Opportunity Analysis: (successes, new curriculum development, alternative delivery mechanisms, interdisciplinary strategies, etc.)
The four developmental English Composition classes have been merged into a two-semester sequence beginning this fall. The four
developmental Reading classes have been merged into a two-semester sequence beginning this fall. Last fall, the department
initiated the ENG 10 accelerated course which compresses the sequence into one semester. The department is applying principles
of acceleration to the developmental courses to better serve the students. Data will be collected to see how effective this
acceleration of the programs will be. The drop in numbers (attached) from Spring 2011 to Fall 2011 is directly linked to the
reduction in class section offerings campus-wide.
Summary of Program “Health” Evaluation: (including consideration of size, scope, productivity, and quality of outcomes)
Given the campus-wide reduction in class section offerings, the developmental sequences in English Composition and Reading are
healthy. The development and ongoing assessment of student learning outcomes is providing the bases for conversation and
collaboration among faculty aimed at improving student learning. Looking at the three year data (attached), the success rates in the
developmental composition classes is increasing while the student demand for reading classes is declining.
