THE NEW TRANSLATION – HE DESCENDED INTO HELL In the Apostles’ Creed, where we previously said, “He descended to the dead,” we will now use the more accurate translation “He descended into hell.” Based on the apostolic preaching, especially St. Paul, the first meaning of this expression is that Jesus truly experienced human death. His soul, separated from His body but united to His divinity, joined those who had gone before into the depths (e.g., Ephesians 4:9‐10). So, why talk about hell? Well, Scripture calls the abode of the dead "hell" – Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek – because the souls there are deprived of the vision of God. Such was the case for all the dead who came before Christ, which does not mean that the lot of the evildoers is identical to that of the righteous, as our Lord shows through the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received into “Abraham's bosom” (Luke 16:22‐26). Jesus descended into “hell” not to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before Him and could not go to heaven until the Saviour’s death and resurrection. Jesus went to rescue the holy souls from the beginning of human history who were awaiting their Redeemer in Abraham's bosom. This is the meaning of St. Peter’s statement that "the gospel was preached even to the dead" – the Savior descended to proclaim liberty to the captive spirits who were imprisoned in hell (1 Peter 3:18‐19 and 4:6). The descent into hell is the last phase of Jesus’ messianic mission, condensed in time but vast in its significance: the spread of Christ's redemptive work to men of all times and all places. Some Fathers of the Church speculate that the devil mistook Jesus for easy prey, because the evil one saw only Christ’s human soul laden with the sins of the world, but did not see the second person of the Most Blessed Trinity. In this way, God breached the gates of hell and destroyed Satan’s hold over mankind. Through His death for us, our Lord conquered sin, death, and the devil "who has the power of death" (Hebrews 2:14). In sum, the dead Christ’s human soul united to His divine person went down to the realm of the dead. He opened heaven's gates for the just who had gone before him, and vanquished the enemy of our human nature. Thus, this brief matter‐of‐fact statement holds the promise of immense hope for believers. We’ll discuss this, and much more in Part 2 of our parish presentation on the New Missal, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. next Sunday, October 30. Please feel free to attend even if you missed the first session! 108 SOLEMN HIGH MASS ON THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING October 30, 2011 – 2:30 pm - St. Patrick’s National Shrine Church, 141 McCaul St. Toronto A Solemn High Mass according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite will be celebrated by Rev.
