Amen Principal’s Message Despite the cold temperatures, and other weather challenges, our St. Edmund school community is filled with an abundance of school spirit, enthusiasm and activity. Our grades 5 to 8 students shared a dynamic display of their inquiry work in the areas of history and social studies with their Museum Walk. Thank you to the many parents who were able to come and take a look at our presentations and displays. Mr. Pividor has kept our sports teams vibrant by coaching our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, as well as our hockey team. Our boys’ basketball team advanced to represent St. Edmund at the Mississauga East finals. Way to Go Wildcats! Our St. Edmund vs. St. Francis of Assisi Spirit Game will take place on March 6 at Port Credit Arena at noon. Please consider coming out to help cheer on our team. Thank you to our School Council who, through the leadership of Mrs. Landman, organized a Mississauga Steelheads outing for our school community. The event proved exciting as we not only cheered on the Steelheads, but also helped support Breast Cancer Research and Awareness. Thank you to our grade eights who, under the leadership of Mr. Ellsworth, provided us with an inspiring assembly and video on the virtue of Self Control. This Friday, February 28, our grade 6 students will be leading our Respect Virtues Assembly at 9:30 a.m. Please join us if you can. It is so wonderful to see how many students are proudly wearing their spirit/virtue tags. As you know, thanks to our Youth Faith Ambassadors, we recently celebrated our St. Edmund Spirit Week. One of the highlights of the week was our Valentine’s – Party Rocker Dance and Fundraiser organized by Mrs. Worobec, along with other volunteers from our School Council. Thank you so very much to all families who were able to support our fundraising efforts. Our Catholic School Council so generously sponsors us for so many wonderful initiatives throughout the entire year and, with your support, has recently provided our students with a new, portable electronic scoreboard, and Spirit Banners to be displayed at sporting as well as other competitive events. Thank you to all parents for your partnership in making your child’s educational experience a excellent one. A Maltby Page 2 St. Edmund Elementary School A Different Approach to Fasting Fasting has a tendency to be oriented toward things like giving up food or television but there are many other creative ways that we can welcome Jesus’ healing touch in our everyday lives. Here are some suggestions that you may wish to consider… 1. Fast from anger and hatred. Give your family an extra dose of love each day. 2. Fast from judging other. Before making judgments, recall how Jesus overlooks our faults. 3. Fast from discouragement. Hold on to Jesus’ promise that He has a perfect plan for your life. 4. Fast from complaining. When you find yourself about to complain, close your eyes and recall some of the little moments of joy that Jesus has given you. 5. Fast from resentment or bitterness. Work on forgiving those who may have hurt you. 6. Fast from spending too much money. Try to reduce your spending by 10% and give those savings to the poor. Catholic School Council Please join us for our next Catholic School Council sponsored event—Movie Night featuring Frozen. Movie Night is taking place on Friday, March 28 in our gymnasium. As well, please join us at our next CSC meeting taking place on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:45 p.m. As a staff, we would like to thank our school council who, with your support, has gifted our classrooms, teams and clubs with numerous resources such as an electronic scoreboard, Spirit Banners, funds for our Eco Kids, our Lego Robotics Clubs, our Forest of Reading Program, and sports team needs. For the fall of 2014 we are exploring the possibility of increasing the number of Smart Boards we have in our school. We are so grateful for this partnership which enables us to enhance what we do for our students. Black History Month February is “Black History Month”. This is a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians, who throughout history have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation we know today. It is also an opportunity for the majority of Canadians to learn about the experiences of Black Canadians in our society and the vital role this community has played throughout our shared history. Is your child a good Pedestrian? Our community is unique in that there are many streets with no sidewalks. It is important that students are taught how to walk to school safely. Continue to remind your child to look both ways before he/she crosses the street. One should never walk or ride bicycles with earphones in their ears as this makes them less aware of their surroundings as they cannot hear oncoming traffic or other hazards. When walking on streets without sidewalks, children should walk in single file close to the edge of the road FACING the traffic. This way they can see St. Edmund Elementary School Page 3 Important Dates: March – Nutrition Month March 3 Officer Wayne Moore @ St. Edmund March 4 Shrove Tuesday – Pancake Day sponsored by our CSC March 31 Lenten Mass @ 9:30 a.m. April 1 Silver Creek – Grade 4 April 2 Catholic School Council meeting @ 6:45 p.m. April 3 Chess Tournament May 8 Welcome to Kindergarten Officer Wayne Moore @ St. Edmund March 5 Ash Wednesday Liturgy @ 9:00 a.m. (all are welcome) March 6 Spirit Game – noon May 26 to June 6 EQAO March 7 PA Day – No School for Students March 10-14 March Break March 17 St. Patrick’s Day Lunch and Milk Days—Please mark your calendar Start End Milk January 6 March 28 Pizza January 8 March 26 Lunch Lady February 1 Subway February 20 March 6 March 20 April 3 Every other week Gr. 7/Gr. 8 Hep B HPV School Hours The Big Crunch March 18 Skills Canada Grades 1-8 Microsoft – Gr. 5 March 19 Microsoft – Gr. 6 March 20 Microsoft – Gr. 7 Defibrillator Training @ St. Edmund March 21 Microsoft – Gr. 8 March 27 Graduation Photos March 28 St. Edmund Movie Night – Frozen 8:45 – 11:45 11:45 – 12:45 Lunch Hour 1:45 – 3:15 Please make every effort to send your children to school on time. St. Edmund Elementary School Page 5 Reminders EQAO Update This year the EQAO assessments for students in grades 3 and 6 will take place between May 26 and June 6. We ask that you please avoid booking dental, doctor appointments or vacations during this time. Extended Absences from School If your family is making plans to travel which will involve an extended absence from school, please send a letter to Mrs. Maltby in advance of the trip. While family time and travel are very worthwhile, it is not encouraged other than at times when students have a scheduled holiday. There will be valuable learning that is missed during an extended absence and work missed is often work which the student needs to be present for in order to complete. In the event that your family does make plans for travel, please discuss your plans with your child’s teacher. Indoor Shoes It is important that students come prepared with “indoor shoes” as well as boots for cold and/or wet weather. This is also a safety request. In the event of a fire alarm, all occupants must vacate the building regardless of the weather. There will be no time to put on boots or outdoor shoes. Bedroom slippers are not appropriate for school as they do not provide proper support or may not be slip resistant. Please label all shoes and boots with your child’s name. Immunization Records Peel Public Health periodically reviews the immunization records of each school in its jurisdiction. If your child’s records are not up to date or on file with Peel Health, Peel Health will issue a letter to parents notifying them that immunization is incomplete. Students cannot be readmitted to class until Peel Health receives the proper documentation. If you haven’t done so recently, please take some time to review your child’s immunization records and send any new immunization information DIRECTLY to Peel Health. Newsletters by Email If you don’t already receive your newsletter and notices by email and would like to, please give the office your email address and you will be added to the list. The office makes use of the parent emailing list on an ongoing basis in order to send out courtesy reminders and updates. Please help us place your family on this list by providing us with an email address. To date we have just over 80% of our families on our email distribution list. Page 6 St. Edmund Elementary School Healthy Eating / Healthy Living This year, in partnership with our Catholic School Council, St. Edmund is focusing on the theme of Healthy Eating/Healthy Living. Healthy eating is important to good health. Food nourishes your body and gives you energy to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Eating the right foods can also help reduce your risk of many chronic diseases. On the Health Canada website, at www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/part/ tb-bo/index-eng.php, you will find a Healthy Eating Toolbox filled with a wide variety of resources, tools, and tips on promoting healthy eating. Included there is a guide for children, youth and adults to track their food intake to make sure they’re meeting the recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide. The My Food Guide Servings Tracker can be found at: www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/track-suivi/index-eng.php Information can also be found at www.HealthyCanadians.gc.ca/EatWell. For example, the section on food labels (www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/eating-nutrition/ label-etiquetage/index-eng.php) includes interactive quizzes and tools with information about how to use nutrition information to make more informed choices. Another good site for nutrition information is the “Healthy Life” channel on the Canadian Living website, produced in collaboration with Health Canada. (www.canadianliving.com/health/__healthy_life/). The site provides tasty recipes, informative articles and videos, top nutrition advice and a fun, skill-testing quiz. Through a Parents Reaching Out Grant, on Friday, May 9, our Catholic School Council will be sponsoring a Zumba Night for parents and students. Please ‘save the date’ for this exciting, energy-filled event! More details will follow as we get closer to the date. Defibrillator Training On Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 3:30 – 6:30 staff and community members have the opportunity to be trained on the use of a defibrillator. A defibrillator will then be placed in our school. Training involves a 3 hour session with a light dinner provided. If you are interested in the training, please call Mrs. Maltby at 905 277 8962. Kindergarten Parent Information Bulletins Minimizing Disruptions to Classes We appreciate continued parental help and support in minimizing disruptions to classes, whenever possible. By trying our best not to disturb classes, except in very important situations, we are reducing disruptions to quality teaching and learning time. To this end, we ask the following: If you wish to discuss something with your child’s teacher, we ask that you set up an appointment with the teacher. Approaching the teacher, before, during and/or after school makes it difficult for the teacher to focus on her/his students. T his also becomes a safety issue. Please leave a message with the office and the teacher will call you back. If your child is late please have him/her report to the office. PLEASE DO NOT ESCORT YOUR CHILD TO CLASS. Send a note in advance, to your child’s teacher when your child needs to be picked up early, then meet them in the office and sign them out. If delivering lunches to your child at school, write your child’s and their teacher’s names on lunch bags and leave them on the table in the front foyer. Thank you for your assistance in helping ensure our daily routines run smoothly. St. Edmund Elementary School Page 9 Virtue of February: Respect A respectful person Treats himself/herself and everyone else with equal consideration and courtesy Uses a positive tone of voice and body language Avoids swearing, name calling, put-downs, and inappropriate gestures Says “excuse me”, “Please,” and “Pardon me” Avoids gossip God has given us the virtues of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God—and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ. As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness which are different ways of saying respect. That respect should come first and foremost from ourselves. We have to respect ourselves and then we will be able to respect others. We should also be able to expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet—our brothers and sisters in Jesus. “Do unto others as they would do unto you.” is known as the Golden Rule. The concept of respect is rooted in this adage and is universal. St. Francis of Assisi once said “preach the Gospel and when necessary use words.” He meant that by speaking, acting and serving one another as disciples of Jesus we more powerfully demonstrate our beliefs and share the Good News with our bothers and sisters. Virtue of March: Kindness In the month of March we will celebrate the virtue of Kindness. God wants us to treat all people with kindness. A kind person… Says nice things about others so they feel good about themselves; Sticks up for people who are picked on or need help; Refuses to join others who are insulting, intimidating, mean or hurtful; Watches and looks for ways to help those in need. The Top Ten Ways to Keep Your Friends 1. Show them kindness and respect. 2. Stick up for them. 3. Be supportive when your friends need help and advice. 4. Tell the truth but be kind about it. 5. If you hurt a friend, say you’re sorry. 6. If you make a promise, keep it. 7. Put some effort into your friendships; otherwise your friends might feel neglected. 8. Don’t try to change your friends; accept them the way they are. 9. If a friend hurts you and apologizes, accept the apology. 10. Treat your friends the way you want them to treat you.
