Ferreira St. Martin of Tours 1290 McBride Lane Fr. Joyson Pottackal Superintendent Trustee Parish (905) 279-5742 Pastor JUNE 2011 WHAT MAKES A DAD God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it……Dad Author Unknown Dear God You have done such a marvelous job of creating us and the world around us. You have placed this creation, including all the people we meet, in our care. We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to be fair. Everyday we are tempted to show that we are a little bit superior to those around us. Grant us the strength to resist that temptation. Keep our minds and our hearts focused on your great plan for all people instead of our own small plans for ourselves. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our brother, who lived to show us your way. Amen A Fair Person… Listens to all sides before forming opinions Shows good sportsmanship at all times Knows that the same rules apply to everyone Refuses to twist rules to avoid consequences Works to bring about peaceful solutions to problems Cheers on the successes of others Can balance their own rights and responsibilities with those of others PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Principal’s Message As this school year draws to a close, please know that I am grateful that God has allowed me the privilege of working with a highly dedicated group of people; amazing students, staff, volunteers, and parents! Thank you to Fr. Joyson, Fr. Philip and the Parish team at St. Martin of Tours Parish for their spiritual leadership through school Masses, Liturgies, visits and Sacramental preparation. A very special thank you to our trustee Peter Ferreira, for the on-going support of our school community. Special thanks to our Mississauga South Superintendent C. Saytar, for her support and encouragement throughout the year. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you the parents and guardians of these amazing children! Your work in raising your children in a Catholic community is truly commendable. My final heartfelt appreciation is to the students of St. David of Wales School. You are a remarkable group of young people and to our Graduates I will pray that God will keep you safe and happy always!!! I will continue to hold all of you in my heart!!! On behalf of the entire St. David of Wales staff, I sincerely wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable summer with family and friends. B. Gillis CONGRATULATIONS TO STUDENTS! St. David of Wales students are to be commended for their excellent efforts at co-operating with instruction and regular reminders about safety and appropriate play, both in the school and on the playground. The expert guidance of staff and the support of parents combined with the students’ desire to co-operate and do well, helps keep behavior problems at a minimum. We emphasize celebrating successes and learning from our mistakes. This results in our school being a safer, happier place where students feel valued and respected. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Congratulations to our Grade Eight students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Monday, May 9, 2011. Thank you to parents/guardians for supporting your child in their Sacramental preparation. THANK YOU AND APPLAUSE TO: Parents for reminding their children to be respectful towards others and to play safely. Parents who continue to practice safe driveway and parking routines. Parents who are encouraging their children to let an adult know if someone is bothering them. Parents who got their Criminal Reference Check so they can supervise class trips. SCHOOL DAY BEGINS Just a reminder to everyone that the school day begins at 8:45 a.m. with the bell. Any student coming into the school after 8:45 a.m. that has not arrived on a school bus is considered late and will be marked as late on the daily attendance. Punctuality is very important. Each time a student is late, that student disrupts the whole class when entering and has quite possibly missed important instructions or announcements. Punctuality is a life skill which students need in order to be successful in the future. HERE COMES THE SUN With the arrival of warmer weather we are aware of the concerns regarding the ultra violet rays. There are a number of scheduled outdoor activities and field trips during the months June. We encourage you to dress your children for the events and weather. For example, hats, t-shirts with sleeves, etc. You may also wish to consider the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. We cannot accept the responsibility for applying sun screen at school. We at St. David of Wales will be teaching our students about the dangers associated with our exposure to the sun. Recommendations from Peel Health to reduce the effects of radiation include: Wear protective clothing to cover the skin Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and skin on the head, particularly if there is a little hair (students are reminded to remove hats before they enter the school building). Wear sunscreen, (it is available in a variety of protection factors – the high the factor number the greater the protection). Stay out of direct sunlight i.e., remain in shaded areas, particularly during midday, when the sun’s rays are most direct. Know your skin type for example, fair-skinned people are more sensitive to ultra-violet radiation. Parents, please reinforce these recommendations with your children. DRESS CODE With the approach of the warmer weather, we ask you to review our dress code with your children. At all times, clothing should be comfortable, tasteful and appropriate to our Catholic school environment. Clothing must display appropriate and acceptable words and graphics. Girls tops must have a minimum of 5 cm. (approximately the width of 3 adult fingers) at the shoulders. Boys tops mush have sleeves. Shorts and skirts must reach the bottom of the student’s fingertips when hands are relaxed to their side. Specifically not allowed are: Bandanas, string tops, tube tops, halter tops, or anything that exposes bare skin, midriffs and/or undergarments, skin tight clothing, spandex shorts and pants, sheer materials (including mesh), cut-offs, torn or ragged clothing and pants which sag below the waist. Thank you for your co-operation in helping to instill the values of common sense, good taste and modesty in our students.
