School of Humanities Discipline Course Title Irish Studies BA Omnibus Module Coordinators Module Title Dr Nessa Cronin, Dr Louis de Paor & Ms Méabh Ní Fhuartháin Lecture times Teaching Format Brief outline of content Imagining modern Ireland: An introduction to Irish culture studies IR120 11.00-1.00pm Wednesday, Semesters 1 & 2 12 x 2 hour lecture This course provides an integrated interdisciplinary introduction to the ways in which Irish writers, and musicians, have participated in the formation of Irish identities from the cultural revival of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to the present. It considers the extent to which writers, in Irish and in English, and those involved in the revival of Irish music and dance have been actively involved in imagining and re-imagining Ireland and Irishness during the modern period. Learning Outcomes On completion of the course, students will have a critical knowledge and understanding of the ways in which literature and music have contributed to the construction and interrogation of modern Irish identities. The course is specifically designed to meet the learning needs of visiting students and is available only to visiting Erasmus and JYA students. Assessment Types and Deadlines Required Text Two hour exam. All core readings are included in the course handbook. Supplementary readings will be recommended in class.
