HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT TITLE I, PART A PARENT INVOLVEMENT Mabel B. Wesley Elementary School Parental Involvement Policy If students are to be successful, their parents or guardians must be actively involved in their education. Wesley Elementary School has developed this policy to describe how we involve parents in the development of policy and the School-Parent Compact, to help parents help their children achieve, and to make sure parents with limited english proficiency or disabilities can participate in their children's education. This policy was developed with the assistance and approval of the parents of children participating in the Title I program, as well as the following: *Principal *Instructional Coordinator *PTA President *PAC Representative *Special Education Representative, and *Title I Coordinator *Site-Based Decision-Making Committee Representative Policy Involvement: Each year, we invite the parents of all children who participate in the Title I program to an Annual Title I Parent meeting or, one or more other meetings. At the meetings, we discuss Title I law, its requirements, and the rights and benefits to parents of children involved. District staff are invited to help with the presentations. We explain how parents can be involved in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs, including contributing to this parental involvement policy. Program Involvement: At these meetings, we give parents timely information about our Title I programs, including reading and writing programs, tutoring, math, technology, and ESL services. We describe our curriculum, explain our expectations for our students, and how we measure student performance. We explain how each individual child and our school as a whole, are doing on state tests, such as the STAAR and other measures of performance such as Stanford 10 and the Naglieri. Parent Advisory Committee meetings are held to respond to parent suggestions. Parents make suggestions and share experiences with other parents and participate in decision making. The school submits parents' comments to the district and revises the plan as advised by the Houston Independent School District, Parent Advisory Committee or Shared Decision-Making Committee. HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT TITLE I, PART A PARENT INVOLVEMENT HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT TITLE I, PART A PARENT INVOLVEMENT Mabel B. Wesley Elementary School Parental Involvement Policy (continued) School-Parent Compact: A district model for the school-parent compact was developed jointly with parents of participating Title I students. It explains how parents, school staff, and the students will all share responsibility for each student's academic success. Our school-parent compact was based on the district model and last updated September 9, 2013. Building Capacity for Involvement: It is part of Wesley’s role to assist parents as their children learn. One way this is done is by explaining education laws. Parents are given information about district, state and national education goals, Title I requirements, STAAR, the school improvement plan, and ESL education and PAC meetings. Parent Training and Involvement: Presentations are designed to help parents know if a child is doing well, how parents can work with educators to help their children, and how to be involved in decision-making about the education of their children. Materials and training are provided to help parents assist their children, such as including weekly computer classes Spring of 2014, family literacy activities, and field trips. Professional Development Trainings are provided to teachers and other staff members. School staff members are also taught the importance of involving parents as partners, and building ties between home and school. Our school strives to coordinate parental involvement activities among the different programs available on our campus. Shared parental involvement activities are sponsored for Title I and Magnet. Accessibility: Participation and involvement of all parents is important. Information related to student achievement, school performance, school and parent programs, meetings, and other opportunities for participation is sent home in the home language whenever possible. Some of the standard information sent home in Spanish including this policy. Interpreters are provided for parent conferences. We ensure that parents with disabilities have the opportunity to participate by providing handicapped access to the elevated portion of our building, which includes the entrance and portable building areas.
