet.But the teacher always encourage us to speak more and answered
the question more.A few days passed ,teachers always grouped in small groups to
discuss the issue,classmates and I no longer to be strange.I also find out that
directly to speak and share the idea is their teaching mode.The only way to be
progressive needs to speak English often. Teacher in the class taught us grammar、
reading、listening and art . Teachers will give us a issue and let
us
to
discuss,every answers we have are not correct or wrong . Teacher said that is our
thinking and everyone’s thinking are special and good for everyone to
consult.Discussion is the most important thing in American education.So most of
teacher likes to chat with students. No matter how is it,they just like us to you to
speak.In this one month,I learn the method of learning English that I can’t know
through learning in Taiwan.Actually,it’s my honor that I am able to recognize my
classmates.From dislike them to become good friends.Even we have the problem of
tone and communication,and sometimes even have to ask several times to
understand the meaning that we express.But the estrangement of each other is
reduce in this one month.Communication,chat,joke has become ordinary.I
remember one time,there was our teacher’s birthday.Arab classmates brought the
delicious dessert and drinks to celebrate in the class.They said they treat the
teacher just like their parents.The action was warm and made our teacher cry.
Although we were not in a big city, we experienced the easy and relax
country life in this small town.When we have the time,Kristi took us to play and
experience the life in America.There are so many place that I want to stay in
America longer.Kristi drove a car to take us to the water park in the Indiana State.It
took us almost four hours.We had a good time in a large amusement water
park.But all of us also become brown by a hot sun.The second week,CESL arranged
a good activity for us —St.Louis.St.Louis is a big city.Whatever railway,bridge and
buildings were huge and large. It was a famous building at St.Louis,named “Arch
＂.It means “The gate to west.＂It high 662 feets(192 meter).It is a very high
building.It had elevator inside the Arch. We could seat it and went the highest
point to see the whole view of St.Louis.When I wanted to down ground ,I found
Mississippi river was behind me.The famous river was so close with me. I could feel
the river as if was alive.
On every Thursday,it has the tea time in the CESL and there have
many ice cream, coffee, and hot chocolate for us. It’s one of my favorite time in
here.
There also have sunset concert every Thursday.Everybody bring the picnic
carpet,comfortable chair,beer,food,and even have the barbecue in the big
grass.Many people sit on the grass and listen to the music.I really enjoy the time
when we in
Carbondale. We have many memorize there, see many different things there and
learn many things.
I really wanted to go to the church when I was in the America.
Fortunately,my teacher is a christian,and she was very enthusiathm to invited me
to the church.People were very kind in the church,and they treated me just like
their family.The pastor’s speech was so fast that I can’t understand clearly,but my
teacher wrote down what he said to let me understand.I thank my teacher so
much.
The last day of the course,CESL presented the award to us.I was
unwilling to leave and to said goodbye to all my teachers and classmates.I will
never forget the picture that we said goodbye to them.I learned a lot in this one
month. Although I have returned to Taiwan, I recalled everything that happened in
America. Southern Illinois University Carbondale seemed like a dream which I have
made is not real, but it happened indeed. Time was so short for me, but it has
actually left an important page in my short life. I have recalled this all, what was a
really unforgettable experiences that I could not forget in my life.The day we were
go to St. Louis airport and come back to Taiwan, we were at the lobby of our
apartment to say good bye to Kristi and
our friends. Then I feel sad because I don’t want to depart from them and
Carbondale. I think it will be the sweetest and the most wonderful dream for me in
my whole life. I will miss everything and everyone there.Thank ISU send me there
to learn many things and make many good friends there.Thank Kristi took care of
us.Thank all my parner bear and look after me.The trip would not be completely

從未做過的美國夢，突然插播在我的人生，開始一齣刻
骨銘心的連續劇。
幾個月前，我茫然得去考試，看見身旁的人戰戰兢兢應
試，深深覺得出國的夢非常的遙遠，原本想放棄，但想透過
一次考試檢閱自己的程度，我把當天所有的精神都放在那份
試卷上，也許會為我帶來一個驚奇。
這是第一次出國，即遠飛遙遠的美國，心中有無比的期
待和害怕，甚麼事對我而言都是新鮮的。記得去申辦有聽過
卻沒有親眼看過的護照，當時是多麼雀躍不已。當坐上高鐵
行徑去桃園機場的心情時，突然間有點不捨台灣，這片我多
麼親近、我從未離開的土地，我開始心跳急促慌張。
Check-in、出境、登機，一幕幕就像是電影般場景的慌
亂，沒有帶團老師，只有我們 10 個同學互相幫忙，一切就
這麼刺激緊張。十二、三小時的飛機真得令人腰酸背痛，第
一次坐飛機就留下痛苦的記憶，但是我依然期待著美國那片
不同的土地。到達洛杉磯時，在一個不同空氣、不同人群、
不同國家的大機場轉機、check-in、登機，沒有中文，這時候
我們也更慌張、驚恐，但這一切一切都在我的生活留下一片
深深的經驗。
轉機到聖路易城市，我們有兩天的時間自由旅行，這一
切就像去森林探險一樣，非常酷、非常刺激，似乎隨時充滿
著不預期的危險，但我們紛紛往前探索。
由於搭乘地鐵，非常的方便，我們到了幾處名勝地點：
聖路易有名的紅雀隊棒球場、舊車站，還有當地的城市博物
館，但是卻碰上火災，但在那天，我看見美國的文化，父母
會花很多時間陪著小孩生活學習並且啟發小孩思考，我開始
嚮往美國不同於台灣的文化教育。
當我到達卡本代爾小鎮，這麼純樸安靜的環境，突然有
些小失望，但是在歡迎晚餐中，我被學校老師們感動，他們
做事效率極高，也非常積極為我們服務，還準備晚餐和蛋糕
歡迎我們義守大學的學生，讓我們歡樂不已。
我們去了沃爾瑪賣場，買了許多食材，我們要為每一天
準備可口美味的早餐及晚餐，每晚我們都聚在一起吃飯，討
論每一天的生活，感情越來越好。
第一天到學校，一早就準備托福考試，看見密密麻麻以
及非常多的不解單字，我發誓，我要更加努力學習英文，並
且在這一個月好好的磨練自己。讓我印象非常深刻的是，第
一堂課老師要我們簽下不剽竊智慧財產權的聲明書，讓我見
識到美國注重權利的堅持。
在這語言中心上課很有趣，有別於台灣的教育，這裡總
是要分組討論，發表自己的想法，老師鼓勵我們多發言，身
旁的阿拉伯同學們也是非常的積極，激起我也熱血奔騰的躍
躍欲試。剛開始，真的非常不習慣任何一個題目都要分組討
論，但是我漸漸發現其實這樣的方式讓我進步得很快。一開
始，老師、同學說話速度很快有時候真的不懂說些甚麼，但
是到第三星期，聽力部分明顯得比之前進步許多，真是不負
苦心人。
在美國這段期間，碰上國定假日，我們去 rent one park
看棒球，真的很欣賞美國人參加活動的積極度；我們也在學
校參與黃昏露天演唱會，讓我驚訝的是，我真的親眼看到大
家帶著野餐墊、樂高在草皮上欣賞和放鬆，這是台灣不常見
的景象；我們去參觀酒莊，在美國非常嚴格，要 21 歲才能
喝酒，但是那邊的寧靜，深深沉澱了疲憊的心；我們也去美
國當地的 PUB，讓我見識到美國人民開放的風情，雖然我很
不習慣，但還是盡情得跟著音樂放鬆心情。這都是很難得的
經驗。
第三週，我搭上美國的火車，和在美國的舅舅相約前往
知名城市：芝加哥，一切就像夢境穿梭在眼簾，不是那
麼真切。經過長途奔波，我看見繁榮的城市，高樓大廈、
燈光明亮、老舊地鐵、風情十足的人民，我穿梭來到芝
加哥。來到芝加哥，當然不免到「中國城」參訪，突然
間湧起我對台灣深深的思念阿！我們搭上老舊的地鐵開
始一個奇幻的旅程。我們先到非常著名的最高大廈「Willis
Tower」
，站在 107 樓層的外凸玻璃時，我緊張得說不出
話來，讓這景象實在令我震懾，好壯觀！接下來，我們
到千禧公園，有非常多人在嬉戲參觀，透過反射，我笑
得不亦樂乎，實在很有趣。我們搭上芝加哥運河船，觀
賞芝加哥有名的建築物。另外是我最喜歡的「海軍碼頭」
，
有許多親近的海鷗、五大湖、美麗的天空，我們在黃昏
之際，乘船到五大湖上欣賞美麗的碼頭，夜晚，我們飲
著啤酒，隨著樂團舞動身體，我發現，我悄悄得愛上芝
加哥。我真的不敢相信我置身在電影中的情結。
最後一星期在卡本代爾語言中心，萬般不捨，難過
的心情，好想留在這邊與活潑可愛的同學們繼續念書，
但是這美夢就要劃下句點。最後一天，我幾乎沒有勇氣
踏進教室，除了不捨就是離別難過，這邊有幫助我的好
朋友，有陪著我說笑的同學，好想留下來。我們拍了一
張合照，同學們鼓勵著我，相互擁抱後，我知道，我真
的置身在美國，我愛上他們，愛上卡本代爾，愛上美國。
在最後的歡送會，我們準備演講稿，影片，我們都哭了，
卡本代爾就像是我們的家，在這邊有溫暖有歡笑有淚水，
還有我們最真切的感情。2012 我在美國度過一個歡樂無
止盡的美夢，這樣的環境是學習的溫床。我愛 Southern
Illinois University，我愛 Carbondale，我愛 I-Shou University.

There was a dream of going American that I have never thought of,
finally it came true this summer, and everything was like a drama which
suddenly appears in my life.
Several months ago, I went to take the examination but not
knowing what to do, because all the competitors were so aggressive and
wanting to get this chance eagerly. I felt the opportunity is so limited
that I tend to give up the thought of going America at the very beginning.
However, I tried to calm myself down and to take the examination as a
way to estimate my ability, and try to put all my concentration on it,
looking forward a good outcome.
This was the first time I want abroad, going to a country which is
far away from Taiwan. My heart is filled with expectation and fear, for
everything is new to me. I still remembered the amazement of applying
for the first passport of my own, and I just can help but feel nervous and
start missing my lovely and most familiar hometown when getting on the
high-speed train and left for Taoyuan airport.
Check-in, boarding, departure, and many things we need to
manage was all in a harry and with the panic, cause there was neither
any teacher nor any people who have any experience of going abroad
could help us, a group of 10.However, fortunately all the members of the
group worked in cooperation with each other, and then we conquered
all the obstacles and difficulties.
The first time’s flight left me with an awful experience, for the
flight which took 12 to 13 hours really was not so comfortable to me, but
I still expected to see the brand new land where I had never been. As we
arrived at the airport in Los Angeles where was filled with totally
different sorts of people, atmosphere and everything was conducted in
English, and these all made us not felt at ease. However, that experience
was one of the most unforgettable parts of my memories.
Then we transferred to St. Louis where we have two days of
leisure time to spend there, like to go to the forest for an adventure, it
was really very exciting and joyful, although it seemed full of dangers,
but we just wanted to enjoy the pleasure of exploring everywhere.
Taking a subway is a convenient way for us to go to many places,
and we went to several tourist spots: St. Louis Cardinals baseball field,
the old station, as well as the local city museum. However, unfortunately,
we ran into a fire. In that day, I also saw many parents in America who
spend a lot of time to accompany their child’s learning and try their best
to inspire children to think, I began to dream of the American
culture…especially in the educational aspect, cause there’s a sea of
differences comparing the education in Taiwan with the one in the USA.
When we arrived at the small town called Dhaka Carbondale such
a quiet and primitive place. I just felt a little bored and somehow
disappointed. However, during the welcome dinner, I was so
appreciated and moved by the teachers in the school, because of their
efficiency let the all the things done in a quick and convenient way, and
they were always willing to help us anytime. They also prepared a cake
to treat us, it’s so considerate, and we all felt the warm.
The next day we went to a mall called Wal-Mart, and purchased
lots of food, and ingredient which is needed, because we wanted to
make delicious breakfast and dinner by ourselves in the following days.
Every day, we had the meals together, enjoyed our life there and we get
along very well.
The first day at school, in the early morning, we started preparing
for the TOEFL, seeing so many words that confused me, I was
determined to study harder and harder, and kept training and
challenging myself during the month. To my impressment, the professor
made it a rule to let us sign on a statement of the intellectual property
rights which don’t allow any form of plagiarism in the first class, which
make me convinced by the insistence of protecting their rights.
Classes in the language center was very interesting, different from
Taiwan's education, all the classmates would be divided into small
groups and then each group had to work out the answer by discussion,
during the class, it could always triggered lots of different and unique
thoughts. Teachers encourage us to speak and express our ideas more,
and one of my classmates was a diligent and aggressive student who
arouses my desire to try more. To be honest, I was not used to have this
kind of classes in the beginning, but as the time went by, I gradually
found that it’s really the best way to make a fast but apparent progress.
For example, my listening ability had approved day by day from the state
of couldn’t understand most the contents in the classes to the degree
that I can catch up with what teacher said in the third week I stayed
there.
Whenever a national holiday came, and we went to the rent one
park to watch baseball .I really appreciated the enthusiasm of Americans
to participate in this kinds of sport events. In addition, we also went to
take part in the open-air concerts which were held in the campus in the
evening, and what impressed me was everyone there always took a
picnic pad and Lego with them and sit down in the ground to enjoy and
relax, because it might be common to them, but it was not a scene that
we usually see in Taiwan.
We visited the winery, and because according to American law,
people could drink only when they reach the age of 21. The winery set a
strict rule to prevent the under-age people from drinking, so we couldn’t
even have one cup of wine, but I really enjoys the serene atmosphere
there, it helped my mind and body clam down. We also went to the local
PUB, and I felt open style of the people in the United States, although I
was not used to this sort of occasion, but I still tried to fit in and enjoy
every single moment and dance as the music played. These also were
different and unforgettable experience.
The third week, I took the train and wanted to meet my uncle who
has settled in the USA for years in Chicago, everything seemed so unreal
just like a dream. During the time I took the train, I saw the prosperity of
the city, high-rise buildings, many bright and shining lights, the ancient
subway, and fascinating people dressed in their own style. As I arrived at
Chicago, without any doubt, couldn’t help but to visit the famous "China
Town" there, suddenly I missed Taiwan so much again.
We took the old subway then start a fantastic journey. First, we
visited one of American’s tallest buildings "Willis Tower", standing on
the 107 floors made out of the convex glass, I was so nervous and scared
to see this scene that I couldn’t even say anything, however, the
spectacle and unique design there also make me felt astonished and
Then, we went to the Millennium Park, there are many people playing
there, I laughed so loudly because of the special reflection from the
mirror, it’s was really interesting. Finally, we caught the Chicago canal
boat to watch all the Chicago's famous buildings.
Apart from the places mention above, the "Navy Pier is my
favorite one, with the lovely gulls which we can play with. Also, the
Great Lakes, was worth to pay a visit to by taking boat to go around in
the dusk, drinking a bottle of beer, listening to the music and dancing
with the dance company. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the
wonderful city so deeply.
The last week we stayed at Language Center in Carbondale,
My mind was always filled with many sentiments, I really wanted to stay
there with these lovely classmates and continue to study, but this dream
just came to an end soon. The last day, I almost didn’t have the courage
to step into the classroom, but I knew I had to…to say goodbye with
these friend who helped me in the short but meaningful journey. We
took a group photo, and my classmates encouraged me then embrace
each other, and I know, I'm really being in the United States, fell in love
with them, fell in love with Carbondale, fell in love with the United
States. In the final farewell party, we prepare a speech, video, and we all
wept in tears nonstop, because Carbondale is just like our home, here is
full of our joy, laughter, tears as well as our true feelings. In 2012,I
fulfilled my American dream and there is also the environment of
learning which I always dreamed of…so I had to say that I love Southern
Illinois University, and I love Carbondale, and I love the I-Shou University.

這次的暑假很榮幸能獲得學校遊學美國出團的機會，人們常說讀
萬卷書不如行萬里路，唯有真正實際踏進那塊大地，才能感受到當地
的氣息、氛圍，還未到過如美國一般廣大國家的我，在初次步入美國
洛杉磯機場時，充分感受到大國家的遼闊，不論是第一、第二或是第
幾航廈，都是如此的寬廣，而後，經過一次的國內線轉機，來到了聖
路易市。在入住飯店的過程中多少有些許凌亂，畢竟是不同的國家，
有著不同的生活方式等，所幸，一切的接待程序還算順利，就這樣進
入了美國，剛入境尚需做調整之一的一大生活模式就是時差，日夜完
全顛倒，對此也經過兩三天的適應期，再來就是在美國的第一餐了，
只能說，美式的餐點口味與東方頗有差距，似乎偏重，高油、高鹽、
高熱量等，但我們沒有因此反制，還算樂在其中，無論是歐姆蛋、炸
豬排、馬鈴薯泥或是超鹹的濃湯，都是一道道震撼教育，然而，回程
時仍有同行的團員念念不忘。
折騰了一段時間，我們因為行程的安排而有了兩三天的自由行，
坦白說，這是一個很好的機會，可以由自己去嘗試、接觸及認識一個
全新的國家，就這樣，我們一行人搭著輕軌，看著地圖，在聖路易市
四處遊走，踏在一個遙遠國度的土地上，頗有感觸，不論是一切的人、
事、物都截然不同，街道的配置、建築的型態、往來的車輛，任何一
樣都比原鄉地寬闊，這樣是理所當然的，還記得當時去的大型超市、
氣氛餐廳、百貨、棒球場等等，每一處都有嶄新的體驗，同時也認識
了一點美國，美國或許真的是太大了，不同州有不同的生活，之前感
覺道地的美國人如東岸一般，因為忙碌而沒有太多閒暇時間可以與他
人交流，但我們來的聖路易密蘇里州與伊利諾州的人還算親和力高，
在我們有需幫助時仍會給予支柱，結束了兩三天的自我探險後，我們
即將前往伊利諾州。
也許是在台灣的小環境生活過久，以致養成慣性守時的習慣，在
與約定教師來接駁的前半個鐘頭，我們甚早就完成打包的動作，但沒
想到最後我們在約定的時間後多等了大約一個半鐘頭巴士才抵達，也
許是路途太過遙遠所致，我想；這位年輕的教師有著一頭深褐色的頭
髮和一副適中大小的造型太陽眼鏡，一如我們預想的，非常的開朗健
談不冷場，這位被我們稱作「媽咪」的老師，也是之後帶著我們四處
觀光學習的導遊，更是在我們回程時最想念的媽咪；經過了兩三個小
時的車程終於到了我們在學校附近的公寓，到達時還是很難想像兩三
鐘頭的車程在美國算是「很近」的距離，之後我們到了在美國負責接
待我們的在美結婚生活的先生家中有了一頓歡迎晚餐，這也是美國很
普遍的一種社交生活，我們也在那熟悉了一些在美生活的功課，之後
當然就是準備「上課」了。
在這短短一個月的美國教育中，充分感受到美式教育和亞洲教育
的截然不同，上課幾乎如同在聊天，依該章的主題做分組的討論活動，
因此是很對話式的創造性學習，每堂課每位同學都要發言，說出自己
的想法，因為沒有標準答案，所以大家也都很能放心的想說什麼就說
什麼，而東方的試驗制度因著有標準解答的壓力下，較少人會願意負
著答錯的風險而表達，光是這點就差距良多，因此，與其說是在上課，
不如說是在和朋友共同討論一件主題，是種很活的學習模式，同時也
認識了來自不同國家的朋友，有巴西、哥倫比亞、沙烏地阿拉伯、中、
日、韓的朋友們在同一個環境學習，不同的背景更讓我看到了許多文
化的溝通，算是一種有趣的交流，然而，大家到語言學校的原因也是
層出不窮，有人是準備要念當地的大學，有人是因應在當地工作所需，
有人只是作語言的研習，更有人是因為在原國家沒有足夠的大學而被
政府外遣至其他國家做升學，藉著這個機會，也算是小小地拓展外國
的人脈，在未來可能需要支柱時能相互照應，之中更有些是已有家庭
及工作的家長級同學，這也讓我見識到一些國外的教育觀，有些人畢
業後不急著升學反倒是直接進入社會，待到有需的時候再復學，不只
其他國家，經過詢問當地教師後得知，美國高中畢業僅四分之一的學
生繼續修習大學，其餘多是海外留學生居多，無論如何，在美國的學
校中學到很多、看到很多、認識了很多，也藉此重新反思學習的意義
及一些處世之道和人生觀，在創造性的教育中更證明了美國的先進是
無庸置疑的，此外，課外活動更是美式生活不可或缺的一部分。
每逢周末或三兩天，我們的媽咪都會依著預定的觀光行程帶著大
家四處遊走，還記得我們去過兩個酒吧景點、一個天然瀑布、水上樂
園、超人博物館、週期性音樂會、當地棒球賽及聖路易著名的拱門等，
每一處都有新的見識，也讓我更加認識美國，也許是因為我們是外國
人，在與美國人交談時他們對我們似乎備感親切，與生人大都可自然
而然地聊起來，並無想像中的隔閡，非常之愜意，然而，適時地防衛
仍是必需的，但幸運地，在這次的旅行中並沒有遇到太過奇怪的人事
物，也許是因為伊利諾州較偏郊外地區，在「小鎮」中人們的關係距
離較接近，無太大的社會問題，使得每一次的觀光總帶回許多愉悅的
記憶，也增添了這次遊學內容的多樣性。
在真正踏過美國的土地後，深深體會到自己的渺小，這個世界是
非常之寬廣，有機會去見識見識時一定要好好把握住，過程中或有些
許障礙必須調適，但這就是一種學習，書中所見到的不一定就能反映
出當地實際的狀況，時間一直在前進著，生活也是，因此，即使這次
到美國的旅行是如此，或許下一次再來這裡時已經人事已非了，在有
限的生活過程中，就應趁著條件允許時多多見識，見識不同人群的生
活方式、價值觀，在即將回國的前幾天，還認識了一位在南伊利諾大
學裡的職員，他也告訴我，若想拓展自己在建築物方面的靈感，不可
或缺的就是旅行，因著我修習的科系及他旅行多國的經驗，每當到一
個新的國家可以從該地的建築特色對當地的生活略知一二，此外，實
地去接觸各國家的每一塊磚，比起觀看參考書目更能體會它的功用、
潛能，這也是旅行的一大作用，有些事物光從文字敘述上無法懂得的，
透過旅行就能慢慢地了解，也更能銘記在心，在美國中學到了獨立及
合作，獨立是當自己身處異國中遇到事情的一些解決的應變能力，即
使可能無法完善，但還可過關，並且更不怕遇到困難，合作是和團員
們相互關照時所需共識的，每個人有不同的想法及見解，要在其中選
擇出大家有共同意識的，也是一項課題，在未來接觸社會職場的時候，
將會遇到人與人的相處之道，為此更需不斷的學習，學習知識，也學
習生活。

I’m glad to have the chance to join the School Study Tours. As
the saying goes, '' He that travels far knows much.'' We can’t feel the
atmosphere if we do not real get to the place. I have not been to the majority of
countries such as the United States, the first time I go into the Los Angeles
airport, then I feel the vastness of the Grand National. No matter where I was,
They were so wide-ranging. We caught a connecting flight to St. Louis. There
were not so difficult things in addition to find the terminal. It was a little messy
to check in when we came to our hotel. After all, different countries have
different lifestyles, but we still made it fortunately. So I entered U.S. and I
needed to adapt to the time zone as well. It’s completely upside down between
day and night. I took almost three days to adapt it. And the meal in U.S. was
very different from Oriental, They were high oil, high-salt, high-calorie. But we
still had fun and enjoyed the food there. Omelette, deep-fried pork, mashed
potato, or super-salty soup were a kind of Shock Training, however, there had
some people who still missed them on return trip.
Through a couple of days, we got a chance to have two or three
days of free individual travel due to our schedule. It was a good opportunity to
discover and know a country by our own. In this way, we took a metro link to do
some travels. We bought the tickets, looked at the map, walked around in St.
Louis City, and I felt deep touched at the same time. How big the city was.
Everything was so wide that I could felt the different ways even if it was just a
street. The building type, passing cars were amazing too. I could still
remember the super large supermarkets, restaurants, department stores,
baseball fields, etc. Maybe U.S. was just too big. I thought people were be cold
in a busy city in U.S. Fortunately, we came to St. Louis, Missouri and Illinois
and they had kind people there. There always had people who gave us a hand
when we needed it. So we did enjoy the free time that we could see the city
whatever we wanted. We bought many stuff, took many pictures, and ate many
great food. After these days, we were about to go to Illinois.
Perhaps we live in Taiwan for a long, long time, and we so
develop the habit of being puntual. The truth was that we picked up our stuff
very early and prepared to wait the teacher who would pick us up. We did have
no idea that we would finally wait almost three hours for the teacher after the
agreed time. I thought maybe it was too far to get to the place on time.
Eventually she came to us. At the first time we saw her, she was with a suitable
pair of sunglasses and long, brown hair. As we expected, she was so nice and
talkative that we didn’t felt bored, and she also was the person who called
‘’mommy’’ by us and the person whom we missed a lot on return trip. She
drove us to our apt nearby school. It took two or three hours to get there,
however, it still was a short drive in U.S., and I just couldn’t image that so. After
that, we had a welcome dinner by a family who in charge of everything for us in
U.S., I thought it was a popular social activity in this country too. We were
familiar with some of life skills there, the things they said were helpful, and then
we were ready for school though.
In just one month in the American education, I felt totally different
types between the American and the Asia. We had class as in chat, and we
discussed every subjects we had in each chapters. It was a kind of creative
style with talking way to learn things so we never felt bored or wanted to sleep.
Every students should say something. Luckily, we could say whatever we
wanted to say because there were no the standard answers. In this way, I
could say that the American education was really alive, and it was better
than the examination system in Asia. Under the pressure of standard answers,
people may afraid to answer the questions due to make mistakes. At the same
time, I made some foreign friends as well, there were some of people
from Brazil, Colombia, Saudi-Arabia, China, Japan, and
South Korea. Different background made me see many
cultural communication, and it was an interesting experience, moreover, the
reasons why they been there were not the same too. Someone was preparing
to go to study the local university in SIU, someone was
response in the local work required, someone was just for language learning,
and someone was because they did not have enough universities in the former
country, their government repatriated them to other countries to do their
studies. Whatever the reasons were, we came here together, and we learned
together. Although we were different countries of people, we could still
understand what we wanted to express. I thought it was owing to the same
feelings we had. By this chance, I expanded a little of the international network
of people. Some of their students were the parents level mates who had own
family in their hometown. This had also allowed me to see an insight into
the concept of abroad education. Some people after graduation are no hurry
to their studies but rather directly into the workplace, and then return to
school until the time when there is a need. More than in other countries, after
I asked local teachers, they said that ‘’only a quarter of the students
of American high school graduation continue to attend college, and their
colleges have many overseas students mostly.’’ In any case, I learned a
lot, saw a lot, met a lot of experiences at the American School, and
I reconsidered the significance of learning some life skills and outlook on life. In
addition, the extra-curricular activities are an integral part of American life.
Our Mommy would bring everyone to wander around every
weekend or two-three days. I could still remember the attractions of two bars, a
natural waterfall, water
parks, Superman Museum, periodic concerts, local baseball game and St.
Louis's famous arch etc. Each part had brand new stories, and I knew more
about American culture. Perhaps it was because we were foreigners, we felt
more intimate while we talked with Americans. Also, I brought many things
back, clothes, souvenirs, U.S. products, and memories. However, defense was
still necessary, but we fortunately didn’t get into a big troubles on this trip.
Illinois is a small place, people who live in a town can get closer to each other
and they have less social problems. Anyway, every sightseeing
brings back many pleasant experience, and it also add
to the diversity of the content of this Study Tour.
After I really stepped on the land of the United States, I felt the
life I live before was very small. This world is pretty wide so we have to seize
the opportunity when we have chance to see it. There may have some
obstacles while we pass them, but these just are learning experiences. The
things in books are not exactly the real situations. Time keeps going and life
does too. Even if it’s the same place I saw, it would change to another way
when I come to it in the next time. In limited life process, you should take
advantage of a lot of insight when conditions permit and try to see any new
things. Before I came back to Taiwan, I met a guy working for SIU. He told me
that if I would love to be a great engineer like a architect, I should do more
travels so. He is a traveler who has ever been to many countries. We can’t feel
each brick if we don’t get to there and touch it by our own hands. It’s much
better than watching a book. It also is a great advantages of traveling because
we can’t feel something by books. Through we travel to other places, we do
more remember them all. I learn independence and cooperation in America. I
can calm down and solve the problems while being in a different country
because of independence. And we need consensus when we are put into a
team. Everyone has different ideas and opinions, in which you
want to select a common sense, is a important topic. That’s
cooperation. When we contact with the community in the future workplace,
we will need to get along with people who might be our partners. That is why
we need to keep learning, learn knowledge, and learn how to live as well.

2012 學海遊學 美國南伊利諾大學團 中文心得報告

2012 年 6 月 28 日，我作了一個嚮往很久的夢，這天，我帶著我的行李抵達
桃園國際機場；我，即將搭上飛機，前往美國。經過十小時多的飛行，從白天飛
到黑夜再飛到白天，我們一行人終於抵達美國的第一站－洛杉磯。排隊等待過海
關時，心裡充滿緊張，畢竟在抵達洛杉磯之前我們仍是用中文交談著，而面對海
關的詢問，難免顯得有點惶恐，深怕自己若是有個不小心就得要原地折返了，幸
好沒有問什麼太艱深的問題，還聽得懂，海關先生還跟我聊起我穿的外套，舒緩
了我的緊張，最後，他跟我說:「Welcome to America!Have a nice trip!」我
說:「Thank you!」通過海關後等著我們的是下一班轉往 St. Louis 的飛機，還
來不及好好看看洛杉磯的模樣，一行人急忙忙在偌大的機場奔跑，就怕趕不上!
總算抵達登機門前，噎在喉嚨的那口氣終於鬆下。
美國時間 6 月 28 日我們抵達了在 St. Louis 下褟的飯店，這時的我們雖因
為長途飛行而顯得有些疲憊，卻還是出門到隔壁加油站的超商買晚餐吃。發現他
們超商與台灣的便利商店截然不同!店裡沒有微波便當、飯糰，只有三明治、熱
狗堡、潛艇堡、生菜沙拉，冷飲櫃內啤酒與碳酸飲料佔大多數，其他不是果汁就
是不知名的東西。回到飯店後，本來應該疲憊得一沾床就昏睡，精神卻異常清醒，
直到凌晨三點才入睡，卻無奈的在兩個小時後自動醒來，我想應該就是所謂的時
差問題吧，其他人似乎也是這樣，但五點多飯店還未供應早餐，只好打開電視打
發時間，美國節目都沒有字幕，只能光靠聽力去理解，講話速度不比在台灣所聽
到的，勉強聽懂一些單字連接起來的意思；等到六點多，下樓吃早餐囉!連續吃
三天一樣的早餐還真膩，真不懂這些食物，不是太鹹就是太甜，真虧他們能這樣
一路長到這麼大…聽說我們得在 St. Louis 待到 7 月 1 日才能搬進學校為我們安
排的住處，所以這兩天我們沒有浪費，第一天搭著 metro link，似乎是捷運的
感覺，不過卻沒有查票員或查票機，讓我們裹足不前了一下子，但看到別人都是
直接走進去，我們也就放膽走進去。這天的行程是要去 TA 介紹的當地的購物廣
場，不過它卻沒有顯示在地圖指南上，大家都不知道該往哪個方向走，後來因緣
際會下成功地來到了我們的目的地－Galleria。逛完後返回飯店用晚餐，一天的
行程就結束了，隔天早上，我們坐在一起討論今天的行程，後來決定要去市區參
觀教堂，沒想到後來卻變成想到哪就走到哪的模式。我們在城市裡亂走亂逛，看
到 Supermaket 就走進去繞繞，想看棒球場就去看，整個很隨性!美國天氣比想像
中熱太多，天天都超過華式一百度，走在路上都覺得整個人都要燒起來，但是室
內溫度卻冷到要穿外套，溫差真大。
第三天早上退房後等待 TA 來接我們，經過約兩個小時的車程，到達我們未
來一個月的住所，有小小客廳、小小廚房、小小浴室、全新的床被。當天我們的
TA 名叫 Kristi，載我們到 Walmart 採買民生用品，接著晚上我們到招待家庭享
用歡迎晚餐，招待我們的是一位任教的女老師，老公是台灣人，那天晚上她煮了
白米及燉豬肉，使我們一行早在第一天就受不了美式食物的小孩們忍不住歡呼並
感動得痛哭流涕，畢竟，美國人主食不是白米和豬肉阿!
第一天到南伊利諾大學就得先參加分級考試，中午在禮堂邊吃著 pizza 和很
甜的巧克力餅乾邊看老師們的自我介紹，其實後來才發現，我們並不是在大學內
上課，而是在大學內的語言中心 CESL 上課，CESL 的全名為 Center for English
as a Second Language，在美國分佈蠻多。
直到親身體驗過美式教育才懂得為何人家會說台灣的教育缺陷，我很喜歡老
師們上課方式，雖然天天都派回家作業，但是卻感覺無比的充實，我也很喜歡跟
老師們聊天，雖然能用的字彙有限，有時候也會溝通不良，但是老師們都很有耐
心的詢問，就算我的文法錯誤，但她們知道我想要表達的意思。而關於回家作業，
她們都比較著重於有沒有完成，不管單字是否拚錯，文法正確與否，一上課馬上
檢查有沒有完成作業，之後或許才會檢討。通常一到四的課從早上八點開始，最
晚到下午三點多，週五只到中午而已。課表依照每個人分配的班級而不同 。在
CESL 我看到一個很奇妙的景象，有八成學生都來自阿拉伯國家，CESL 屬於小班
制，每一班人數都大約 12~14 人，以我所在的班級來說，全班共 10 位學生，一
位來自中國、兩位來自台灣，剩下的都是阿拉伯人，其他班應該也是差不多情形，
剛開始很難理解阿拉伯仁的口音，老師們竟然聽得懂讓我很是佩服，其實，聽久
了也就漸漸聽懂他們再說什麼了，大家也漸漸熟捻起來，上課氣氛也很歡樂，阿
拉伯同學常讓老師們無言以對、也常說一些無俚頭的話讓大家笑到不行。
學校的 Student center 內有保齡球場，推出平日下午打保齡球只要八塊美
金，還附贈一份指定的麥當勞套餐。Student center 裡面不只有保齡球場和麥
當勞，還有 Starbucks 和中式餐館等等，最特別的是他們的書局內竟然販售大量
南伊利諾大學的周邊商品，幾乎可以說什麼都賣，大至衣服褲子小至文具用品都
印上了南伊利諾大學的縮寫 SIU(Southern Illinois University)，連街上的書
局都有在賣，令我大開眼界!在美國沒車等於沒腳!我們深深體會了這句話，我們
通常都利用平日下課後到 Walmart 採買東西，沒交通工具只能搭公車，搭到那大
約 15 分鐘車程，但是從那裡搭回來卻要 50 分鐘，因為公車是單程，也就是繞一
圈的意思，所以十分麻煩，有時不得以的情況就是大家合資搭計程車，說到計程
車也不是向台灣的計程車一樣按機器跳表，而是問司機到那裡需要多少錢，重點!
還要再加小費給司機，美國的小費文化真是令我們大感吃不消，而且物價也比台
灣高，再加上 0.08%的稅，假設說一塊美金的商品，最後要付 1.08 塊美金，本
來以為可以退稅，上網查詢之後發現並不是每個地方都能退稅，剛好伊利諾州就
不在其中之ㄧ。
每個週末 CESL 和 Kristi 都有為我們安排活動，像是去 Water Park、棒球
場看球賽、很有氣氛的餐館、露天音樂會、在學校內的湖泊划船還有很不像 KTV
的 KTV 等等，CESL 也在第二週辦個一日遊 St. Louis，邀請所有 CESL 的學生參
加，不過只有一台車的人去，在車上有巴西團還有阿拉伯團再加上我們台灣團，
巴西人在車上超嗨，不僅大笑還揮舞著他們的國旗高歌，阿拉伯人也不甘示弱、
緊接在後，整車一路上熱熱鬧鬧，好不快樂!
話說從頭，其實 CESL 的課程，一期是六週，但學校只給我們四周，這是比
較可惜的，因為我們都很想要有始有終，當返國的日子一步步接近，最初那種巴
不得快點回台灣的心情早已變調，而是非常依依不捨，同學們和老師們都是，從
覺得一個月時間很漫長變成一個月時間實在太短，我捨不得離開這個純樸的小鎮，
縱使它熱到讓我受不了、交通也很不方便，但是這一個月的生活，卻是我可以回
味ㄧ輩子的美好回憶，有人說這一切就好像一場夢，對我來說亦同，捨不得讓這
場夢醒來，但，天下無不散的筵席，CESL 為我們舉辦一場結業式，頒發結業證
書給我們，那天是星期五，星期六我們離開卡本戴爾前往 St.Louis 的飯店休息，
星期天搭早上的班機開始了返台的漫長航行。飛機起飛時，我在心裡說:『下次
見了，美國。』

I made a long dream that day, I carried my luggage arrived at Taoyuan
International Airport. After more than ten hours of flight, we finally arrived in Los
Angeles where the first stop . When we were waiting for the custom, my heart was
fulled of tension, and faced the customer’s questions. Fortunately, they didn’t asked
too difficult problems, and also chat on me about my coat , he said to me :”Welcome
to America! Have a nice trip!”
Though we seem a bit tired because of the long-time flight, but we still went out
to the next petrol station supermarket to buy dinner. Supermarket is different from
Taiwan's convenient stores ! There is no rice balls or sandwiches or hot dogs, just
only has submarines, lettuce salad, cold drinks Cabinet beer and carbonated
beverages are the majority, either juice or other unknown things. Backed to hotel ,
fist we should be tired and go to bed rapidly, but the spirit is exception sober, until at
three o'clock in the morning. It’s helpful to wake up in two hours, but about five
o’clock hotel could not supply the breakfast, and their TV program only listening to
understand speech ,I rarely couldn’t understand words to connection what’s they
meant; until at six o'clock more, downstairs eat breakfast ! To eat breakfast three
days in same meat that is really greasy, the food is either too salty or too sweet.
Heard we was in St. Louis until July 1 we need to moved for school
accommodation.So we waste two days to take link with Metro , seems to is MRT of
feeling, however, there’s tickets machine, let we deterred suddenly, but to see into
others directly, we also followed into. The trip was to go to TA which described the
local shopping mall, but it was not shown in the guide-map, we did not know which
way to go, subsequently, through chance encounters which brought us into our
destination-Galleria. After returned to the hotel for dinner, it meant the one day's
tourist over. The tomorrow morning, we sat together to discuss the trip yesterday
and decide to go to the urban areas to visit the Church, but later become the mode
of thought which went to. We walk into the city slowly, the Supermarket looked
around, as we wanted a baseball stadium, we saw it is as a whole !
United States’ weather is more hot than expected , it’s really heat me very much,
over 100 degrees every day, walking down the road that the entire people have to
burn up, but the indoor temperature is cool to wear the coat. That is the difference
really.
As checking out in the morning of the third day , we were waiting for TA to come
to meet us, after about two hours by car, arrived at our home in next month, we
have a small living room and a small kitchen, a small bathroom, brand new beds. Our
TA named of Kristi, he controlled our buying livelihood supplies as we went to the
Wall-mart, then night we came to hospitality family enjoy welcomes dinner,
hospitality we of is one teaches of female teacher, husband is Taiwan people, day
night she Cook has rice and the stew pork, makes we line early in first days on stand
American food of child were couldn't help cheers and moved was burst into tears,
after all, American staples are not rice and pork!
After checking out in the morning of the third day,we wait for our TA to come to
meet us. Then,about two hours passed,we arrived at our apartment, having a small
living room, small kitchen, small bathroom,and brand new beds. Our TA’s name is
Kristi who bring us to Wal-mart to buy some supplies we need, then we go to
hospitality family and very enjoy the welcome dinner, the hostess is a teacher in
CESL,her husband is from Taiwan. She Cooked white rice and the stew pork, it makes
us couldn't help cheers. After all, American staples are not rice and pork!
First day at Southern Illinois University, we have to participate in the placement
test. At noon,we eat pizza and a very sweet chocolate chip cookies ,at the same time,
we listen to those teachers introduced themselves in the Auditorium, we are not
classes in the University, but is a language centres in university. CESL's full name is”
Center for English as a Second Language”.
Until I experience American education only knows why people always said that
Taiwan’s education defects. I like those teachers’ style, although every day they are
give me lots of homeworks.But that is enrich my life. I also like to chat with teachers,
although my vocabulary is limited. Sometimes, it may has a bad communication but
teachers are very patience, even my grammar is wrong, they still know that what I
wants to express .When it comes to the homework, they are more focused on
whether you have done, maybe you have many errors, grammatical correctness,
immediately check there for class homework, perhaps only after a review. Typically
one to four courses from eight o'clock in the morning, the latest at around three
o'clock in the afternoon, Friday only until noon. Timetable in accordance with the
distribution of each class to another. CESL I saw an amazing sight, 80% students from
Arab countries,CESL is small class, each class is about 12~14 people. In my class total
10 students, one from China, two from Taiwan, the rest are Arabs. Other classes
should be more or less. At first, the accent difficult to understand of Arabs, teachers
chould understand that is to admire me. In fact, listening to long also began to
understand what they say, everyone is getting familiar,class atmosphere is very fun,
Arab students often make the teachers smile, also said that some ridiculous words
made you laugh.
SIU’s Student Center with bowling, launching bowling only eight dollars in the
afternoon on weekdays, also bundled a copy of specified McDonald's meal. Student
Center is not only bowling and McDonald 's,but also have Starbucks and Chinese
restaurants, and so on. The most special is their Council actually trafficking in large
amounts of commodity around the Southern Illinois University, you can see almost
sell everything from clothes to pants are printed on the abbreviation of the
University of Southern Illinois, SIU. Even the book store in the street have sold that,
it makes me an eye-opener ! In the United States without a car is no feet ! We deep
experience has this sentence words. We usually using the time after class go to
Wal-mart to buy somethings we demand by bus.Taking to Wal-mart about 15
minutes , but from there taking back is to 50 minutes. Because the bus is one-way,
it’s mean that around a ring. So that is a big trouble, sometimes the situation isn’t
allow us to waste the time,we chose to take a taxi. When it comes to America taxi
has a great different from Taiwan’s taxi, just ask the driver how much it costs to get
there.With a focus on ! You have to add a tip to the driver. United States tipping
culture is really makes us a great sense of overwhelm and prices higher than Taiwan,
plus 0.08% taxes, let's say a dollar commodity, and finally you have to pay 1.08
dollars. Originally ,we thought the tax could rebates, after searching the Internet
reveals that is not every local rebates, Illinois is not one of them .
Every weekend CESL and Kristi have arranged for our activities, like go to the
Water Park, and watch the baseball game at the court, the very atmosphere of
restaurant, open-air concerts, schools within Lake boating and KTV ,CESL also hold a
one day tour in St. Louis during the second week, inviting all of CESL students to
participate in, but only few person come from Brazil , Arab combined with us, Brazil
people not only laugh but also waved their national flag and sing louderly, Arabs to
be the next, immediately after they, bustling in the car all the way, very happy!
Actually, CESL’s courses, a period is six weeks, but I-SHOU only give us four week,
this is a little bitt unfortunately , because we are want to finish this term and I need
more time to learn English well. At first, I think a month is very long,but it become
that I feel a month is too short, I reluctant left this small town, even it too hot to
aford , and traffic also is not convenient, but I can say the memories in Carbondale is
the best in my life.Someone said everything seems like a dream.The same feeling to
me!CESL held a graduation for us, issued graduated certificate to us on the last
Friday. Saturday we left Carbondale to St.Louis ‘s hotel. Sunday morning ,our flight
began returning to Taiwan for long time. When the plane took off, I said :"See you
next time, United States.”

當我看到此獎金錄取的榜單，那時的心情有說不出的喜悅，因為打從我進義守大
學，申請學海獎學金是我的第一個目標，因為有申請資格的限制，若我想要取得
申請資格，只能透過班上成績前百分之十來獲得，所以為了此筆獎學金唯有在課
業和英文能力比其他同學更努力我才有機會申請得到，這樣得結果，間接地告訴
我，我做到了！
我沒有出過國，我沒有搭過飛機，如今機票到手，從小晚上做夢要搭飛機，
但每當要飛起的那剎那都會醒來！這次搭飛機的夢不用等到晚上，就在下午四點
四十分，中華航空ＣＩ００６來為我圓夢，不會被吵醒，心中有不出的期待，搭
上飛機有堪稱世界ＴＯＰ１０的空姐為我們服務，就這樣飛到從小聽到大，外婆
口中所嚮往的「米國」，展開一段令人期待興奮的旅程。
一、聖路易自由行兩日遊
經過十幾小時的飛行時間，從台北時間的六月二十八日開始到了美國時間的
六月二十八日這樣的特別經驗是我曾未有過的經驗，到了聖路易已經晚上十
一點多我與團員們肚子非常地餓，詢問了房務人員，他說外面的加油站有賣
吃的，心中充滿著疑惑，加油站為什麼會賣吃的？存疑惑的心跟著團員的腳
步，到了加油站，原來美國的加油站採自助加油，而著在每家加油站都有著
一間類似便利商店的超商的商店。我們於是開始尋找我們所需的糧食，懷念
的樂事和多力多滋，美國的ｓｉｚｅ真的比台灣大好多，但物佳真的是讓我
們很難承受的住。
存在一點時差的我們還是睡不太著，期待著接下來一個月的美國生活，也擔
憂著自己的英文能力深怕無法應付，於是早上我就開始我們在聖路易兩天的
自助旅行，經過校方的來信，他們建議我們去一個 Shopping mall，我們從旅
館出發，做接駁車到地鐵站，在買票的同時我們發現他們只有自動收銀機沒
有服務人員，更特別的是沒有檢票人員，讓我覺得這是我們該學習的地方，
因為人民有好的素質，而減少了人力成本，而我們花太多時間在處理票務公
平的問題，進而增加社回成本，開放式的車站，自由選擇使用車票得使用長
度，因使用者不投機取巧，相信使用者搭車有種不一樣的氛圍。在台灣我們
學校就有一間堪稱全亞洲最大的Ｏutlet mall，但是到了那簡直是小巫見大巫，
程度還是有差。
二、前進卡本戴爾（Carbondale）
兩天的聖路易旅遊，終於學校的人要來接我們去學校了，期待已久的英文學
習即將開始，有種既期待又怕受傷害的感覺，當 Kristi 年輕又有活力的熱情
來接我們，那時對去學校的恐懼減少了許多，我們就這樣來到了，我們首晚
到 SARA 家吃飯，他先生是台灣人，有種莫名的親切，桌上準備了簡單的豬
排，和炒飯，看到這道菜心中有種說不出的感動，因為好久沒有吃到飯，而
在上課期間，我們遇到一個台灣人 Abbie 開了一家牛肉麵館，真的很好吃，
而他人真的很幫助我們有時還會在我們去 Wallmart，還借我們電鍋煮我們最
懷念的米飯，還有其他人際我們的家具，讓我感受到南伊利諾大學對我們的
熱情與照顧。
三、住宿
我們住在離學校步行需要二十分鐘的公寓，可能我曾未在外承租宿舍，所以
才會覺得一到公寓，他只發給我們床，而網路申請的問題出現一些問題，那
時發現我們如果沒有網路的生活那生活會失去重心，而我們男女雖各自睡在
不同樓層但吃飯寫作業都在同一個客廳，聊聊生活中的趣事或功課，我們來
自不同的系，但因為在沒有網路的日子裏，我們組織了一個家庭的樣子，沒
天一回家就是滔滔不絕分享今天的事，雖然有時會吵架，但是學會彼此包容，
就像家人一樣互相照顧，聊天聊地，分享在義守在南伊大的生活讀書模式，
還有最有趣就是因為物價的關係，我們都在家裡自己煮，每次到了烹飪時間
就會感受到家的感覺！
四、學校
南伊利諾大學的校園實在太廣，有美式足球場、棒球場、健身房、學生中
心…… 許多地方，重點還有環湖大約三到四公里的湖，讓我驚覺到原來這
才叫做「大學」，而我覺得雙方大學校園不一樣的地方除了大小之外，我很
欣賞他們的大學生很愛運動，到了下午許多大學生會騎著單車在路上或是換
了慢跑裝在開始路跑，而學校的健身房就更不用說了，都很多人，我覺得我
們台灣的大學生是真的放棄身邊的線上遊戲，好好的運動，因為我發覺美國
的大學生不只高，且幾乎大家身材都很好可能是因為要保持好的身材來吸引
異性吧！
五、課程
我們就讀的事南伊利諾大學的ＣＥＳＬ，在入學時會有ＴＯＥＦＬ－ＩＴＰ
的考試，再利用此次的考試來評定你的等級，ＣＥＳＬ裡總共有七個等級，
通常我們的英文程度都從三到五級左右，而我被編入在三級，心裡有些沮喪，
但因團長的一席話，可能我的能力高過於此等級，但這次遊學團的機會是讓
我們去有機會增廣見聞，有一個環境去說英文，還有結識國際生來拓展人脈，
而在上課時的風格跟台灣有很大的差異，美國老師喜歡丟問題讓大家討論去
想去回答，台灣是我們的老師都說因為答案而教學，而美國老師的這樣的教
法讓我需要把握機會在討論時勇於發表意見訓練自己的口說，而因為我的能
力略贏其他學生，每當我發表我的意見時，大家都會停下來聽我說我的意見
和想法，增加了許多信心，這樣讓我變得很敢講，進而同學們也很喜歡我，
開始跟我聊天，我也因為這樣認識了許多朋友，而每天幾乎都有聽說讀寫，
也因暑期密集班，課程較為密集，功課也隨這變多，每天都有作業要做，有
時可能隔天還要口頭報告，而美國老師們都很在意遲到和作業的完成率，經
過這樣一個月訓練，也讓我對於說英文也比較部會那麼有壓力。
六、飲食
我很強烈建議大家到ＷＡＬＬＭＡＲＴ買材料，之後早餐和中餐一起做，這
樣會很省！
七、旅遊
我印想深刻就是去聖路易的ＡＲＣＨ的旅遊，從上往下俯衝兩邊分別密蘇里
州和伊利諾州有鄉村和城市之感，還有另一個印象深刻的地方就是去
ＳＵＰＥＲ ＭＡＮ的家鄉拍照，還參觀他的博物館也是另外一種體驗，讓
我了解從小聽到大超人！
八、拓展視野與未來展望
很快的一個月就這樣過去了，因為我這一個月全心全意地投入在ＣＥＳＬ的
課程，也結交了許多來自不同國家的朋友，而在上課的過程中我覺得在過去
十年英文學習是失敗的，因為我們所背的單字在生活中都無法運用在生活中，
而國外的教學方式是我非常喜歡的，因為讓我知道學習是從思考而獲得的答
案而不是因為答案就是答案，有位資深的老師說了一句話點破了我心中那份
在離開時的感傷，他說：「我們這一個月是成功的，不是因為我們在課堂上
拿了高分或背了幾個單字，我們的成功是在於我們是利用英文成功的生活了
一個月！」我很認同這句話，語言是拿來用的，而不是拿來考試的，很感謝
學校給我這樣的機會讓我去拓展自己的視野，也讓我想去國外念研究所而去
拚一把！

qualification, only through class Shang results 10% to obtained, so to this pen
scholarship only has in coursework and English capacity than other students more
efforts I is opportunities applications are, so was results, indirect to told I, I did it !
I have not been abroad, and I did not take the plane, tickets now available, from
childhood dream to fly at night, but whenever you want to fly the moment of wake

我終於可以出國了，這對以前的我來說，只是一個遙不可及的夢，但是我做
到了，靠我自己的力量，得到了一個難得的機會出國學習，一方面不花家裡太多
的錢，另一方面又能讓家人感到驕傲，這才發現之前自己的努力有了結果，雖
然犧牲了玩樂的時間，但這一切是值得的，於是開始對這難得的機會充滿期
待，期待著一個與別人不一樣的暑假。當學海遊學團名單公佈到搭上飛機這期
間，很不實際，重複想著是不是在作夢、這一切是不是真的？但直到飛機起飛耳
鳴的那一刻，我醒了 ！原來這一切不是夢，因為我正踏上一段充滿冒險的旅
程。這是第一次離開家離開台灣，這距離不是台北到高雄，而是到了和我出生
地相差一萬多公里的美國。在我到達 Carbondale 之前，恐懼多過於我對所有事
情的期待，這一切對我來說很陌生、害怕語言溝通不良，加上時差的問題，幾
乎呈現失眠的狀態。在 ST. Louis 的飯店呆了三個晚上後，TA 接我們到了學校安
排的宿舍，然後到 Wal-mart 買日常用品，看著只有簡單家具的宿舍，心想：這
一切開始了。

剛開始對一切好失望，心裡想著為什麼要來這裡？別人在家裡過著茶來身
飯來張口的暑假生活，而我在這裡卻要考試、上課、自己打理所有的事情、宿
舍沒有網路、天氣好熱、東西好貴……好多好多的抱怨在心裡，這才發現我太
像溫室裡的花朵，在台灣還自以為很獨立，其實自己多怕麻煩。在開始上課之
前，TA 就告訴我們說同學都是阿拉伯人，而且上課都很積極參與，所以我們必
須勇敢的舉手發言，才有可能讓老師注意到我們，所以第一週的上課挫折感很
大，因為在台灣儘管我們花了很多時間在被英文單字或聽英語廣播，到這裡真
的不管用，因為我們都害怕開口說英文，但是在美國上課所注重的就是討論，
這時真的覺得我輸阿拉伯人很多，就算上課內容簡單，但害怕說英文就是最大
的敗筆。但是接著因為要分組討論的關係，開始認識同班同學，在這學習最好
的地方就是小班制，老師很容易照顧到每一個人，認識同學後其實發現大家人
都很好，很愛開玩笑也會對不同國家的人充滿好奇，而且也因為是小班制的關
係，大家都會照顧彼此就像一家人一樣團結，尤其是在遇到老師生日的時候，
大家都會帶著零食餅乾或親手做點心帶到課堂上給老師驚喜。在經過這段時間
相處後，很難去形容與同學之間的情感，尤其是在他們知道我們即將離開的時
候，大家臉上的不捨依稀還記得，這份感覺是在台灣沒有的，在那裡是快樂的
學習互相幫助，但在台灣因為過度競爭其實都忘記真正友情的意義是什麼。
另一段特別的緣分存在因為學海遊學團才互相認識的隊友們。大家幾乎都
來自不同科系，所以在離開台灣那天，才真的知道我要跟誰一起出國，但可能
也因為清楚的知道接下來的一個月我們必須互相幫忙，所以只花極短的時間認
識且信任彼此。在這一個月裡大家就像家人一樣照顧著對方，在美國因為書籍
很貴，所以大家會互相幫忙去借課本省錢，放學後誰先到家就會煮飯等著其他
人到家，也因為剛開始的時候宿舍沒有網路，所以幾乎每個晚上在固定時間，
大家會帶著作業然後聚在一起討論、聊著一天下來發生的事、聊著大家的過去
分享彼此的夢想。每個人都擅長於不同領域，但在美國大家都拋開了那份框
架，一起快樂的學習英語，在拋開台灣的思維模式之後，大家變的更主動的學
習所有事情。這個月難忘的地方是.......這份情感更甚於在台灣同班的大學同
學，不僅如此，我們更像一家人。
我們真的很幸運在這裡能夠得到很多老師及朋友的幫忙，畢竟我們是身處
在比較鄉下的地區，在這裡認識了些亞洲人會互相幫忙幫我們解決問題，但也最
該感謝我們的 TA ,Kristi，只要我們有問題，他就會出現，而且每周末都會帶我
們出去玩，很難形容對他的那份感情。他像朋友帶我們到處玩，像媽媽一樣的照
顧我們，我們也總是開玩笑的稱呼他為 Mommy 而他也說他有了 10 個小孩，他
很年輕也很漂亮，更有好廚藝，所以這個月很幸福，因為受到他的照顧。另外他
也很熱情的在一開始就介紹了他的朋友，所以接下來的行程一路上總是很熱鬧
且充滿笑聲，而他也會教我們說一些當地的流行語，很有趣。從第一週到第三週
我們到過了 water park、ST. Louis Arch、Mill Mall、Superman Statue、打保齡
球、當地的酒莊、Bar、KTV、看球賽，還有一樣我很喜歡的活動就是當地每週
四下午的 Sunset Concert，在那裡不只有樂團表演，而且去到那裡也都很同意遇
到學校老師與同學，大家會帶著椅子、啤酒、點心等等的，就像是大家聚在一起
聊天、玩遊戲、甚至是會看到有人在練雜耍，他們總是很熱情的參予當地的活
動，而且在課堂上的師生關係，一下了課大家真的都是朋友，喝酒聊天都是很
平常的事。我們還有到當得的電影院看 The Ted，沒有字幕的電影，大家當做練
習英文聽力來看，當地的 Bar 其實跟台灣的差很多，如果你想聊天可以在室內
吹冷氣，若你想跳舞則可以選擇室外，而且重點是只要走五分鐘的路途就可以
到了，而且相較於台灣，是比較安全的。很充實的一個月，不僅是體驗了當地生
活，這真的是一趟邊玩邊學習的旅程。
人生總是在真正體驗過後，才了解真正的道理。在台灣學英文是為了考
試，我們都忘記了學語言可以是一件快樂的事，就像我們在那裡會積極學好英
文的動力不只是想參與課堂上每一次的小遊戲，還有一個很重要的是你必須學
好英文，才能結交不同國家的朋友，因為一個月的時間很短，所以一有機會就
會開口說英文，拋開了對開口說英文的畏懼，畢竟沒有人在意你文法對錯。以
前會對那些出國唸書的人充滿疑問，好奇的是到哪唸書不是都一樣，只要認真
就好，但是這個月我真的找回學習可以是很快樂的那份感覺。再那裡的每一天
都很充實，因為心理很清楚的知道只有一個月，所以不能浪費，每一個決定都
很重要，因為這是一個夢想、一個回憶，要永遠永遠放在腦海裡，雖然說回台
灣後真的無法表達那份感覺，但這很像一場夢，誰都不想醒過來。
在那裡最後一天的上課我害怕看到所有的同學跟老師，因為不只是我們難
過，他們也不捨，所以很怕自己哭出來，就連同學和老師寫給我們的卡片，也
只敢等到一個人的時候才敢打開來看，卡片內容很有趣，因為很容易就發現同
學拼字及文法的錯誤，可是裡頭的祝福卻是很真誠。上課結束後，學校也替我
們辦了小小的歡送會，所有敎過我們的老師幾乎都來了，而我代表所有人上台
用英文分享我們這一個月來的心得，當我手上拿個演講稿站在講台的那一刻，
我看著底下的同學以及老師，心裡有股說不出來的機動湧上心頭，於是我開始
了我的心得分享，那一刻是真實的，因為我聽到了掌聲與笑聲。當我聽到那些
老師在結束後跟我說我真的進步很多的時候，我哭了出來，這不是難過，這是
一份我無法用文字形容的感動，我做到了，而且我也讓交過我的老師感到驕
傲，不僅僅是我開口把演講完成了，那幾分鐘裡有所有一個月來對他們的感
情、還有這些日子以來我學過的英文，因為我想讓老師知道我真的學到了。
很想再讓時間倒轉回到那時候，很想再努力一次回去那裏和大家相聚，每天
每天都很想念大家，但是我深深的了解，就會我再回到那地方，景物依舊人事也
已全非，這份感動與短短一個月所體驗到的，我會深深放在心裡面，不會忘記。
最後，很感謝義守大學提供這項獎學金，若沒有這個機會，我不知道要存錢存到
甚麼時候才能出國拓展視野，這真的是很難用言語形容的感動，這個月，會是我
人生中最難忘的。

學海遊學團心得(SIUC)
At the first, I am very appreciating I-SHOU university give me an opportunity to go to the US
to learn English and experience the different life style. Now, I want to share an experience for you. I
was on behalf of all to make a presentation at the last day we in CESL. This text expresses the
feelings to that month I stayed in Carbondale.
I am study in I-SHOU University. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to become
part of CESL. Time flies, this is the fourth week we stay in Carbondale, and we are going to
leave here tomorrow. When we just arrived here, we did no adapt, and we were homesick. But
we were very lucky because we got help from many people. Here really like a family, not just
with my group members, everyone regardless of nationality and take care of each other. We
are very blissful because many teachers take care of us.
In Taiwan, we just learn English for test, even if we get a high score, we still afraid of
speaking English. But in this month, we study in CESL and every teacher makes us improve
our English. So now, we are not feeling stressed in learning English. We become more active to
learn English because we want to make new friends from different countries. So, every day we
look forward to going to school. Here have a good environment to learn and every scene is
very beautiful, makes us like in a dream. At this moment, I stand on the stage, I still like in a
dream, and it is really wonderful.
Now, we want to thank for all of teachers who taught us. We all love you and learned a lot
from you. Because you make us understand learning English is can be happier. I really want
to stay here. I wish I can have the opportunity to be able to come back here again. I think I
am not only remembering the scenery on top of Arch but the life in SIU. I want to say
Carbondale is very hot, but the everything in here always touches my heart.
I get a rare opportunity to study abroad that made me like in a dream. On the one hand, I
will not spend the money that earned from my parents. On the other hand, my family can be proud
of me. Until I got this good news, I felt every effort were worth for me, although I expended of time
to play. I began looking forward to this unique opportunity to look forward to a summer vacation is
not the same with others.
Since school announced the list that got the scholarship until I went to the airport, it was a
dream for me. But it was until the moment I felt tinnitus when the airplane took off, I woke up!
It turned out that this was not a dream, because I was to embark on the journey full of adventure.
This is the first time I leave my hometown, leave Taiwan. This distance is not Taipei to Kaohsiung,
but to a difference of more than ten thousand kilometers from the place I was to be born. But before
I arrived to Carbondale, the fear was more than I expect of all things. All of the everything was very
strange for me. I was fear of use poor English skill to communicate, had the problem of jet lag and
almost insomnia. We stayed in Drury Inn in ST. Louis for three days and we took the metro link to
play around. This was a experience for us to learn English when we took a trip. After 3 days, our TA
picks us up to the dormitory, and then went to Wal-Mart to buy daily necessities.
At that moment, looked those simple furniture, I thought: it all started. At the beginning, I felt
disappointed and thinking why I come here? My friends all enjoy their summer vacation in Taiwan,
but I have examinations, walk to CESL, and take care of everything by myself, our dormitory did
not have network and the weather was so hot. I had a lot of complain at that time. In the past, I felt I
was very independent in Taiwan. At that time, everything is different.
Let's talk about the school life in here at first. Before the beginning of the class, our TA told us
most of our classmates are Arabic, and they have high participation in class. So, we must be brave
to raised our hands to speak in order to let teacher noticed us. Although we spend a lot of time in
recited vocabulary and listen the ICRT in Taiwan, the first week we felt frustrated because we are
afraid to speak English. In the United States, to discuss and participate are more important than
other skill. Even if the class content is very easy for me, but afraid to speak English is the biggest
flaw. That made me felt I am a loser. But then because we need to make a group to discuss, we
begin to get acquainted with our classmates. The best place to learn in the small class size is the
teacher can easy to take care of everyone. After we acquainted our classmates, we found they are
very kind, like to joke and have curious to the people who came from different country with them.
On the other hand, we took care of each other like a family, especially when experiencing teacher's
birthday. Everyone took or made snacks to the class and made surprise for our teacher. After this
period, that is difficult to describe the emotions between ours, especially when they know that we
just stay there for a month and we will leave. I still remember the dismay on their face. This is a big
different with we were in Taiwan. We learned about learning is not only can be fun, but also can
help each other. In Taiwan, because of competition, we forget what the meaning of friendship is.
Then, talk about the special fate. Because of we got this scholarship, we met each other. We
major in different departments in Taiwan, but we just spent a few days to trust each other. In this
month, we like a family to take care of each other. Every day we walk to school together. After
school, we cook and eat dinner together. After dinner, we discuss our homework and chatting.
Everyone is good at different fields, and share our dreams.
We learning English happily not like in Taiwan, and also become a more active learning everything.
The most unforgettable in this month is the friendship that closer than the friendship with the
classmates in Taiwan.
We were very lucky in there because we got the help from many teachers and friends. But the
important thing is we need to thank our TA, Kristi. As long as we have problem, she appear. On
every weekend, she like our mother pick up us and went out to play. We usually call her Mommy
and she also said that she have 10 children. She is very young and beautiful. In addition, she is also
very enthusiastic to introduce his friend for us. From the first week to the third week we have been
to the water park, S.T. Louis Arch, Mill Mall, Superman Statue, bowling, local wineries, Bar, KTV,
watch the game. I love the local activities on every Thursday afternoon, Sunset Concert. Not only
have band and music, but encounter with teachers and classmates there. In there, everybody bring
chairs, beer, snack, and so on. We get together to chat, play games. Everybody who live in there are
very enthusiastic to participate in local activities. The relationship between teachers and students in
the classroom, after class we are like friends to drink and chat together. We also went to see a
popular movie, The Ted, in the local cinema. We experience the local life and fell in love with there,
although there is not a big city.
After experience the life style in Carbondale, it made me learn a lot. In Taiwan, we learn
English just for test, and we always forget learning language can be interesting. In there, we have a
lot of motivation to learn English. First, we want to join every game during the class. Second, in
order to make new friends. No matter how the grammar we use, we put the fear away to speak
English. Because I know we only have one month to stay there, as the proverb says Time is money.
I do not want to waste any time and keep the every moment in mind. This is a dream since I was a
child and I am really appreciated to have this opportunity. Although I am back to Taiwan, I still
cannot to express the feeling. This is like a dream; no one wanted to wake up.
彷彿是幾天前的事，在六月二十七號晚上忙著收拾行李與複雜的心情，準備
前往美洲大陸，展開一個月的旅程。
第一次搭飛機、第一次離開台灣，這對我而言是非常難得的經歷，從未出過
國的我，一下子竟然要飛到美國去，在興奮之餘仍夾雜著緊張與不安，雖然從高
中就在外住宿，但是離家一個月，並且是到語言、習俗和生活習慣完全不同的地
方，對我而言是一大挑戰。
六月二十八號一早，提著擔心超重的行李在高鐵站與完全不認識，但接下來
又要相處一個月的同學集合，帶著緊張不安的心情搭著高鐵、掛行李、搭往第二
航廈的巴士，在學校老師與旅行社的叮嚀下，我們出了海關、等待稍微延遲飛機，
準備出發至期待已久的美國。
經過約十三個小時的航程，我們來到了洛杉磯，長時間的排隊並使用顫抖的
英文簡單面談、領行李、掛行李、登機，過程中大家像無頭蒼蠅，匆匆忙忙的尋
找，差點趕不上飛機，幸好有同學鎮定的處理和工作人員的熱心幫助，不然可能
就要露宿機場了。等到坐上飛往聖路易的飛機後，才能放心期待接下來的生活。
在飛機上補眠之後，終於來到了位於密蘇里州的聖路易，大家帶著疲憊的身
軀搭乘接駁車，到達飯店放置好行李之後便詢問旅館櫃台人員得知可以購買食物
的店家，在只有汽車呼嘯聲的夜晚步行至鄰近加油站的便利商店購物，而這是我
們來到美國後第一次逛當地店家，感覺相當新鮮，在裡面逛了不少時間，買完東
西後，接下來所面臨的就是惱人的錢幣，要認清楚這些零錢真的必須花點時間。
隔天一早，大家吃完免費的道地西式早餐後，便討論接下來的行程，而電視
氣象報導所顯示的溫度也是我們考慮的重點之一，在簡單整理之後，接著便展開
第一天之聖路易自由行。我們搭乘跟前晚一樣的接駁車回了機場，再轉搭 Metro
Link 前往預定目的地“Galleria”，Metro Link 類似台灣的捷運，但幾乎每一站都只
有簡陋的月台，沒有任何需要車票才能通行的地方，也幾乎沒有驗票的人員，由
此可見，美國的確是一個注重自我管理以及誠實的國家。Galleria 類似台灣的百
貨公司，在擺脫帶路的中年男子之後，我們便開始享受購物的樂趣。晚上則是回
到旅館，享用旅館所提供的晚餐。
第二天的聖路易自由行，我們逛了很多地方，一樣吃完早餐、搭 Metro Link，
預定目的地為當地教堂與 The Union Station，在找尋教堂的路上，發現了一間超
市，大家簡單購買少許生活用品之後，就滿足的繼續尋找教堂，我們東竄西找，
有成功找到教堂，但是大門緊閉，只能跟它拍照並繼續往下一個目標前進了。在
去 The Union Station 的路上，我們吃了價格有點驚人的午餐、走進去 City Museum
又走出來、在門外窺探聖路易紅雀隊的比賽現場，最後也抵達目的地，在 The
Union Station 還誤闖婚禮現場，我們十個人帶著尷尬的笑容，默默的經過，不小
心被那美麗的禮堂吸引過去，傍晚則又趕回旅館享用晚餐。

第三天一早，便帶著行李在大廳等待，準備離開聖路易，等到來接待我們的
老師 Kristi 出現之後，我們一群人便坐上車，開始約兩個半小時的路程。一路上，
窗外的風景愈來愈有鄉村的感覺，在這稍嫌枯燥的田野中，眼皮不禁闔上。最後
終於到達接下來要住四個禮拜的公寓，一打開門，裡面空無一物，讓我們有點錯
愕，而接下來老師帶我們去期待已久的 Wal-Mart 購物，裡面應有盡有，大家瘋
狂採購食材以及日常生活用品，提著大包小包回家，滿足的回到公寓。
而接下來在美國的大部分時間幾乎都是在學校上課，每天必須早起、頂著熾
熱的太陽徒步走約二十分鐘。第一天由老師帶著我們走，一開始的托福考試相當
累人，好不容易熬過了，接下來便是學校所舉辦的新生歡迎會，禮堂聚集了來自
世界各地的人，熱情的巴西人還邀請大家一起拍照，第一次與這麼多外國人相處，
感覺相當奇妙。然而，在吃完披薩之後，又有考試了，這次是寫作測驗，熬完之
後便又頂著熾熱的太陽走回公寓，準備正式上課。隔天一早，各自拿到課表之後
就開始正式的課程，每個人總共有四種課程，我個人的部分為核心、聽力與口說、
文化、寫作。
這裡的老師上課方式與台灣有相當大的差異，他們非常鼓勵學生提出自己的
看法與意見，而我所遇到的四位老師則各自有其特色。核心課程的老師來自宏都
拉斯，有別於對中南美洲熱情奔放的印象，她的行為舉止相當優雅，而她熱心的
舉動令我難以忘懷，就在我和同學煩惱昂貴的課本時，她帶著我們四處奔波，開
車帶我們到其他店家詢問，最後還幫我們在網路上刷卡訂書。聽力與口說的老師
比較嚴厲，規定每天的作業必須準時繳交，常常與班上的同學意見有所不同，在
一陣嚴厲的辯談之後，便帶的微笑說“Be smile”，氣氛相當詭譎，但仍不得不佩
服她多變的教學方式。寫作的老師年紀相當輕，大我約四歲而已，她的教學方式
讓我們相當喜歡，常常以周邊的題材切入寫作，以輕鬆活潑的教學方式打破苦悶
的寫作課程。文化課程的老師上課的氣氛相當熱鬧，幾乎每堂課都會提供餅乾巧
克力，也會帶著我們玩遊戲。
我們班的同學大部分皆來自沙烏地阿拉伯，他們上課非常積極，對我們也非
常和善，但由於他們的口音與我們的差異，所以常常會有溝通上的障礙，透過與
他們的相處，也讓我了解阿拉伯的文化，尤其是宗教，其中最讓我難以接受的就
是「齋戒月」，他們只能在日落之後吃東西，甚至是喝水，每天約十六個小時無
法進食真是一大挑戰，而且還必須持續一個月。除了來自阿拉伯的同學之外，我
們班上還有一位來自哥倫比亞的女生，她相當熱情，第一次見面就主動的和我們
打招呼。
在美國上課最艱難的部分為聽和說，要完全專注並理解全部的內容真是一大
挑戰，反觀單字與文法的部分，一個禮拜所教的單字數量大約為台灣教育一天的
量，上課並不是只有老師單方面的教學，老師常常要求我們在課堂上討論，討論

的內容也不只侷限於課本。考試的部分，對我而言最難的部分為分組對話測驗，
要與同學們順暢溝通真的非常不容易，但經過幾次的測驗之後，確實能有效改善
使用英文溝通的緊張與不安。
除了上課之外，休閒娛樂當然也不能少，我們常搭公車到附近逛逛，學校每
周四也都會舉辦戶外音樂會，體驗坐在草皮上享受音樂的優閒。除此之外，開始
正式上課的第二天就遇到美國的國慶日，老師帶我們去看棒球比賽，享受在電視
上收看所沒有的臨場感。週六帶我們去 Water park 消暑，晚上則帶我們體驗當地
的酒吧。之後的假日老師也都會安排不一樣的行程，例如到著名酒莊 Walker’s
Bluff 、超人故鄉 Metropolis 等附近有名的景點。
不知不覺，一個月就過去了。美好的時光總是特別快，不由得又有點小小的
感傷。這次的旅行除了體驗到美國當地的生活之外，也透過來自世界各地的人認
識了各國有趣的文化，一個月的美國之旅讓我盡情品嘗以前只能透過電視或網路
才能看到的人事物。但是，過完一個月後就必須離開，離開相處一個月的人、事
與物，最後一天我們又回到最初抵達時所住的旅館、所逛的百貨公司，雖然相當
不捨，但仍必須面對現實，再次抵達聖路易機場，帶著沉重的心情踏上路程。
不過，我知道旅程的結束不應該是這樣的心態，在體驗過異國生活之後，我
應該用更珍惜的心情去面對一切，帶著滿滿的回憶繼續努力。

It was a dream that I got the chance to go abroad. When I was a
freshman, I was on the waiting list. I felt very disappointed and determined to
get the scholarship to go abroad next year. Finally, it was real that I got the
scholarship and had about to set off to the United States for a month.
In the evening of June 27, I was busy in packing up the luggage and my
complicated feelings for the trip. It was my first to take the airplane and leave
Taiwan. It was a very rare experience for me because I never left my country
and the first time was to fly to the United States which is pretty far away from
Taiwan. Besides, the language, customs and habits are completely different. It
was a big challenge for me.
June 28, I went to the airport with my classmates. After complicated
formalities, I boarded the plane and started the trip to the United States. I felt
exciting because it was real that I was sitting inside the airplane. However,
everything was unknown, so I felt more and more nervous.
After a long fight, we arrived in Los Angeles. The first challenge for us
was to do entry formalities. We spent a lot of time to do this work and the
following formalities in order to take another airplane. Fortunately, everything
was well because of enthusiastic staff and calm classmates. Otherwise, we
might miss the airport. Until we boarded the flight to St. Louis, I dared to look
forward to the coming life.
After a short sleep on the plane, we arrived to St. Louis in Missouri. We
took the shuttle bus to the hotel. All of us were tired and hungry, so we went
to the only convenience store which nearby gas station. I felt quite novel
about the store because it was the first time we visited local stores in the
United States. After the shopping, I had to face a new problem, the coin. It
took a lot of time to clear these annoying coins.

The first morning in St. Louis, we had free breakfast which was supplied
by the hotel. The hotel supplied many kinds of western style food including
muffin, biscuits, hamburger meat and others. We enjoyed it a lot because it
was our first breakfast in the United States. After the meal, we got together
and discussed where to go. Although we worried about the hot weather
outside, we still decided to go out and started the trip in St. Louis.
We went to take Metro Link by shuttle bus. On the Metro Link, we met
an old man. He said that he could take us to our destination, Galleria. We were
glad about it. Finally, we got our destination, Galleria. Galleria is a big mall. We
spent many hours in this mall and enjoyed it a lot. After the shopping, we
went back to the hotel and enjoyed free dinner.
The second day in St. Louis, we visited a lot of places. After eating the
same breakfast, we took the Metro Link. We intended to go to local church
and The Union Station. On the way to find the church, we found a
supermarket. We were glad to discover the supermarket, so we spent a few
minutes to purchase some urgent needs of daily necessities. Finally, we
successfully found the church, but the door was closed. We took some
pictures and started to next goal. On the way to The Union Station,
we lunched in a local restaurant. After the expensive lunch, we passed through
City Museum and the St. Louis Cardinals, and then we arrived in The Union
Station. We were tired when we got The Union Station, so we
relaxed by having drinks and sitting in this old station. Until the dinner time,
we turned back to the hotel and enjoyed free dinner.
The next morning, we took the luggage in the hotel lobby and waited. It
was time for us to leave St. Louis. When our teacher Kristi arrived, we started
the trip about two and a half hours. We leaved city, the scenery became more

and more countrified. Most of us couldn’t help falling asleep on the long trip.
Finally, we arrived in Carbondale. When we got into our apartment, I felt a
little disappointed because the living room was empty and I didn’t have
mattress. After a short rest, Kristi took us to go to Wal-Mart. We were happy
to do grocery shopping, so we spent about three hours to buy some
ingredients and daily necessities.
The following days in Carbondale were studying. We spent most of the
time to study. We had to get up early and spent about twenty minutes to walk
to school almost every day. The first day in school, we had a TOEFL test. The
test was quite tiring. Then we joined a welcome ceremony for new students.
The auditorium was full of people from Saudi Arabia, Columbia, France, Brazil
and many other countries. It was the first to get along with so many foreigners,
I felt quite wonderful.
The next morning, we got our own school timetable and started classes.
My personal classes were listening, speaking, culture and writing.
My Core teacher is from Honduras. Before I saw her, I thought that the
people from Central and South America are passion. But her behavior is quite
elegant and grace. I was very moved by what she did. When my classmate and
I were worried the cost of the textbook, she spend time to drive us to other
store in order to help us to find cheaper one. Finally, she booked it on the
Internet and paid by her credit card.
My listening and speaking teacher is strict. She requested that we must
hand in our homework on time. In addition to her strict regulations, her
teaching skills were admirable. My writing teacher is very young.
Her
teaching method is quite freedom. We enjoyed her teaching a lot. My cultural
teacher is also great. What I like most was that she provided cookies and

chocolate almost every class.
Most of the students in my class were from Saudi Arabia. They were
active and outgoing. At first, it was hard for me to understand and
communicate with them because of their accent. However, I enjoyed learning
the culture of Saudi Arabia from them. The most special part of their religion is
Ramadan. They can’t eat or even drink about sixteen hours a day and last one
month. In addition to the classmates from Saudi Arabia, there was a girl from
Colombia. She was quite active and easygoing. She liked to show her own
opinion in every class.
In addition to studying, I enjoyed the entertainments among this
month. We often took the bus to go shopping in our free time. Our teacher
took us to do outside activities on holidays. The first week, she took us to
watching baseball game on National Day of the United States. On the weekend,
she took us to go to the Water Park and local bar. On the other weekends, she
arranged many different activities for us. Besides, the school holds outdoor
concert on every Tuesday. I enjoyed the experience that sitting on the grass
and listening to the music.
Unfortunately a month passed. We had to face the truth that it was time
for us to leave here and back to Taiwan. I felt a little grieved about the leaving.
On this month, I learned a lot and saw many different things and people that I
ever seen on television or the Internet. It was a special experiment for me to
go abroad. I was grateful to have the chance. On the last weekend, we backed
to the same hotel and the same mall as the end of this wonderful trip.
However, I know that the end of a journey should not be such a bad
mood. The experience of living abroad was unforgettable. I should keep
working hard with this memory.

古人云：
「行萬里路勝過讀萬卷書」
，說的是實際經驗遠比書上寫的還要重要。，
每次我去遊歷回來後都有明顯感覺自己更上層樓，所以當我得知我取得這次學海
獎學金的資格時我十分欣喜，因為我知道這將會使我向上提升。這並不是我第一
次出國，也不是第一次去美國，雖然以前去美國是因為要表演順便去旅遊，但這
次是要去交流學習，有去過歐美國家學習過的人都說教學方式非常不一樣。為何
歐美國家可以持續強盛不衰？他們是如何孕育出傑出的學生？就讓我這趟旅程
細細品味發覺！
飛機在跑道上漸漸加速，感受著身體因為速度的增加而壓向椅背，有種要脫
離現在的自己奔向嶄新未來的感覺，讓我既緊張又興奮。看著窗外熟悉的故鄉慢
慢縮小，心中有些許的惆悵。坐飛機對我來說並不陌生，因為在高中畢業後有在
國外生活兩年以及義守大學提供的獎學金，很感謝我的父母以及學校給我這些資
源。不過身旁的同學好像大多都是第一次出國，他們看起來既興奮又緊張，相信
有他們的陪伴這趟旅程一定會非常有趣精彩！
到達聖路易的路途實在很艱辛，十幾個小時的飛機加上轉機，其中還差點趕
不上轉機的班機，讓旅途多了許多驚險與刺激。不過義守英語學習中心的練習還
真的有派上用場，海關問的問題幾乎跟講義上的一模一樣，讓我安心了不少，我
們就照著練習時的句子回答，順利的過了海關。學校所安排的行程讓我們得待在
聖路易自由活動兩天，這段時間自然而然變成我們調時差以及初探美國文化的歷
險。因為我們去的時候是夏天且聖路易屬於大陸型氣候，天氣酷熱異常又非常乾
燥，呼吸起來都有灼熱的感覺，十分不好受，難怪美國這邊的汽水飲料會這麼的
暢銷（觀察當地人的生活及他們的表情，會發現他們沒有冷氣和飲料就會死的感
覺）。在美國這邊的消費都非常的高（不過據說我們住的地方因為頗偏僻，物價
和其他地方比已經算是便宜了），雖然你看價錢都是一兩塊美金，會讓妳感覺很
便宜覺得不買好像對不起自己，但換成台幣後也著實是個不小的數字，應該是因
為美國是第一世界國家，經濟的基礎不同造成基礎的物價也不同，不過也因為美
國商品進口到台灣要抽關稅的關係，在美國買一些大品牌的東西的確比台灣便宜。
飲食的部分美國的食物口味實在有夠重，且食物熱量之高幾乎無法想像，我之前
曾經住在大陸兩年多，覺得大陸的調味非常非常重，沒想到美國的食物甜的就像
要甜死你，鹹的就像是要把你做成醃製品一樣，舉例來說，我們以為是很鹹很濃
稠的醬汁(那是湯)，結果美國人都直接把他裝來喝，我可不希望我會習慣這樣的
口味然後回到台灣覺得台灣的食物都像是在喝水一樣。而且他們沒有廚餘桶也沒
有回收的習慣，所有他們不要的東西幾乎就只有一個命運－被丟到垃圾桶，這讓
我覺得美國人真的很浪費。
兩天後負責接待我們的老師來聖路易接我們去 Carbondale，我們都沒想到老
師會這麼年輕，大概只比我們大幾歲而已，而且她也在 CESL 擔任教學老師。到
學校的路上景色越來越荒涼，四處望去只能看到大片大片的田野，我有聽說學校
在很偏僻的地方，但沒想到會這麼的偏僻(美國地大物博，但也因此有諸多的不
方便，沒有交通工具在美國真的不容易生活，所以才造就他們如此的生習慣)，
而且看到住的地方後我只有一個感想－環堵蕭然！沒有桌子也沒有椅子，房間除
了床以外都空空的，也沒有日光燈，只有一盞小夜燈。當下我只疑惑，這是美國
的生活文化還是我們住的地方太差？所幸老師們有提供一些必要的家具給我們，
不然連要完成回家作業都有問題了。住宿問題解決後接著就是飲食方面了，在美
國想到買生或用品，第一個想到的肯定是 Wal-Mart。Wal-Mart 在美國可說是再偏
僻的鄉村都有的超級市場，也有另一個說法是 Wal-Mart 是窮人在去的，但不知
這到底是褒還是貶了。不過它也真的名不虛傳，裡面的確應有盡有且非常便宜(以
美國的平常生活開銷)，我們購齊了接下來日子的生活用品回到“新家”後，就
準備要迎接正式的交流學習生活了！
第一天是分班考，雖然在出發前就知道會有考試，但完全沒想到題目是用托
福的考題！這令我不知所措，因為我從來沒考過這種大型的英文考試，但也只能
硬著頭皮上了，最後我被分到了 level 4( level 6 結束就可去上大學，level 7 研究
所)，開始了接受全英教學的生活。第一天上課，未知的授課方式、陌生的外國
同學、不熟悉的語言，讓我既不安又興奮，所幸有一位同團同學跟我分到同一班，
兩個人至少有個照應，不懂的時候也可以問，讓我放心不少。第一堂課是核心課
程，進教室的時候我們都非常緊張，陌生的外國面孔、聽不懂的語言，我們兩個
尷尬的找了靠窗戶的位置坐下，等著老師的到來。八點整，老師準時地進了教室，
接著老師要大家自我介紹，我們發現同學幾乎全部都來自於阿拉伯(他們講的英
文有很重的口音，而且講話速度很快)，除了一個女同學是來自哥倫比亞。接著
老師開始發學校規章，不外乎就是上課要準時、不能作弊、成績如何算、老師們
各自的規定等等，但特別有一張上面寫滿了有關抄襲的種種違規，並且嚴格規定
我們不能作弊抄襲，否則會有很嚴重的懲罰，並要我們鄭重簽名（歐美國家對智
慧財產權以及盜版拷貝之類的問題真的非常重視，以前在台灣等亞洲國家感覺完
全沒這方面的問題，但這個心態是個很嚴重的議題）。也正因如此，上課必須的
課本也無法用影印的（因為我們只去一個月，覺得花錢買課本不值得，但老師還
是用很遺憾的口氣跟我們說不能用影印的），我們只好咬著牙把所需的課本全買
了，而且美國的每本書都跟你在台灣看到的原文書價錢差不多（甚至一本薄薄的
學校在用的那種英文課本也要賣 60 元美金），讓我第一個星期就荷包大失血。
至於上課的內容，一開始只覺得為什麼老師要為了這幾個單字就上了整整一
堂課、為何同學問的問題是我們國中時在問的問題、浪費這麼多時間在那些簡單
又沒多大意義的步驟與事情是為了什麼？但後來才發現原來這才是真正的學習
方式，真正去了解每個字詞所含有的意思並知道如何應用，而且你會發現你的同
學可以很習慣的用英文去溝通而且非常流利，但我們則非常害羞，講一句話要在
腦中思考許久。中國式的教育就是讓我們大量記憶，但並不一定了解使用的方法，
歐美式的教育則是讓你清楚了解每個你所學的東西，讓你想忘也忘不掉，而且從
小在中式教育長大下的我們第一次接觸到這種教育方式會覺得很奇怪、很浪費時
間，但經過一段時間後，你絕對會迷上這種學習方式！
剛開始學習還不習慣的時候的時間總是過的特別慢，愛上它之後卻又過的飛
快，不知不覺已經過了四個星期，要離開這塊吸引人的土地了，懷著滿滿的感激
與不捨，我們離開了 Carbondale，在一頓舟車勞頓之後終於搭上了洛杉磯返回台
灣的班機。看著飛機升空，遠離這塊另大眾嚮往的陸地，回想起這一個月的種種，
我學到了如何勇於開口、如何對待異國文化、改正自己的學習方式以及如何獨立。
感謝父母支持我參加學海獎學金、感謝學校提供這個機會、感謝所有教過我的老
師讓我能錄取、感謝所有幫助過我的人……。
飛機著地了，是這塊讓人懷念的溫馨故鄉，看見思念了一個月的親人，雖然
這段短暫的旅程結束了，但人生的旅途還在綿延，懷著這一個月學到的寶貴經驗，
相信我可以更加努力，努力去學習、努力去為未來奮鬥、努力做個對社會有貢獻
的人。成長永遠不會停止，年輕時的旅行是一生的養分，謝謝種種的機緣讓我有
這次的機會！

There is an old saying that goes,“Traveling thousands of miles is
better than reading thousands of books.”It means that real experiences
is more important than what’s in books. I always felt that I had improved
myself after I traveled every time. So I was very happy when I knew I got
the chance of this scholarship. This was not my first time to go abroad,
neither my first time to go to the USA. I went to America to perform and
travel, but this time was to learn. People who had studied in America all
say that the way of teaching is very different. Why the USA can be so
powerful for long time？ How they educate students so outstanding？
Let me find it out in this journey！
The airplane ran faster on the runway, the harder I felt by the speed.
It made me feel that I am going to break away from who I am now and
approach the future. So I felt very excited and nervous. But it didn’t last
long. My hometown outside the window seemed getting smaller. I felt
melancholy.
Fly is not strange to me, because I had gone abroad several times. I
appreciated my parents and ISU for giving me these chances. But my
companions seemed to fly first time. They looked very excited and afraid.
I believed that it will be a very wonderful journey with them！
The way to Saint Louis was very arduous. It took us about 16 hours
to get there, and we almost couldn’t catch up with our connecting flight.
The learning center in ISU was very useful, because the questions which
customs officers asked us were totally the same as the books. It made us
feel at ease, and we passed the customs very favorably. Because the
schedule arranged by school, we had to stay in Saint Louis for two days.
We used these two days to get rid of jet lag and explore America cultures.
For the reason that the season we came to America was summer and
Saint Louis is continental climate, it was very hot. The weather was so
hot and dry that I felt scorching heat when I breathed. No wonder soda
sells very well in America. （If you observe the local people, you will find
that they looks like they will die without air conditioning and beverages）
The prices of commodities are very high in America. You see the prices
show one or two dollars and you think they are very cheap. You may
think if you don’t buy them you will feel very sorry. But if you transform
them to NT dollars, they are still not small numbers. It is the reason that
America is developed country, and the high basic of economy make high
basic of prices. But you can buy something cheaper in the USA for they
will be charged to import to another country. The flavors of foods in
America are very heavy. And the calories they have must scare you！I
had lived in China for two years, and I think the flavors were very heavy.
I didn’t expect they are heavier than china！ For example, we think it’s
sauce, but American all directly drink it as if it is soup. I didn’t want to get
used to these flavors, or I will feel tasteless after I go back to Taiwan. The
USA don’t have kitchen waste can and people also don’t have the habit of
recycling. All the things they don’t want only have one fortune－throwing
to garbage can. So I think that American is very wasteful.
After two days, our teacher from Southern Illinois University picked
us to Carbondale. We never thought that teacher was so young. She
looks like only a little elder than us, and she also holds a post in CESL
（Center for English as a Second Language）. The way to school was
getting more desolate. Only you could see are farmlands. Though I had
heard that our school was far from downtown, I had never thought that
so remote. （It is very inconvenient if you don’t have a car in America.
The land is so wide！ As a result, America culture is very different from
Taiwan culture ） After I saw the place we will live, I only had one
impression. What a cold, bare room it is！ There had no tables, chairs,
daylight lamps and any furniture, except beds and a little bulb. I was
filled with confusion. “Is that America culture or just the place we will live
is too poor？” Fortunately, our teachers offered us some necessary
furniture. Without their help, we even had big problem with our
homework！After solving the problems about dormitory, there’s another
question about drink and food. If you want to buy sustenance in America,
the first place which comes to my mind is Wal-Mart！There is an joke
says that Wal-Mart is the heaven for poor people！ But the reputation is
well supported by fact. You can find anything what you need and very
cheap in there. After we finished buying and went back to our “new
home”, we were going to prepare for our new lives！
The first day of school was a “Assign students to classes base on their
academic level test.” I had heard that we will have a test, but I never
thought that the examination questions were from TOEFL！ I had never
took a test like this！ It made me lose my bearings！ I had no choice but
do my best. Eventually, the result was out！ I was in the class of level 4.
（After you finish studying level 6, you can study in the university. After
level 7 you can study in institute.） The first day of class, I was very
excited and disturbed. Fortunately, one member of our group was in the
same class. This made me feel relieved because we could help each other！
The first class was core. We two all felt nervous. Classmates were all from
different country, and they all said another language which we couldn’t
understand. We found seats near windows with embarrassment and
waited for teacher. Eight O’ clock, the teacher came to class on time. In
the beginning, teacher asked us to introduce ourselves. Our classmates
almost came from Saudi Arabia, except one was from Colombia. （All of
them spoke very fast, and they all had strange accent.） Then the teacher
told us the rules in this school. It contains that you shouldn’t be late, you
mustn’t cheat, how to compute your grades, and you must obey the rules
which teacher made. But there was a special paper caught my eyes. It
was filled with regulations about plagiarize. It said that we mustn’t cheat,
or we will be punished seriously. And we had to sign our name in the end.
（Western countries take intellectual property seriously. If you
infringed upon other people’s intellectual property, you will be in big
troubles. But in China, people usually ignore it. I think it is a very severe
issue！）Based on this, we couldn’t copy textbooks. （Because we thought
that we just came here for four weeks, it was not worthy to buy whole
books.）We had no choice but bought all of books we needed. Books in the
USA are very expensive！ The same English textbooks in Taiwan cost
about 300 NT dollars. But in America, they sell 65 dollars！ How
expensive they are！ They committed my wallet homicide！
The way teachers in America teach is different from Taiwan. In the
beginning, I only confused that why teacher spent whole class just for
some vocabulary. Why teacher spent so much time doing something
seemed meaningless？ But later I found that it is the real and helpful
way to learn. It makes you know what the meaning of this word is and
how to use this word. Why my classmates can speak frequently without
thinking carefully but we all think a lot before we speak？ Chinese
Education request us to remember lots of things, but we may not know
the meaning clearly. America education let you understand what and why
you learn. We never experience this way of education. Maybe we will
think that this way is very strange and waste time. But you must be
fascinated by it after you get benefits from it！
Happy time tend to pass really fast. Four weeks had gone
unconsciously. We were going to leave this enthralling place. We left
Carbondale with gratitude and reluctance. After we fatigued by a long
journey, we finally got on the plane which flew to Taiwan. I thought that
I had learned how to speak, how to face to different culture and how to
be independent. I appreciate that my parents supported me to get this
scholarship. Thank ISU for giving me the chance. Thank teachers who
taught me. And thank all the people who helped me！
The plane had arrived. It’s the warm and fragrant hometown that we
missed. Though this passing trip had ended, the journey of life is still
going. I believe that I can do my best to learn, fight for my future and do
something for the community. Growth never stops！ Wandering while
one was young becomes nutrients throughout one's life. Thanks
everyone let me have this chance to learn！
